- James P6 contributionsCowboy Cookout was the perfect end to our Honeymoon! We went for the Horseback Trail Ride with BBQ Cookout and we could not have enjoyed it anymore. The whole team were friendly, attentative and knowledgable, particularly our guides on the trail Floss and Noel (we hope we got your names right) who were supportive throughout. We had little to no experience riding between us, but the team were great at introducing us to the horses and showing everyone how to both ride and respect the horse at the same time. The trail is a fantastic mix of hill climbs and river trails, with amazing views of Banff's famous scenery. The Cookout itself was also a croud pleaser. Steak cooked how you like and great quality too with a tasty range of extra sides. We were even given the opportunity to learn how to lasso all while getting to know the BTR team. We are from the UK and have been exploring Canada, and this is up there with one of our best experiences. This is a must do experience for anyone visiting Banff!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 June 2024
- TeresaStockholm, Sweden29 contributionsA slice of paradise in the Back CountryI went on a six day riding tour through Wild Women Expeditions and it was just so much fun: fantastic bunch of women who formed a fabulous group; a real team, led on by our riding guide Natalie Cowan, who as well as being a bunch of fun and kindness, was a knowledgeable horse woman. The Canadian Rockies are spectacular, and wild. But coming to Halfway Lodge made you feel so comfortable. In the very capable hands of Tigan Colby the little lodge in the midst of the backlands was shipshape, and the food, even for a very picky European, was amazing. Unfortunately the stay was only for three nights. I could have stayed all summer. The scenery, the food, the horses and the company made it a slice of paradise. Adding to that feeling was the lack of internet access- a bliss! On our way up and down the mountain we had the pleasure of staying at Sundance lodge, also very nice, but not as breathtakingly beautiful as Halfway. Adding to our groups pleasure was that all of us had ridden before. I would advise against braving this trip if you have no riding experience; not least for the sake of the horses!Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 16 July 2024

We went with our two children who are 8 and 11. Nicole who was one of the guides was amazing with the children and we felt really comfortable that they were safe the whole time whilst on the horses. The BBQ food was delicious and the horses were unbelievably well trained. We do not usually ride horses and I would definitely recommend this to anybody.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 August 2024
- Brenda SPender Island, Canada5 contributionsBeautiful 4 day ride with Banff Trail RidersMy friend and I rode with BTR on the four day Erling Storm trip. We really enjoyed it. The group was a nice size at 6 riders plus the guide. They have a barn of solid & safe horses. The food is excellent and the accommodations are well equipped and very comfortable. The staff are super friendly and helpful. I loved that we didn’t have cell or internet service because we interacted with each instead of our devices. Make sure you have 3 seasons worth of clothes as weather can be unpredictable in the mountains. Highly recommend!Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 25 August 2024

