Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

With so many Calgarians still restricted due to travel limitations, economic hardship, or job loss, you'd think the City of Calgary would be stepping up to the plate and making the pathway system a safe and healthy place for people to use. Not the case in 99% of the system. Over the COVID period, I noticed a bit of effort downtown, but outside of the core, it's the Wild West with few people concerned about social distancing, especially because most know the City is either too afraid or just too lazy to enforce the rules. On a recent walk near the Glenmore Reservoir, more than 75% of groups walking along trails kept walking two abreast, hugging the yellow line, forcing those respecting other users to jump onto the snowbanks created by snow removal machines. There are ample places where there are dual pathways, with one track initially created for cyclists, the other for pedestrians, where the City could have created one-way walking loops, but the people being paid to plan these things have either been laid off or just don't care. It's a great system and should be a joy to use, so it's sad when a vehicle that could improve public health is neglected, thereby helping to spread disease and create disappointment and animosity amongst users.

I've read that Calgary has more urban parkland than any city in North America. We are so fortunate to have moved here and live near the Bow River and hundreds of kms of pathways. Just keep to the right when walking and keep your dog on a short leash and there are lots of cyclists and they move very fast. Good for walking all winter too as it is keep clear of snow and ice. This is a huge benefit of living in Calgary. Also very pretty in spots.

As the name suggests, there's a trail system for pedestrians and cyclists running along the Elbow River. A good initiative.
It’s always lovely to walk or cycle in green surroundings, and parts of this route wind through upscale areas like Rideau Park and Stanley Park. There are plenty of benches along the river where you can sit and admire the massive mansions across the water.
However, other less exciting parts of the route take you past high-rises and along sidewalks next to busy roads, which—at the time of writing—are even blocked off due to construction work.
Elbow River Pathway is essentially an out-and-back route, but we decided to leave the trail and take a completely different way back via the beautiful St. Mary’s Cathedral. That way, we covered our need for both nature and culture in one trip.

The river paths are lovely. However, they tend to get extremely crowded on weekends and we have encountered so many children improperly supervised by parents that it is no longer safe to bike along these paths.
Adult cyclists are no better - they do not follow the rules of the road and I have been driven into (and over) by these careless individuals.
We used to enjoy these paths, but rarely use them anymore due to these problems.

When we first moved here to Calgary a few decades ago I read in a brochure that we have 250 miles of bike path ~alone~! We have to have more than this now!! It's a big beautiful city. Well groomed and loved by all. You will not be disappointed.

This is a regular Sunday stroll for me. I start at The Simmons Building (public parking available) grab a coffee from Phil & Sebastian's, something gooey from Sidewalk Citizens Bakery and then head east over the bridge for a loop around St. Georges Island. Food trucks if there are events, picnic places and BBQs available too, watch kids playing on the beach, loop around back over the bridge. Then I head past the mass plantings of grasses, past Fort Calgary and then, off the pathway and onto street sidewalk of 9 AV Inglewood to window shop. Awesome Sunday AM!. If you are doing the walk later in the day, instead of coffee, head up to the patio on the 2nd floor of Charbar for sangria and a killer view (maybe save that for after the walk).
The plantings and landscape architecture of this walk are gorgeous.

If you visit Calgary and don't take a walk on the pathways you are missing the most interesting and beautiful part of Calgary. The pathway takes you through historic sites, beautiful city architecture, past old rail lines and former rail stations, and of course - by the river. It's beautiful all year round and it's what most Calgarians love most about the city so you get to experience what we love the most!

Love our city pathways. Especially the Glenmore Reservoire path, it goes around the entire reservoir.
A great outing if you are visiting our city. You can just walk the trail at the end of 37th ave SW and see the wonderful mountain views or you can go into the valley and all the way around...16K.

Is there a good guide to the walks and trials along the Bow?
Written 18 August 2019
Yes, you can get them from the Info booth at airport or from City of CALGARY website.

I would like to know the pathway system that could be used for a walkathon (5 or 10 kilometers) and then end at the Calgary Zoo.

Events like this are handled only through the City and their permitting system. Best to call 3-1-1 (403-268-2489) for advice on who to contact and hows it's done. Once there's an impact on public access, the Parks Department gets involved to make sure things are done properly and safely...
