About
The Heritage Centre is a modern building constructed, in part, from three historic buildings. Within the building we have two Heritage Rooms with displays providing an insight into the history of the villages of Mountsorrel and Rothley. Granite's Coffee shop is also housed within the building. Outside you can find the Nunckley Trail, our half mile nature and history walk which winds its way through the woodland south of Nunckley Hill, and the shorter Spinney Trail with den building area for the children. The Mountsorrel Railway has a platform in the base of the quarry, a small railway museum, and narrow and standard gauge sidings. A further exhibition building includes displays covering the Geology of Charnwood Forest, quarrying at Mountsorrel, and the history of the Mountsorrel Railway, including the story of its restoration Please note if your Sat Nav does not understand LE7 7UE then use LE7 7SJ.

- Tom T2 contributionsPerfect Easter WeekendVisted Granite's today whilst staying with family for the Easter weekend. What an amazing place! The setting, food, service and staff are all excellent, even though the venue was very busy. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. If you look at the website the site looks huge and the maps make you think you are going to walk for miles. No, it’s quaint and kind of tiny but beautiful all the same and great value for money.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 May 2024
- TorquayTripperRothley, United Kingdom110 contributionsExceptional value for money. Great day out. This place just gets better on every visit, as Granite’s cafe is non profit making and any money made goes back into improving all the facilities, making such a great day out, especially with kids. The Crazy Golf has been rebuilt and extended, the model railway has been improved. The den building area in the woods now has a lovely path leading up hill to a great view overlooking the Memorial Garden with pretty wild flowers. There is now a working mini train that gives you theee laps of the garden (great value at £1 for kids £2 for adults). There is also a little woodland trail with wildlife info boards. It does cost £1 for kids & £2 for adults to get into the museum, woods, nature trail areas. Crazy golf isn’t too pricey, I think it was £2.50 each. The cafe has gorgeous food on offer and ice creams. See photos. Well done to everyone who works so hard to make this place a lovely day out!!Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 May 2024
- RogW2018Leicester, United Kingdom5 contributionsA Great, Fun Experience - for youngsters of all ages and parents/grandparents tooWe took our 18 month old grandson for his first ride on the narrow gauge railway....and he loved the ride! He was able to sit in the drivers cab too, keen to try every lever (under careful supervision) and sound the horn. Great fun. The whole experience was creative, allowing him to walk around a beautiful safe garden track and look at items of machinery, such as a real tractor (like his favourite toy). The volunteers who run and maintain this Heritage Centre deserve high praise for the design, care and many points of interest of this excellent child friendly area. Well worth the visit - please support this important site of industrial heritage for our futures. THANK YOU, from Roger & Chris, Rothley.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 23 July 2024
- Paul S8 contributionsImaginative, informative, plenty for all to enjoyOutstandingly imaginative, catering equally for families, older folk and visitors wishing to learn about the important quarries nearby. Important relics, indoor and outdoor displays in a beautiful quarry garden setting. Excellent interpretation boards. There is a well-signed nature trail, attractive play areas and - on busy days - a model railway and crazy golf. All for a very modest entrance fee. Trains run along a short branch line to the Great Central Railway on occasional Sundays. The friendly cafe is run very efficiently and has delicious food and drinks. Exceptional care has been taken to make both indoor and outdoor spaces accessible to wheelchair users.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 September 2024

Today we revisited Mountsorrel & Rothley Community Heritage Centre great few hours the entrance fee is now Adults £2 children £1 infants free. There's a new memorial garden which has historical info all the way round and a Gauge Train which is priced the same as entrance Adults £2 children £1. There's a shed which includes all the information about the quarry and another shed with carriages. There's few different walks, one of which has a few sensory items around it. There's a golf course which I was told Is being renovated. There's also a miniature train garden set up which you can drive the trains for £1.50 for 5mins. Near this there is den making.
There is an expendive cafe, seated area outside & play park. Located inside there is more historical information towards the back of the building. The site is No dogs see the photo for info
The charges have been implemented which I wasnt aware of however the site is well maintained.

