Beaches close to downtown

This is a lovely beach—a strip of parkland next to wild nature, right in the city. A great place to begin an excursion into Stanley Park and the seawall walk.

It's such a wonderful place on a summers evening. Folk just gather there, sitting on seats, logs, grass or sand. Some produce musical instruments, other's dance, most just sit and chat. And the sunsets are spell binding.

I'd be happy to live in this area and just walk along the beach every morning. Beautiful scenery, especially when the sun is setting. Area is surrounded with restaurants too. I never imagined that there would be a beach in the middle of the city.

Paved pathways line the edge of English Bay with the shoreline down below. There is a bike path and at least two places where you can easily rent a bike. As you get close to Stanley Park, the beach area disappears but until that time there is lots of sandy beach to play and chunks of large driftwood to sit... More

This is amazing! In a busy city a lovely unspoilt place to stroll, play, picnic, walk the dog what ever, against a picturesq backdrop of the forested hillside of Stanley Park and distant misty mountains. On the horizon ships wait to load/unload yet the water and beach are not polluted. Dotted along the foreshore upmarket bars and a restaurant offer pleasant... More

It's a nice area to scroll along depending on the weather. If course you can go swimming in the summer, or walk around during other times. Excellent for runners and cyclists, and very pretty friendly.

We spent a lot of time near English Bay on our 2001 trip when we stayed at the Sylvia Hotel. The view and proximity to Stanley Park made it a great area to spend time. Once again we found ourselves by English Bay and enjoyed seeing the beach, sculptures, ships anchored offshore and other people enjoying rare November sunshine. I... More

We followed on from our walk round Stanly Park and were surprised just how accessible it is from the city. It gives you a real sense of the geography of the coast and how Vancouver is out on a bit of a peninsular.Surrounded by sky scrapers and focused on building you forget how close the water is and how special... Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
A hodgepodge of landscapes, the West End combines verdant gardens and blocky modern architecture, with Victorian bits and Edwardian bobs in between. It is a paradise for takeout food, take-away coffee, and perhaps incongruously, some of Vancouver's most languid lines of beachfront. English Bay and Sunset Beach invite swimmers, strollers, and picnic-lovers to take in dusk settling over the water, or to jog along with the sunrise, offering breathtaking views at any time of day. The West End merges together so many looks and flavors probably because it functions a hub: its the leafy pit-stop between nightlife and entertainment venues along Davie Street, and the shopping paradise that is Robson Street, offering visitors beautiful parkland to rest on, and quick, easy food to re-fuel with in between ventures.
