Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It's great to get around and walk but too many Homeless and don't stay at night it gets Dodgy some of the time. Could be Cleaner but all and all it's good. On weekends there are way too many Protests & Counter Protests that can be unsettling. It's Advised to have a buddy system And NOT to bring your Wee ones with you. I'd recommend going on a Tuesday or Thursday its pretty low-key during work hours.

For a couple of weeks, Calgary celebrates winter in mid-February by hosting some beautiful festivals, Calgary Glow and Chinook Blast. The Stephen Avenue Walk and other locations are bedecked with installations that exude light and fun. Check the web sites for details. One of the locations they have transformed is City Hall with a laser light show set to fantastic music. Bravo to the organizers!

It was a long haul, but on my recent trip downtown, I noticed they finally removed hoarding around the old city hall and I checked it out. I have lived in Calgary for decades, and it has always been a part of my life, so I wanted to see what they did to it. The exterior sandstone had been in bad shape, and I understand it was quite a job to restore it. Sadly they didn't use local stone in order to save pennies, but the colour match is very poor at best, awful in places. While the building looks "clean," I have to say it looks like it lost a lot of its soul, and leaves me a little flat. Maybe with time, it might regain some character. Compare the main file image on Tripadvisor with one I took of the same facade and you will see. Aside from that, for a long time, with the Municipal Complex closed on weekends, City Hall was being less and less to be a "people's place." Now with COVID, it feels more like a bunker, as inaccessible, perhaps even less so, than any of the downtown skyscrapers. Sad.

Old City Hall has been enshrouded in scaffolding and a scrim for a number of years now - restoring sandstone is a tedious task, I guess. But the shroud is now gone, and the exterior looks amazing! I don't know what's happening inside, but if the quality of work seen on the outside extends to the inside, it should be absolutely fabulous!

I was on my way to Inglewood, having gotten off at the City Hall LRT station and went through the westerly entrance, in the old sandstone City Hall. I was impressed with the interesting historical displays they have there. The main floor of the Municipal Building, the new part, is not well lit and generally quite drab, compared to the Edmonton City Hall. But they did have some interesting stuff there too, e.g. a Lego model of the old City Hall, see photos. Sadly, it's not a "People's Place" and is closed at 6 pm and on weekends.

Sadly, the gorgeous sandstone "Old City Hall" is still behind a shroud being still under repair. So that leaves the Calgary Municipal Building. Architecturally, the exterior is very nice, and the shiny glass exterior promises a bright interior, but the builders didn't deliver that, it's pretty gloomy in there. But, they often use all the space for public exhibitions, and on my last visit, they had very fun children's art there. The kids must have been thrilled. They don't always have something on display, so for visitors, I'd say make sure there's something of interest for you there - much more interesting places to invest your time otherwise. I did like the innards of their old clock that will be on display until they finish (if they ever do) the sandstone rehab... Regardless, sad they pull up the drawbridge and bolt the doors on weekends...

Calgary is diverse through and through. Our Mayor is muslim, but still he and Jewish community joyously come together each year to light the menorah on the first day of Hanukkah at City Hall. There are a lot of Christmas trees, etc too, but I find the Hanukkah ceremony very touching...

Eh not much to see in the actual building. The grounds are quite nice, parking can be a beating like most of Calgary. Extremely small spots built for compact cars yet the city brags of being a cowboy town.
Usually some type of festival going on around the grounds.

I was was heading through the City Hall Complex recently. Old City Hall will be under renovation for a long time, likely to reopen in 2020, according to the news. But the Municipal Building is open, but still a bit dark. Nice to see something different there for Stampede, a life-sized horse (not a live one, though) and wagon.

The building is very beautiful from the outside, but pretty grim inside. The Atrium does go up 12 floors and is impressive, but somehow just doesn't bring much light in. But to compensate, they to do animate the atrium frequently, and on my last visit, they were participating in the nearby theatre festival (the High Performance Rodeo) by hosting an interactive event. They hadn't started yet, but for people young and old interested in performance or theatre, this might be a great stop while it's here. Just south of the Atrium, before you get to the parkade, is a great Good Earth coffee shop.