- Brooke MNottingham, United Kingdom347 contributionsCowboy cookout via horsebackWe did the evening cowboy cookout experience with a one hour ride along Bow river to the dining area and one hour back via windy knoll. It was a pretty unique experience with some amazing views out and back, and the cookout was fun with some games and a great cowboy dinner of steak, beans, cornbread, potatoes and slaw. The only negatives I have for this experience are that because my horse was a little naughty it pulled out of line pretty early on, so I rejoined at the back and was never given an opportunity to get back in line next to my husband, so I felt a little lonely for an hour until the rest stop! The other point being that the guide upfront was describing lots of points of interest which would’ve been nice for the back guide to repeat so the rest of the group could learn too. But overall this was a good experience, great for people of all ages and experience levels.Thank you for sharing your experience with our evening cowboy cookout. We're delighted to hear you enjoyed the unique views, fun games, and delicious dinner. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by your horse pulling out of line. It's unfortunately part of the work with animals, as they have their own personalities and moments. We appreciate your kind words and hope to welcome you back for another adventure soon. - Explorer612285799211 contributionRide in the MuckMy tour is not listed, but was the 3 hour ride and cook out! We were a family group of 8, three kids and five adults. While we were treated well and given more than adequate instructions as to how things would proceed and the cook out was good, the food provided being quite delicious, the one big disappointment was there was very little scenery to be seen. This ride had twelve people with two guides. The female guide in front was supposedly the tour speaker however if you are stuck in the middle of the group many a time she could not be heard let alone understood what she was saying! Secondly almost the entire time save for the portion of the trip along part of the Bow River was in a very heavily treed area with very little sunlight and almost the entire time the horses were walking through several inches of nothing but mud, sloppy mud and you kept hoping you would not fall off the horse into that sloppy muddy muck! No view there ! On the way back we did go a different trail up up across some mountains but again no view because you were in the woods. At the end as we came close to the stables we did go through a small area we actually saw some mountains in the distance with the setting sun which was quite beautiful! Hmm I don’t think I would recommend this trip to anyone as being scenic. It’s not !Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're pleased to hear that you found our instructions clear and enjoyed the cookout. However, we're sorry to learn that the scenery did not meet your expectations and that you had difficulty hearing the guide. We appreciate your input and hope to have the opportunity to serve you better in the future. - Brad C5 contributionsWonderful experience - definitely recommend! What a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. My wife and I did the 3 hour ride taking in the Bow River and Windy Knoll and had the most wonderful time. Having never ridden before I was slightly nervous but the team of Jess and Holly were brilliant at explaining all the necessary details to give us confidence, and within a few minutes we were raring to go. The scenery is beautiful and I found the experience incredibly relaxing. Big shout out to Holly who rode along behind me and throughout the trip shared stories and anecdotes of horse riding and living and working in Banff. I would highly recommend!Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 September 2024
- travelling_jo_181 contributionsSundance ride and cowboy cookoutOnly a short walk outside of Banff Town and easy to find. Friendly horses and staff. Easy to follow instructions before the ride, even though I have never ridden before the team made sure we felt safe and in control at all times. The ride itself was a slow pace, allowing us to take in the beautiful scenery and interesting local knowledge from the 2 tour guides. The steak dinner was spot on. The tour delivered everything they promised, and all the couples we spoke to really enjoyed the experience. Highly recommend if you are in the areaVisited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 September 2024

My girlfriend and i did the 2 hour Sundance tour, and we both strongly feel it was a rip off. People on walking trails beside us were nearly passing us as we went along , and we definitely never trotted. The guide in the front was talkative, however there was 7 of us walking in a tight line (1guide , 6 clients) , I was 3ed from the back and i had to strain to hear anything that was said , and i relayed things i found kinda neat to the ladies behind me cause they couldn’t hear a thing the whole time. Definitely not worth 130$ per person, I recommend walking/biking the trail on your own however there are many more beautiful trails i would recommend over that one.
The guide mentioned that hikers and bikers do not like horses being in the park , and after this tour i would say there is no need for them as they add nothing to the experience of the beautiful Banff National Park.

We booked a one hour ride for four people, however they didnt even have enough horses for us. The staff was rude, had a bad attitude and BULLIED my friend about his weight and his culture. She didn’t even apologies for her mistake. She refunded us the wrong amount of money. I over heard the ladies in the front talking about my friends traditional Indian turban. Telling him he couldn’t have bags with him on a horse and she laughed when he explained to her what a turban was. Karen’s should not be working in customer service.

