We would recommend this canal boat owner/small company to anyone! (We have hired from large boat companies previously - not owners) Communication with Laura was efficient and she got back to any queries and questions quickly. Laura and Dana gave us a lovely welcome and they shared good advice about the canal and gave excellent instructions about the workings of the boat (engine/heating etc.). Acorn (the smaller of the two boats) is beautifully decorated and very well equipped. The bed was cosy and very comfortable and the heating is effective for the cooler evenings. Maps of the canal are supplied, as was a wonderful welcome pack of all kinds of food, from wine to bread, butter and eggs, as well as delicious fruit. The boat was scrupulously clean. There is plenty of storage on board for bags etc. Dana and Laura gave us a tour of the larger boat on our return (it's equally tastefully decorated and well equipped) and we hope that we might use this bigger boat in the future for a holiday with friends. (It did take us a little while to locate the home mooring of the canal boat from the postcode, but in the summer months a sign is there to help you find the narrow road to the mooring!) Laura and Dana are splendid folks and they will ensure you have the best canal trip possible. The rest is up to you!

I would absolutely recommend hiring canal boat from Drifting Wood - boat was fabulous, Laura was efficient and communicative, Dana gave great boat handling training, we loved the welcome basket of products and had a great time on the Llangollen canal taking in the tunnels and viaducts and narrows. A great trip! Thank you.

Had a cracking 3 day break on the Mighty Oak. The boat is brand new so everything is pretty much perfect (Dana & Laura are working hard to sort the few tiny niggles remaining & love to hear your feedback). The handover / pick up was comprehensive - way better than some of the others we saw whilst we were out - and as a small business (only 2 boats) you get expert care and attention all the time. The boat is superbly spec'd & if you're tall (one of our party is 6'4") the great headroom is a blessing.

Hi guys! Niggles and all ;o) Thank you for putting this up for us, every single time someone takes their own time to put a review up we smile ... We smile as these really do help others decide if we are what we say we are, you have made it pretty clear, we are :o) And that's 6'4" at the side, I must actually measure the height as I'm pretty sure it's higher than I originally thought watching you guys walking through! It would be fab to see you again now you have your canal legs and you could venture Chester way or beyond! Take care x

We had an amazing boat week. The Mighty Oak was absolutely beautifully equipped and designed - with lovely details. Welcome package was lovely with fresh fruit, coffee, tea, homemade jam, etc. we loved it.

The introduction to the boat handling was very careful and detailed, so we felt quite good and safe, when we continued our journey at the Llangollen Canal on our own. Also the recommendations of Laura and Dana only to go in the direction of Llangollen and not beyond Grindley Brook was excellent. It is an advanture going on a 62 feet boat and you have to get used to handle the tiller and you have to get a 'feeling for the boat'. Therefor it was useful to have bridges at the beginning which are easy to handle and the wide part of the canal with enough space to pass by other boats. Once you have kind of a routine in handling you won't panic when you pass the narrows after the high and narrow Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Also locks and tunnels could be passed very well as Laura and Dana also provide you with walkie talkies that enables a good communication between crew members.

All together Llangollen Canal was the perfect start for us as newbies in canal boating - we met friendly people at the few wharfs, that always offered help and encouraged us, when we thought we would never manage to pass other boats or narrow passages on the canal.

There was not a minute when we felt bored - it was a real family adventure and a extraordinary experience!
Thanks to Laura & Dana!

An amazing experience and a really enjoyable holiday. Laura and Dana are lovely, knowledgeable and friendly people. The boat very well fitted out, comfortable and ran like a dream.
They explained everything that we needed to know and were guided by Dana for a short stretch of our journey out.
We were even given a little memento of our holiday when we arrived back.
If you are thinking of taking a holiday on a canal then I would recommend Driftwood.
Welcome pack
Thanks, Laura and Dana.

