Fantastic views throughout....great guide from local village who were all so friendly. My other half doesn't have good balance so didn't manage to climb the falls, and is a decent trek to get around them but does meet at the top which is lovely. Great boat ride to get to the village

I'll start with saying that it was a nice 1 day trek. Nice views, nice to walk through the waterfalls. But it didn't feel like there were a lot of waterfalls there and they are not so impressive.

How to get there and not through an agency:
1. Getting a boat from the dock. We walked up to the dock and asked the man in the ticket booth how much would a boat to don mongh costs. After that went to the boats and asked a man on the boat, he offered us a cheaper price. The people from the ticket office followed us and started to threat the man on the boat so he said he can't take us and that they will call a police - conclusion: Go straight to the boats and don't ask in the ticketing office.
In the end we agreed about 300,000 kip for the boat for both directions.
We were 13 people.
2. When we arrived to the village we had to take a guide with us (50,000kip for the whole group) and each of us had to pay an entrance fee of 10,000 kip.
To sum it all it was about 36,000 kip a person in a 13 people group, instead of about 160-180k for a person through one of the agencies.

The waterfalls themselves are amazing and definitely worth visiting from Nong Khiaw - possibly our favourite trek so far in Laos - it took just over half a day and we were knackered by the time we returned!

However, if you can avoid it, don't overpay the tour companies to take you! The boat to the village of Ban Don Khoun can be paid for on the riverfront and costs 300k. When you get to the village, it costs 10k for entrance and 50k for a group to hire a local guide from the village - they walk you up to the waterfalls (about 45-60 min), then guide you through walking through the waterfalls (45-60min) and then back down to the village. So if you can get a group of people together it is much cheaper to do it yourself - we had a group of 5 so it only cost 90k each. The tours are about 200-250k per person depending upon how many participants but they do also go to a set of caves, they provide some food and our village guide didn't speak English. I would guess that we could have paid our guide more to take us there too but as a group of reasonably fit 25-35 year olds we were tired enough after the trek to the waterfalls and back! So, in summary, I would definitely recommend doing it this way, especially if you're on a budget!

This is a very unique hike. We were able to join a group of four others. We were all in our late 50's and 60's and the guide was so helpful when anyone needed a hand up. It was a bit of a workout but so much fun. Lunch at the top of the waterfalls was timely. Wear good non slip water shoes - not flip flops. It's one of those things you should just spend the money to do when you are in Nong Khiew - you won't find anything like it in many places in the world.

Make sure to book a private guide and go before the large groups from the tour operators start off. Then you will have a very nice trip! Be careful, it's very slippery climbing the waterfall. And be aware of leeches... but you will be awarded with really nice cascades and a stunning view at the top. We've made some experiences touring around here, if you'd like recommendations: contact me.

The 100 waterfalls hike is amazing. After a 40 minute boat ride down the Nam Ou, we walked through a small village, a creek, and some beautiful rice fields to the base of the first of 100 waterfalls. from there, the hike is exhilarating. We walked through a scenic and covered creek up the waterfalls. the rocks were not slippery, and it was fun hiking with you hands and feet. The view at the top is nice and a good place to stop and eat. It's about 4 hours of walking total-- not too strenuous, though you will be walking through water, you will get muddy, and you will have to be on the lookout for leeches. We went through a company in Nong Khiew for $17USD a person. It would be impossible to find this trail without a guide.

I've hiked a lot and this hike is one of my favorites.

This is a new attraction that you can arrange from Nong Khiaw. Leaving Nong Khiaw at 09:00 and returning around 15:00, much of the time is spent on the scenic boat ride and the walk through the village and fields to the start of the waterfalls. From there the real fun starts, climbing through the waterfalls to the top where you'll have lunch.

The waterfalls are fun but only last an hour - not very long given the price.

We booked a one day trip with Tiger Trails. Departed at 9 am and took a one hour boat ride in an open motorized canoe downstream. In a village we took the trail to the falls. There are lots of small waterfalls and a few big ones where you could shower or climb around a bit. We appreciated the nice breeze at the top where we ate lunch

Later we visited another village and then checked out a cave on the way back. Overall a nice place.

Wore hiking sandals which I would recommend since they could get wet. It was very easy to keep backpack dry.

A great experience and a lot of fun. Don't be misled, this is not about seeing large waterfalls. It is a great local experience that firstly entails a locally hired boat that takes you about 45 minutes to the village where you must hire a local guide and pay the entrance fee to the village. Our boatman organised this for us and did the walk with us. From there you walk through streams and along rice paddies till you reach the base of the falls(about an hour ). These are more a series of cascades that you walk and climb up. Before returning essentially the same way. We had a ball. That includes 2 forty something parents our 9 year old boy and young French backpacker. Beware of leeches. Please note, like alot of tours in Laos this would have been ridiculously expensive if done through the local tour company. We did it for less than half there fee easily and safely.

The hike was nice enough, but to us it felt mostly like a school trip and not like something I would fly to Laos to do. I would have enjoyed it more as a day hike back home with friends, but it's not what I expected when I go abroad and pay 200,000 kip. It was short and not very exciting. To be honest we came from India and Nepal so maybe our standards were too high, but nothing about this hike was exciting, not the views, not the walk, not the waterfalls, not the guide, not lunch (sticky rice). Not worth the money.