I am extremely disappointed and unhappy with the lack of service, dismissive and rude attitude and overall lack of consideration by your staff during our recent experience at the Banff facility. We were originally booked into the Jasper stables...but had to scramble for a last minute change due to the fires. I booked your 2 hour Sundance Loop for Monday August 12. My 17 year old nephew was visiting from Ontario for the first time ever. We arrived on time to a fairly wet rainy day..but we were dressed for the day. As we walked up it was obvious that something was amiss as a family was leaving saying that they were told "it was too wet for them to ride". They did not have a booking...so we thought we would be ok.
We checked in with plenty of time and our experience quickly went bad. My nephew was the first to step on your "scale". He is a 17 year old Gr. 12 athlete...plays basketball and some volleyball. He just had his physical to return to school and weighs 183 lbs. Your staff declared that he was 232 lbs and that he would not be allowed do ride today. I am 66 years old...and not a high school athlete so I didn't even bother to step on your "scale". I questioned the accuracy of the scale and was rudely dismissed with a 'our scale is accurate" response. I then requested a refund and was told that as we were cancelling less than 24 hours ahead of time..we would not get a refund. They were very quick to offer us the steak cookout for the evening. Having no other options available we reluctantly agreed.
We returned at the appropriate time where we quickly saw a large group of people getting ready to ride for the cookout...many of whom were much heavier than me...and none of which were being weighed. I went in and questioned as to whether or not my nephew at least could ride for the cookout. I was yelled at...yes..yelled at. A staff member carrying a clip board declared that my nephew was in fact 238.5 lbs and that we had "MADE OUR DECISION". My nephew was so offended and upset that we simply left the property. It took me several hours to put him back together.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We deeply regret that your visit did not meet your expectations and that you and your nephew had a negative experience.
Firstly, we apologize for any perceived rudeness or dismissive behavior from our staff. This is not reflective of the service standards we strive to uphold, and we will address this internally.
Regarding the weight issue, we understand how frustrating this situation must have been for you and your nephew. The weight is taken fully clothed, which can sometimes cause a discrepancy between a guest's known weight and the reading on our scale. Our weight limit policy is in place to ensure the safety of both our riders and horses. We operate with rescued horses and they cannot carry more than the set up limit. These limits are the same on all our horseback rides, including the Cookout.
We did offer an alternative tour, the cookout wagon ride, as a way to accommodate you and your nephew given the circumstances. We are sorry that this option did not meet your expectations and that you chose not to accept it.
As for the refund policy, we have a strict 24-hour cancellation policy, which is clearly stated at the time of booking. This policy is in place to manage our resources and ensure the safety and enjoyment of all our guests. We understand this can be disappointing, especially under unforeseen circumstances, but we must adhere to this policy to maintain fairness and operational efficiency.
We are truly sorry that your nephew felt offended and upset. This was never our intention, and we regret that this experience impacted his visit.
We appreciate your feedback and will use it to improve our services. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us directly.

My friends and I booked the 2-hour Sundance Loop. We didn’t have any issues with check-in or initially with the safety briefing. I’ve done horseback riding on many other trips so it all seemed standard. The guide was also informative and cheerful.
The ride experience and the trail itself left a lot to be desired.
Although many horses seemed over worked / tired, my horse seemed fine most of the time (except that I needed to stop him from eating every other minute which was a handful). However, at the end of the ride when we were lining up to dismount, the horse behind mine was very agitated and spooked mine a few times, causing my horse to suddenly speed out of the line, which gave me a fright. The wranglers weren’t helpful in the situation and kept bringing my horse back in line in front of the other one (who seemed to have been very over it for the day at 5pm). Because of the horse behind us, my horse moved closer to the horse in front of us, and that agitated the horses all over again. By the third time this happened, I wanted OFF because I thought I could have been thrown off any second. Maybe this would never have happened, but the safety briefing didn’t address how to handle this situation at all, so I was extremely nervous. Instead of doing anything about it (like moving the horses away from each other or letting me dismount first), the wranglers just told me off for not managing the situation better. They then continued dismounting others / took pictures for the person on the horse behind me. Because of this, I left the experience with a bad taste.
The guide mentioned there’s 300+ horses at the stables (ranch?), which might explain why they don’t know how their horses’ quirks (and explain them to the rider). At other experiences I’ve had, the handlers knew exactly which horse could be around which. And they knew what actions might irritate each horse.
Besides that, as other reviewers have mentioned, the trail is only partially scenic. For a horse riding experience in Banff of all places, you’d think the whole trail would be spectacular. But a lot of it was in dense forest or awkwardly next to a paved walking / bike path.
Maybe this would be worth it if it was your first time horseback riding, but if not, save your money for future rides!!

Hi Holly,
Thank you for taking the time to review. Our trail rides are designed for riders of all abilities to be able to enjoy and take in the views of nature.
Although we do have many horses, our wranglers are familiar with all of them. Our horses are all rescues and are given plenty of days off and rest between tours so they are not over worked. We try to pair our hoses as best we can to match the rider and the other horses on the trial.
We're sorry to hear about your dismount experience but hope you enjoyed the rest of your ride and stay in Banff!

4hr sulphur mountain ride:
Absolutely amazing!!! We arrived on time and under weight as advertised when booking so had zero issues!! The horses were very well behaved (we even had 2 riders that had never rode before in our group) the trails are very easy going (I have rode before, but wouldn’t class myself as experienced) with a few steeper hills up and down and 2 river crossings. Our guide was fantastic and very informative on the trails…. Would highly recommend just make sure u know where ur going and what time to be there!