We've visited the Heritage Centre many times since it opened. We've watched it grow over the years as the volunteers have added more and more things to see and do. We've really enjoyed the new Quarry Bottom train rides around the gardens this year and are looking forward to the revamped Crazy Golf reopening next year. There is a base charge of £2 adults and £1 children to round the site. This gives you access to 20 attractions inside the site that are open all year round. Its very good value at such a low price, plus there's no charge for parking. In addition to this there are various add on attractions which only operate on certain days and there's a small extra charge for, such as the new Quarry Bottom Railway mentioned above, which costs £2 and £1 a ride, This is a really good system as you only pay for the extra things that you want to do. The add on attractions also include the garden railway, footplate rides on a steam engine, the crazy golf (when it reopens) and on certain days each year the Great Central Railway offer full size train rides from Quorn to the Heritage Centre. There is a useful board at the entrance that tells you which of the extra attractions are running that particular day. Everything there has been created and is maintained and operated by volunteers from the community! It's all not for profit as well! Truely outstanding and inspirational! We feel so lucky to live locally to a gem like this!

Visited after the centre re-opened after lock-down and we were not disappointed.
The "social distancing" measures in place in the cafe were excellent and hand sanitisers and record books made us feel safe.
This centre is very interesting with lots to see and do for free and the cafe serves quality food and drinks at reasonable prices. Friendly staff.
All in all a great place to visit.

Big rip off with very rude staff. We paid the entrance fee and it was heavily implied that the price included the narrow gauge railway as well as the diesel train running that day. The young lady we bought the entrance ticket advised we could get on the diesel train providing we were wearing our entrance stickers so this seemed to suggest it was included. However, on boarding the train we were told it was £9 per person with one of the men being very rude saying “did you really expect to go on a ten mile trip for £2?!” We then found there was an additional charge for the narrow gauge railway. We feel it should have been clearly advertised before entering that there are additional charges once inside. Also disappointed to see that the miniature golf (still on the maps etc) no longer exists. Maybe have a higher entrance fee to cover everything or, if you want to charge for individual activities, don’t charge to get in.
We have visited many times in the past but won’t be returning again. We felt it is trying to be something it’s not and has lost its original charm

Wonderful heritage experience in the original Mountsorrel Quarry. There were several things to see and do, including a narrow gauge railway ride around the wonderful gardens, a museum and a couple of nature trails. Great for all the family.

Visited the Heritage Centre at the half term holiday. Two adults and three children. We were surprised at the level of charging that has been introduced for entry to the grounds. It cost £7 for our family which was a bit of a blow. It has always been free before. Regrettably this simply meant less spent on ice creams or garden railway. Surely this was of no advantage to the business.

I’ve driven past the heritage centre many times but never been in. The car park is quite small but I managed to find a space. You enter though the building the serves as a cafe and shop which means there was a queue to get in followed by a queue to get a coffee. There are walks and activities for the children but I wanted to look around the old railway. There were some gentlemen working on the narrow gauge locomotives who were very friendly but despite the fact it was quite busy there was nothing running which was a shame. The museum though was really interesting with lots of information about the local railways. Back at the main building there was another queue to buy a guidebook. I think of the hour I was there at least 20 minutes was queuing. I will definitely go back but wait for an event day when things are running.

Visited with my 4yo who is fascinated with all things to do with trains. He loved the play area and the remote control trains that you can drive for a small fee (1.70 for 5mins). We ate at the cafe which was lovely and the cakes were delicious. Great place to spend an afternoon with young kids or if you are a train enthusiast.

Visited today for the first time and was very impressed by both the site and the staff could not have been better. The Granite coffee shop was reasonably busy and the service excellent. The food was well prepared, presented and tasty. The site had a feeling of calm despite the number of people present.
The museum is well worth a visit with a selection of railway items. We will definitely be going again.

Went to the cafe on our walk and were pleasantly surprised by how much was here. We enjoyed the heritage museum with lots of local history and pictures. Some could find the information boards a bit wordy. The station and railway exhibits were interesting and there is a lovely plant shop. Nature walk is well laid out with fun activities for children. Beautiful views over the site. There was also crazy golf and a Thomas Minature Railway(small charge for these two events).
