We took the long way from Paradise Valley which a nice hike surrounding you with many many mountains. The hike up to the pass itself is much more difficult, you need a bit more experience to go up the rocks and feel comfortable with some...More
This moderate hike is fabulous! After walking through the forest along some switchbacks with views of Lake Morraine peaking through, you enter a meadow lined with beautiful golden larches. The combination of the larches, snow capped mouintains and green pine trees was spectacular. Further along,...More
Absolutely gorgeous trail. The latches were amazing. It was busy, very busy for a midweek trip in late September, but I know why. The views you get are breathtaking. Trail is well maintained and easy to follow. There is some elevation gain, but not too...More
We started the Larch Valley and Sentinel Pass hike around 8am. The trail was reasonably empty going up but by the time we came down there were loads of people on the trail.
The start of the Larch Valley hike is a series of switchbacks,...More
We did this hike on Sept 16 and there was fresh snow on the ground. The larch trees haven’t exploded into yellow yet, but it was fun seeing the valley in snow. We usually hike this trail every September, and this was probably the earliest...More
Beautiful hike. We didnt go all the way to Sentinel Pass but turned back at the far end of the larch trees. There have been several days of snow and the path was very snowy, icy & slushy and therefore harder going than if dry...More
It's quite some hike to get up here. I think we had an elevation gain of 790 metres/2550 feet from the trailhead at the lake. But a really stunning hike. The last bit up to Sentinel Pass is a steep switchback, but doable if you're...More
The Larch trail starts at Moraine Lake and you spend about 90 minutes creeping uphill. You need to be in good shape, but I'm 58 and no Olympic athlete. The vistas showing the 10 peaks is well worth the journey. We stopped at the lake...More
A long trail across Larch Valley from a start point at Moraine Lake takes you to the base of a series of switch backs that lead you to the crest of the pass. Once there you are rewarded with sweeping views south towards the peaks...More
Hiked this trail in August with my wife and 2 boys (9 and 6). Totally worth it. As described elsewhere (blogs or AllTrails) the elevation climb, 2,383 f) over 7 miles can be daunting. But the elevation climb comes mostly in the beginning to Larch...More

We hiked Sentinel on July 17. It is recommended but not required that you hike in groups of 4 or larger. If you get to the trailhead early (6:15 a.m.), like we did, you might want to wait for another group to join. If you are starting after 8, I think you'll find enough people on the trail to feel safe, but do bring bear spray. The entire area around Moraine Lake is considered to be grizzly country!
