If you wish to experience the Great Wall at its best then Jinshanling is your best option. It has areas of reconstructed wall but also original parts. The views sweep into the distance truly magnificent. It made our trip to China worthwhile on its own.

Avoid Badaling (the most popular section of the wall among tourists) and go to Jinshanling instead if you want to see the Great Wall in its original, unspoiled state, and away from all the noisy tourist groups. This wall is further out of Beijing and takes a couple hours by bus/taxi. I ultimately spent 5hrs hiking along the Jinshanling Great... More

We went on a private tour with Leo from Beijing Walking Tours (1500RMB excl. entrance fees). We left at about 11am from Beijing by private car with Leo (we went by ourselves to the Summer Palace, read my other review). Driving time on the way there was 2 hours and the return journey about 2.5hrs. Leo is a great guide,... More

This section of the Great Wall took my breath away! This is an unspoiled section where you can walk for miles and not meet another person. I almost don't want to write about it and keep it to myself! We saw two other people on the wall during the entirety of our snowy November visit. Parts of this section are... More

Absolutely amazing experience - made all the better by the absence of other people, as it was cold out and had snowed the day before. During the four hours we spent on the wall we only encountered a few maintenance staff. The light dusting of snow, which made some parts a little difficult to climb, provided some beautiful pictures. As... More

It's 2 1/4 hrs from BJ without traffic, but it's worth the (quite nice) drive. You can walk from A to B, which is spectacular. The surrounding is nice. There are few visitors. You must be good on foot as some areas are steep. Bring decent walking shoes - tennis shoes will be fine. Local farmer ladies will accompany you... More

No words can accurately describe the beauty . We took the long bus trip from Beijing (2.5-3 hrs each way) and it was worth every second.. it was near empty. Our photos are incredible. It is a difficult hike at times, but worth the effort. Absolutely a MUST DO.

Jinshanling is a section of the Great Wall of China located in 125 km northeast of Beijing. Jinshanling section of the wall was built from 1570 during the Ming Dynasty. This section is 10.5 km long, with 5 passes, 67 towers and 3 beacon towers. In my opinion, this is the most beautiful part of the Great Wall of China.... More

The Great Wall from Jinshanling to Simatai West was the high point of our weeklong trip in China (pun intended). We chose this day hike on the Great Wall because it was more remote than other sections and offered hiking on both restored and unrestored sections of the wall. The 120km distance from Beijing made for a lengthy auto journey... More
