Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were passing by San Carlos, driving from Panama. We rented a nice two bedroom house five minutes from the beach. The water was warm like bath water. The beach was perfect for families with young children. There's a wide variety restaurants in town and a very good grocery store.

Did this as a solo climb around 8:30 am in late March. Based on previous reviews , I brought back pack with water and camera, sturdy hiking shoes and a hiking pole. As others have indicated expect that it will take an hour from the trailhead until you crawl through the pierced rock in the southern peak. I did not see a distinct trail to the saddle between the peaks or the north peak. Lower third is easy but with numerous false trails that peter out. The middle third has a lot of fist-sized loose rocks within the trail which changes to fine sand in the upper third so gloves or poles are strongly recommended if you are an occasional hiker. It will take ten minutes off your descent time and may prevent a slide or turned ankle I spent a half hour near the summit just watching the birds glide on the thermals coming off the rocks. Bring a small garbage bag to take away some of the garbage and make sure to move larger rocks off the main trail for the next hiker. The trail paint markings are much more prominent on the descent

I have hiked to the summit(s) of Tetakawi several times, and I'm awe inspired by the view every time. There are 2 routes, one from the highway side and one from Piedras Pintas beach. Both offer unique views while heading up.
Wear good hiking boots if you have them (tennis shoes will work also, but definitely no sandals). Plan for 3 hours total, as you will want to spend plenty of time at the top. Bring plenty of water and a snack, sunscreen and camera, gloves can be useful too with sharp rock and some scrambling you have to do near the top if ascending the highway side. Start early especially in the hot and humid summer months.
ENJOY!

This is a spectacular but somewhat dangerous climb. This last March I posted a review that talked about the dangers and the fact that a climber had died in a fall the next day after we had climbed. TripAdviser removed the review because of a complaint from someone. Finally, here are the new regulations:

Tetakawi Mountain, Certified Guide Requirement: Over the years, hiking up Tetakawi Mountain has been a rite of passage for San Carlos residents and visitors alike. However, with more hikers comes more trash left on the trail, graffiti on the rocks, rock climbing holes, and other negative occurrences.

Unsafe ascents & descents, and unfit or unprepared climbers, all jeopardize the beauty and enjoyment of this landmark natural wonder. (The real problem)

Consequently, the land owner requires that anyone wishing to hike the Tetas does so with a Certified Guide only. You can obtain a list of Certified Guides from the OCV Tourism office in San Carlos in the Faro Plaza or call 622-226-0202 or 800-849-1495. Failure to use a certified guide will result in fines levied by the police. Similar to other natural landmarks throughout the world, these regulations have been put in place for the safety of the user and to keep the area clean and maintained so that it can be enjoyed by generations to come.

You can hike up the West peak from the Piedras Pintas beach. This hike gives you a mroe unobstructed view of the ocean and La Manga beach.
Hike up the east side from the obvious Kiosk and this gives you a better view of San Carlos, Guaymas, and still amazing ocean views. This is the more popular of the two hikes.
But whatever you do, do NOT miss this amazing vista if you're int he San Carlos area!!

The trail leads you very clearly to the top o Tetakawi. If you take the access from the beach you can enjoy the best view from top and you can cool down in the sea right after. Climbing early in the morning is way better in order to get the best weather!

The climb if Tetakawi is a nice easy climb of around 600 meters and can easily be accomplished in an hour up. Best to do early morning and the views of San Carlos coastline cannot be beaten than from here. Take your camera and plenty of water.

This hike gives way to some beautiful views. We had walked for three hours before embarking on this hike and weren't in proper foot wear. I won't do that again! There is limited bus and taxi service so we ended up walking for hours and then deciding to check this out. It doesn't take long before the trail becomes very steep, with no shade, and little for hand and foot holds. We actually watched 2 people above me fall and slide to somewhere beneath me. Luckily they both appeared to lack serious injury. Both my spouse and I were hit by falling rocks, made loose by climbers ahead! My ankle took a direct hit and a couple weeks later is still healing. We did bring lots of water and wore hats which is a must. We stopped maybe 15 minutes before the summit because of not being properly prepared and wanting to be safe. Shortly after seeing people fall (who were properly prepared), we descended.
We will be back in the area again and look forward to the hike when prepared: lots of water, hat, prearranged transportation to and from hike entrance, sturdy footwear, knowledge that this is a steep difficult hike!
