Be early and book tickets in advance. We weren't allowed to come along. But the service was great. And it just looks amazing. Walked the timber run up to kringsjå power station and down instead. Nice trip. If you are afraid of heights, you should not go. Two suspension bridges.

Travel like they did in the old days. Not many steam trains around anymore, so this is a special treat for everyone. The kids enjoy the sounds and watching the people outside waving. Be sure to meet up at least 30 minutes before departure. They will resell tickets that aren’t picked up by this time.

Traveling on Setesdalsbanen, (Setesdal Railway) is like taking a giant leap back in time. The original service was discontinued in 1962, but railway enthusiasts managed to save the first few miles of track, a handful of locomotives, coaches and freight cars.
In summer you can experience Norwegian railway travel as it was in the early 1900's. You get your tickets from a vintage ticket machine and staff are dressed in uniforms of the time.
The line is 8 kilometers long and takes about thirty minutes. On the way there's fantastic scenery, as you follow the Otra river. The train returns to the departure station after a short stay at the top.
This is great for kids of all ages!

This is a rather pleasant, gentle way to while away an hour or two. You turn up at the station, buy your tickets, get on the train. It tootles up the line for 30 mins, then there's a lunch stop where you can get hot dogs and waffles. The engine goes to the other end of the train (which is nice to watch), then the train tootles back to the original station. No need to book in advance; however, it's very popular, so you may want to get there early to avoid stress. It's not wildly exciting, but the old carriages are nice, it's cool seeing the train, and the scenery is quite pretty.

Note: our sat nav took us to the train yard, not the train station where you get the train. You need to be at the train station at Grovane, a red building with yellow trim (marked on google maps).

Did this excursion with the cruise ship Marella Explorer at a cost of £54 per adult. The coach journey in the rain to pick up the train at Royknes station took around 30 minutes during which time we were told "NO STEAM TODAY" due to mechanical problems. We appreciate things can go wrong but the steam train was the attraction.

At the station it was a short walk to the diesel train and carriages. The carriages were reminiscent of my childhood, upholstered seating, straps to operate the windows and the obligatory clank clank throughout the journey. The scenery was pleasant enough despite the rain and we arrived at the terminal at Grovane 30 minutes later.

All in all it was enjoyable, but we would not have gone had we known there was to be "NO STEAM TODAY".

On returning to the ship we complained - to no avail.

What a wonderful journey. The scenery is stunning and the atmosphere of the railway superb. The carriages and loco (unfortunately not steam on the day) were so interesting.

This old steam engine locomotive is a very charming 30 minute ride in nice scenery.
It departs from Grovane station in Vennesla and arrives at Røyknes.

If you are a train fan then this is an absolute must-do. But also for others in all ages this is a nice experience.

This a living museum. The railway was opened in 1896 and was for many years the only narrow gauche rail system in this area. In 1938 it was connected to the main line between Kristiansand and Oslo - later also Stavanger. But that line was standard gauche, and Grovane was the station where the two lines were connected. In 1962 the line was closed down, but some enthusiasts started a "hobby" train activity. To day this is the place for an historic museum and the ride with the old steamtrain from more than 100 years back starts here. You will see and feel how it was to travel with the old train the 8 km to Røyknes. A very good experience.

What a super trip on an historic train putted by a beautiful steam engine through some amazing scenary which would have been even more wonderful without the rain obscuring the views. So much hard work has been put into getting this train and line restored. We totally recommend this attraction for a visit.
