Great hiking

We have walked around Newcastle Island several times and each time we see something new.If you are really lucky you get to see the champagne coloured raccoons.

My husband and I got married on the beach and I've always loved this island. It's very special. At night you can see so many eyes from raccoons and deer!

Love this little island. You can camp...pinic....or just play at the beach. Many seabirds like herons and cranes to be seen. Also a trail that you can take around the outside of the island...about 6 kms or so. Not really hard but well worth it.

You catch the ferry from Maffeo Sutton Park (passengers, bicycles and dogs) which takes only a few minutes. There is nothing commercial on the island aside from a sometimes-open snack counter in the main building. The island has many paths that lead, one way or the other, around and across the island. The signs directing walkers are a bit ambiguous... More

Newcastle Island is an amazing treasure a few hundred meters from downtown Nanaimo. The island ferry is fun, and the park is quite undeveloped. Quiet, forested, just a beautiful place.

Newcastle Island provincial park is an island in Nanaimo harbor on Vancouver Island. It is approximately 2 Kms long by 1.5 Kms wide. It can be reached by a 15 minute ferry ride. There are trails that follow the shoreline offering excellent views of Nanaimo, the Straight of Georgia and the Coast Maintain range on the mainland. Allow approximately 2.5... More

Took the ten-minute water-taxi ride to the island and walked the perimeter trail. Nice, relatively easy hike with lots of places to stop and contemplate the views. The only quibble is that there are some points of interest, e.g. a mine and a quarry, that don't have any kind of interpretive information associated with them. Given the number of people... More

After a short boat ride to the island you enter an enchanted place. We travel once the kids have all gone back to school so most places are quiet. The Island is tranquil and beautiful, with magical woodlands and beautiful shores. The trees are decorated with moss and lichen as are the rocks and everywhere you look is beauty. A... More

We stayed first on the last leg of our 10 day kayaking trip and we used the group shelter as rain was threatening. The Park Operator, after checking with his boss, let us stay for $18 dollars for the night. The showers were welcome, clean and warm. Do use the animal caches as the racoons are very cheeky at night... More

This island is a gem as it is virtually in downtown Nanaimo. Reached by a short water taxi (fee) the island offers plenty of day and overnight camping facilities. Hiking trails are numerous and circumnavigate the island and are best enjoyed on an ebb tide. Most of the hiking is in the trees providing plenty of shade with great views... More
