Took a drive out to Cañada de La Virgen Pyramid, near San Miguel de Allende, arrived about 12:30 on a Sunday. Waiting around to buy a ticket, then we were told no tickets available. Could not find a site on line to reserve a ticket other than commercial trips with transportation and guides. At site it looks like you can buy tickets, we could not, and then you wait for the bus, it looked very crowded and not Covid-19 compliant, small bus, maybe 2 dozen people for 20 minute ride to site.

My wife and I took a guided trip to this ancient pyramid a few miles outside San Miguel de Allende. We signed up with Coyote Canyon Adventures and their guide Lino Landeros gave us a very informative tour of the site that was amazing. Lino's knowledge of the was unbelievable, and we learned alot that day, about the history of the people who built these amazing structures and the construction itself. Location and orientation of the main pyramid with the temple is based on astrologial facts, and was was used as an astrological calendar. Where the sun set of rise will tell what day it is. The site also bear signs of other religious ceremonies and activities.
Lino Landres' knowledge about the site was enormous, and we enjoyed everything he could tell about facts and assumptions of the site, its purpose, use, the ancient people from the high priests to the servants, what they did, where they lived, etc.
We will highly recommend this tour with Lino as your guide. Dress properly, hiking boots for a 3 to 4 miles of walking, protection from the sun recommended, and bring camera! Overall time necessary about 5 hours including transport from/to San Miguel, and lunch provided. Yngve H.

For Mexico a small archeological site with a single pyramid but interesting to see. It’s not that easy to access, as you have to get one of the regular buses from the visitor centre and then do a fairly long walk to get to the actual site. It was very hot when we were there and as there is no shade, you will need plenty of water, a hat and sunscreen although you will have to leave all bags at the visitor centre. We had an excellent private guide (Lino, from Coyote Adventures, who was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic), which was very worthwhile as otherwise you will be part of a large group from the visitor centre.

The staff is terrible. Terrible. The website advertises tours beginning at 11:00 a.m. We arrived at 10:30 a.m. and were told that no, no tours would start until noon. We would have to wait an hour and a half and then the tour would only be offered in Spanish. When I asked about the error on the website the employee shrugged. Unfortunately our taxi had already driven away and we asked the employee to call a taxi. She shrugged again and said no. I asked if there was a bus that went down the main road, I could see the bus from a high vantage point. The employee said no. I asked if the food was available that was advertised. No. And a shrug. Absolutely maddening. Finally another group arrived and we were able to get a ride back into town. I understand that with a real guide from town, Albert someone, that it is fascinating. It is quite costly though. Do not under any circumstances take a taxi out there. Do a tour or don't do it.

Dr Coffee was an excellent, professional guide, fully versed in Mexican history and was ‘Covid conscious’. He shared details about surrounding flora and fauna as well as the ancient pyramid site - kept us fully engaged the whole time. Respectful of local culture and the environment. A remarkable heritage site in a stunning setting. Highly recommend.

This was about 30 minutes outside of San Miguel de Allende. Easy drive, Easy parking. HIghly suggest the guided tour to learn more about the ruins. The Walk from where the bus drops you is a long, hilly one so those with limited mobility take note. Very interesting. It was something our adult children really enjoyed. The views are gorgeous and the lighting stunning! Great day trip!

Archaeological area near the center of San Miguel de Allende, they offer a very well organized tour, you can access the pyramids only driven by authorized personnel, they take you by bus from the reception to access the archaeological area, there is a cost per person, The staff is well prepared to provide information and are very friendly. The view along the way is very beautiful and natural. You have to walk about 1 km from where the bus leaves you to the access, there are slopes.

Not far from town, you’ll find the massive nature preserve of Cañada de La Virgen. You can take a tour from La Biblioteca but we drove there which was very convenient. Once there you must take a shuttle bus out to the pyramids and you must stay with the guide. Unfortunately the explanation of the pyramids was done only in Spanish but our friend who speaks great spanish was able to interpret what the guide was saying. The highlight of the visit to this archaeological site was being able to explore the many pyramids. If you have time venture out to see the pryamids.

Do yourself a favor and visit!
it's a truly special experience to tour this amazing archaeological site and learn about the history of the pre-Aztec culture.
We toured with Albert Coffee, who was part of the original excavation team and is a wealth of knowledge.
Homemade tacos were available for 30 pesos each after the tour (cash only). The corn used for the tortillas was grown on site.
If you visit soon, there is a kitten that lives at the historical center. She can use some toys to focus her energy on:) She also loves people and you can give her a cuddle.

Well worth seeing with a great guide (we went with Albert Coffee). For some people with altitude or lung issues (like my father in law) it can be disappointing as they will not be able to access the pyramid site and/or climb the pyramids. Temperature during the day in December was good it might be too hot in the summer as there is a decent walk in the exposed high altitude.

I want to know if I can drink the water there coming from the US
Written 18 June 2019
Bottled water or purified water is fine for travellers. Always bring something to drink along with you. There is nothing available near the Pyramid, it is a high desert landscape.

Can we just show up and pay our own entry fee? We are fluent in Spanish, so we do not necessarily require an English guide. We’d prefer to explore on our own. We will be staying in SMA & are considering taking a taxi out to the site. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Yes I think you can do this on your own but as the above answer suggests there are issues about getting on site once you are at the park. Phoning the park office in advance would be worthwhile. There also seem to be some political issues between the owners of the surrounding land and the park. When we were there last March there was an ongoing park staff issue where there was a possibility they were all about to quit. Check everything out when you get there. Best of luck. It’s worth it.

We are trying to get to San Miguel de Allende from the Moroleón area. Does anyone know what the safest and easiest way to do so would be? We asked one his company, but the into route there arrives around 9pm. We’d prefer a daytime route.

Written 8 October 2017
There is a safe parking lot at the Tourist Information for your private car
a bus from the park will bring you near the Pyramid
from there a walk from one hour (all together) will continue

My husband and I would like to do this tour with Albert Coffee during the week of Feb 20-26. When I tried to book, it said that we needed at least 4 people to book...is this correct? Thanks for any information.

I just booked directly through an email to Albert Coffee. He has a website: albert coffee tours with his email contact information.

Una pregunta ¿ donde encuentran a los guias?
Written 13 February 2016
Es un problema con los guías que ya van incluidos en la camioneta que sale de la entrada pero no están capacitados correctamente, y no es una zona que valga la pena conocer, es mas lo que se espera que lo que hay.