I would like to thank "Jam" and Wayne and Luke the work horses literally, for an awesome sleigh ride. Our driver was very friendly and knowledgeable. Beautiful scenery and not to bad of a day a bit windy but not bad. The only disappointment was we couldn't take the trail into the bush due to lack of snow but it didn't matter the entire ride was amazing. Definitely recommend this to anyone else going to Banff it was only a 10 minute drive from our hotel. They offer hot chocolate and hot apple cider before and after the ride and can warm up around the fire pit after the ride.it was so peaceful and relaxing. Definitely do it again if we ever go back to Banff. Definitely a 5 star

My daughter and I rode the Bow Valley Loop Ride 3hr on 7/31 and it was just the two of us and a great guide, Will. We had such a nice and lovely trip out in the fantastic nature and our nice horses Blue and Brewster made the trip golden. Will was super nice and told us about everything possible, so we can only rate superlatives and highly recommend this tour and Will.

I'm planning to go to Banff from Dec 13 to 17, 2020. I clicked on a Facebook ad and booked a sleigh ride for 40% off. I was conacted on Dec 10 that it was cancelled due to not having enough snow in Banff. Thr next available date is Dec 18 when I will no longer be in Banff... The company has refused my refund and will only give me credit. The problem is that I may never use it because I may not be back to Banff for years!! They just took my money and I have nothing to show for it. This is not tourist friendly.

Thank you for your comments and we understand your frustration. There is always a risk booking an activity on opening week when mother nature plays a huge part of the execution. We did receive snow but a large amount of rain also fell this week causing conditions to be not ideal for the sleighs.
The promotion applied was for 40% off the sleigh ride booked. The terms of this promotion is that it is non-refundable but can be used on another date with a large booking window of Dec -March. It is also fully transferable to another person if you wish as well.
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide a refund due to us being transparent about the bookings terms at the time of purchase. We understand that you may not be able to return to Banff but you chose to apply the promotion knowing it was non-refundable and only transferable to another date. Some customers opted to not apply the promotion for greater flexibility of refund in the event needed. Our refundable and non refundable options were both available at the time of booking so customers could choose which option they felt most comfortable with.
The amount paid is fully transferable to another Banff Trail riders activity but the 40% promotional discount would not apply to the new product. If you are still in town, we can also transfer the amount paid to a tour or activity offered by our sister company, Discover Banff Tours. Please contact us on 1-800-661-8352 if you would like to pursue this option.

Fantastic experience! Highly recommend to anyone wanting a different way to see the trails. Lovely, polite and upbeat staff. Very well behaved and well looked after horses. My partner is a beginner and I’m more experienced, but it was an equally great experience for both of us. We would happily ride here again!

Hello Amy,
Thank you for your fantastic review of our 3-hour Bow Valley Loop tour! We're thrilled to hear that you had a fantastic experience. We take pride in providing a different and unique way to explore the Banff area.
The welfare and safety of our horses is of utmost importance to us. All of our horses are rescues and we love them all deeply. It's wonderful to hear that both you and your partner, regardless of your differing levels of experience, had an equally great experience on the ride.
Thank you for choosing our tour and for sharing your positive experience. We look forward to the opportunity to ride with you again!

I see it says you’re not allowed to take a bag / backpack on the ride. Can we take a bottle of water?
Written 14 August 2023
Yes you can bring water. Bringing water is recommended. They provide small saddlebags for each rider, you can carry your water bottles in those bags.

Which ride is more scenic the Bow River Ride or the Spray River ride?
Written 18 July 2019
I went on the Bow River Ride and was disappointed because most of the ride was just through trees and maybe for 5-10 mins of it towards the end, we were walking along the Bow River and could see the mountains.

the 3 hour ride -sulphur mountain trail and windy knoll is the trail ok for some one who is scared of heights ( I don't like high heights )

I would suggest the Bow Valley Loop ride, you will have no problem with heights, the trail does not go close to any edges etc.

We are travelling and are looking for a ride for a highly experienced rider. Not a trail ride nose to tail with nothing more than a walking pace. Is there a ride for more experienced riders to test their abilities and get a good gallop in?
Written 31 December 2018
All our rides are at a walking pace. The same as all outfitters in the National Park.

The stables are located about a 20-25 minute walk from downtown Banff, or a 5-10 minute taxi ride. In the summer, one of the local bus routes also takes you near the stables.