Hello Thank you for taking the time to put this review up ... As we often say, it's fine us saying 'book with us, we care!', but it isn't until people who have actually ventured out with us that you could really know it to be true! That is why it is so important that those looking for a canal adventure can read what you guys say and then know we really do care :o) Thank you x

A fantastic holiday and a great experience.
As complete novices to a barge holiday my wife and l booked with my Mom and Stepdad (also our miniature Schnauzer Archie)
From our first enquiry to our welcome return Laura and Dana were wonderful.
Acorn is everything you need and more to experience the joy of a canal barge holiday. The barge is presented immaculately with all the home comforts you need. Before setting off on your adventure Laura and Dana offer expert guidance and assistance to not only boost your confidence but making sure a great holiday is enjoyed by all.
If anyone is thinking of such a family break Driftwood (Laura and Dana) are certainly the people to call.
So many thanks ladies xx

What can I say! Thank you so much ... you can't see me but I'm smiling like an idiot ;o) We are so happy you guys all enjoyed your adventure on Acorn. And, as I always say, it is an adventure! It is also lovely to see you have mentioned how we do try to make people feel as confident as possible .. but that only happens when people do listen to our 'advice' to watch The Boaters Handbook. So a massive thank you to you all as it was obvious you had from how you cruised so easily back into her moorings! 10 out of 10! x

Amazing holiday thank you so much! We haven't been on a canal holiday with the kids before and although we've spent a few days here and there on a friend's boat, it's not quite the same as taking the reins fully and going off on a family holiday for a few days. We booked 4 days and by day 3 were wishing we'd booked for longer. Laura and Dana were absolutely amazing, communication was great and we turned up confident we knew all we needed to. We had a tour of the boat to start with by Dana, then Laura showed us the technical bits before Dana took us out for a little bit to make sure we were confident in controlling the boat. Laura was on the other end of the phone if we needed anything which was really reassuring as well.
We headed up to Llangollen and moored in Llangollen basin on the 2nd evening heading back on day 3. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and even our 10 and 13 year olds enjoyed (despite our worries they'd get bored) there is so much to do being part of the crew, we took it in turns with the walkie talkies (supplied with the boat) walking up front keeping an eye out for other boats and warning the skipper. We counted our steps and chatted to other boaters along the way. We stopped at a few pubs on the way as well ☺️ Everyone had a turn driving the boat including the kids (on the less windy bits)
Drifting wood has the edge on other canal boat holidays, thinking of everything that is needed. A beautiful selection of food and drink was waiting for us on day 1, including a fruit bowl, cheese, ham, seeded bread, and even wine. We were provided with 2 maps and walkie talkies, there was plenty of storage (underbed and 2 wardrobes), loads of cooking utensils, tea, coffee, sugar, salt & pepper, cooking oil etc. You really do just need to bring yourselves, clothes and a sense of adventure!

We're already looking at dates to book for next year, if you were on the fence, just get it booked, you'll absolutely not be disappointed ☺️

We had the pleasure of taking out the beautiful Mighty Oak for a 3 night trip and had a fantastic time. Everything had been thought of, with so many small touches and attention to detail. The Mighty Oak is well thought out and furnished with everything you could need, along with the comfiest bed!
A special mention to Laura and Dana who are just fantastic, thank you so much, we will absolutely be back again!

We spent 2 days on drifting wood's newest boat 'the mighty oak' and had THE best time. Laura and Dana were so welcoming and friendly, they really made us feel at ease and were great with my 4 year old. The boat was immaculate and nothing was too much trouble.
We were left a lovely hamper of snacks with food and drinks in the fridge too for our stay.
I can not recommend them enough, it was great and just what we needed.

We had an overnight adventure on "the mighty oak".Laura and Dana were superb from start to finish, they took us on a 7 hour trip and made our grand son jenson (4) skipper for the day.the boat is immaculate with everything you need for a relaxing trip up the canal.laura and Dana were very knowledgeable about the area and couldn't have been better hosts.we docked overnight at Grindley Brook and watched the boats going through the locks.if you've never been on one of these boats then do it now a brilliant experience and couldn't get two better hosts.
