- h20mppPlymouth, United Kingdom126 contributionsA stop off for lunchWe chose to stop off at the very picturesque village of Otterton for lunch and decided on the mill after reading reviews. There is a large car park so parking was no issue. The restaurant is located amongst the various mill buildings and is set over two floors. We chose the open beef sandwich which came with salad and crisps. We also chose a side of triple cooked chips to share. The food was great, service polite and the overall cost not excessive. We finished off our visit with a look round the mill gift and craft shop along with the mill workings which are still in use to supply the on site artisan bakery. A very nice visit. Thanks for a great review, we hope that you are able to join us again soon.Written 16 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 April 2024
- Little_Kingfisher24 contributionsExcellent experienceExcellent experience. We had a wonderful time at the Otterton Mill and so did my brother's dog who was well behaved. We sat outside. The atmosphere was warm and friendly with other customers chatting amongst themselves. The food was fresh and delicious. I had local pan fried fish on a bed of chopped potatoes and other vegetables. It was cooked to perfection and a delight to eat. My companions had fish and chips which were very tasteful and the other dish was portobello mushrooms which were healthy and enjoyed thoroughly. The staff were all friendly and professional and made us feel welcomed. I would recommend the Otterton Mill for a meal, refreshments, and fresh produce from the shop. The craft shop also stocks many interesting items to purchase and look at.Thank you for such great feedback, we are delighted to receive your recommendation. - Pritesh MLeamington Spa, United Kingdom727 contributionsGood visitThe mill is funded by the shop and restaurant so there is no cost to see it. A few notes around explain how the mill works and it is kept in a presentable and working condition. If there was a schedule of when the milling activities were taking place then that would be good and during the summer holidays they should consider (if feasible) more than twice a month. We did buy some gifts and some bread from the shop. However, we did eat the bread two days after so was not as tasty as it could have been, but it was good still. NB. Bread was pricier than superstore prices (but that is expected), but this cost cover the whole experience. Definitely a place to visit and if you buy the local produce, you will have good quality locally produce food and support the mill.Thank you for your review, we are delighted you enjoyed your visit, all our Milling dates and events are listed on our website and social media , please do keep an eye out for these. We live locally and called in for our first visit. The food shop is cramped and the produce is extremely expensive and I couldn’t see how they justified the pricing. The craft/gift shop was also over priced. The lasting memory will be the “unfriendly feeling” and terse signage telling you not to touch anything. The only enjoyable element was a chance to view the original mill workings, surprisingly this was free!!! We will not be returning to this place!

Thank you for your review, clearly we understand the Mill will not be to everyone's taste, and this is clear from your own first and last visit.
Fortunately, the Mill is a much loved destination with new excellent visitor facilities including the farmshop, toilets and studio cafe, and continues to go from strength to strength.
We are delighted you enjoyed the ability to view the Mill and workings which as you say is free to all and attracts many thousands of visitors year round many of whom return time and time again.
We do hope you find more suited destinations to your taste in the future.
Kind Regards

Stopped off here for breakfast before heading out on a walk. I was a bit late for breakfast which finished at 11am as I’d driven from Cornwall. But I still managed to grab a Cumberland sausage bap and cappuccino from the take out van along with a cream tea scone to take on my walk. Despite being really busy with a big queue the lady serving in the takeout van was very friendly and smiley. My sandwich came out from the main kitchen really fast and was very fresh. My scone was also super delicious. I’d love to come back here again. Great location a s great food.

This was our first visit for a couple of years after being regular monthly visitors. £17 for cold tea, a small Soya latte, cheese and ham doorstep sandwich with a few crisps and a dot of salad plus a small slice of Gluten free cake that tasted like a lump of pure sugar. We had to ask for the table to be cleaned which was done immediately after the same cloth had been used to wipe the door into the bakery. The toilets were also unkempt. For the money it should be spot on. Won’t bother again.

