It's an easy 15mins of the main highway on gravel, then the fun begins: a very steep climb followed by a trek through sheep paddocks take you to the entrance. The caves themselves don't seem to be anything that special but then we didn't explore to far.... but the whole trip there is quintessential Kiwi and if you can take... More

Very steep at the beginning of the hike. When we got to the caves it was well worth the hike. We are a little bit older and not in shape but made it.

Quite steep access track that flattens out to a countryside stroll. Cave is dark with ladders and steps already there.

If you are into caves and glow worms then this is a must. The main cave guided by the local council is good for all the familiy and has staircase built in side to climb in and out. There are a larger series of caves around the area but you would need a guide and special climbing equipment to navigate... More

The walk up to the cave is about twenty-five minutes through farmland, and is reasonably steep for the most part. However the views you get along the walk are lovely, and it is nice to take your time up and enjoy the view. The cave itself isn't overly big, and has quite a bit of silt/mud so wear shoes you... The Mangaone Cave is more about the trip than the destination. Set in a beautiful valley at the top of a very steep hill; it is a small and quite silty/muddy cave. Bring a tourch to explore but do not expect Waitomo.

If you're into caves, great scenery and a dirt road. This is the place for you. 40 km from Wairoa, 6 km up the narrow, winding and unsealed Mangaone Valley Road. Turn off SH 2, approximately 4 km north of Nuhaka or 5 km south of Morere Springs. Wairoa. About a 30 minute walk to the caves one way, it... More