We are disappointed to read your review, and your comments which having spoken to the team does not appear to have been raised at the time.
Our front of house team work exceptionally hard to ensure tables which are as a rule in constant use are wiped clean between guests , particularly those outside in our courtyard. I am shocked that you find our new toilet facilities unkept , we deep clean them at the start of every day and throughout service , they are well stocked and maintained through out.
Our Gluten free cakes come from an award winning local supplier as being a flour mill we do not produce them on site, they are very popular. Our menu we believe is competitively priced using locally sourced produce, the quality of which we would stand by.
Clearly your visit was not to your liking which is very disappointing, we can only apologise belatedly via this forum and hope that you reconsider you decision. The Mill is as many reviews state well thought of, but fully understand other venues may be more to you liking.
Kind Regards

We have visited previously a couple of years ago, so on a wet day thought we would visit for some lunch. It was lovely, fresh local products and friendly staff, in an enchanting environment what more could you want.
The only point I would make is more noticeable sinage for the covid requests as I wasn't aware I needed to wear a mask whilst walking around outdoors. It was only when a member of staff told me I realised.

Thank you for your 5 star review, we are delighted you enjoyed your visit. We only expect visitors to wear masks inside or whilst waiting to enter a building. Some people prefer to wear one all the time but our understanding is walking around outside this is not mandatory.

Visited here after walking from Budleigh Salterton, we arrived at about 2pm and the heavens were starting to open but we were able to find a table with shelter (there were quite a few available). There were bowls of water for my dog and she was allowed to sit with us at the table.
We had a voucher for a cream tea and I asked for mine to be gluten free (as I'm intolerant). Service was welcoming and quick and the scones (pictured) were delicious. I was given the option of fruit or plain (which is a novelty in itself!). When it came out the gluten free one was smaller (as they usually are) but I was delighted to see that in order to make up for it I was given two! They were warm and absolutely delicious and the jam and cream were wonderful too.
Thank you for this, it's not much fun being gluten intolerant but small things like this make it all the more bearable!
I'm looking forward to returning to try more of your gluten free menu!

We happened across Otterton Mill during a walk and what a fabulous surprise. The shop is stocked with all sorts of goodies and the restaurant serves delicious food. We left with full bellies and heavy backpacks. Such a great place.

We visited because my other half used to go a lot as a child and had lots of positive memories here.
There is lots of outdoor seating, although the tables aren’t cleaned/wipes down. This does mean the bits of jam and cake left over attract a lot of wasps! However, it’s outdoor seating and it’s not a fancy restaurant, so if you’re happy with a picnic table style lunch, it won’t be an issue.
We ordered 2 cream teas, one sweet and one savoury. Both scones were rock solid and ice cold. There was a blonde hair in my jam. We asked if we could have our scones warmed a little and the waitress said yes and took them away. We waited 10-15 minutes, by which point we’d finished our drinks and were ready to go home. We assumed the staff were just really busy.
We went inside to find out what had happened to our scones, to find all the staff gossiping together. Whoever had taken our scones away hadn’t taken them to the kitchen, and the manager came out to refund us. At no point was there an apology, or even any suggestion that there had been a problem on their end. The manager was rude and hostile. We were polite throughout, even though we were quite frustrated with our missing scones. There was no need for such poor customer service.
I hope some changes are made with staff training as this used to be such a lovely place, and it has so much potential, but is let down by rude and unprofessional staff.

We are sorry to receive your review, as we were at the time that a genuine mistake was made, for which I apologise.
The scones did come into the kitchen, and left after warming in the oven, (it was me that did it ) unfortunately what happened was the were taken to the wrong table by one of our younger new team members, and accepted by those guests.
Until you came back into the restaurant the team were unaware there was a problem. We do understand that you did not then wish to wait for more scones as you were ready to leave, so a refund was processed.
Our front of house team wait to run both food and drinks from the area beside the till so at times this may look like they are not busy, but I can assure you this is not the case.
I apologise if any team member came over as rude, this would not have been their intention.
Kind Regards
Chris Wright

We had a lovely meal at Otterton mill and the food was excellent. However some of the staff (two in particular) were very rude and hostile. We also witnessed them slating their other young staff member and making comments about her. This is very unprofessional in front of customers. No one should be bullied in the work place! The lady with brown hair in a pony tail / glasses was very rude and very hostile. She wasn’t pleasant and made us feel very unwelcome. She was also the lady who was slating a young staff member. Very saddened to witness this at Otterton Mill!

Yes - lots of seating outside some of which is covered- all of which dogs can go in. I’m not sure if dogs can Go inside but I suspect they can
Lovely walk from Budleigh Salterton to Otterton and back with a coffee break at Otterton Mill - heat field dogs especially if they like swimming in the robe as several beach areas on the rivers where they can go in
