Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

One recent rainy day, we spent several hours at the Gallery. It is fairly small, but there were several exhibitions, the highlight being one featuring works by Emily Carr in the museum's collection and reflections on her output by modern observers and her contemporaries. Well worth a visit.

Issued the Emily Carr exhibits and what we got to experience was very small and not what we have had the opportunity to see at other art galleries in various cities we have visited. My wife is an artist and she was also disappointed except for a handful of pieces. Maybe our timing was just off, but a two star is all I can muster.

The gallery is relatively small but the day I visited it was open house and free entry. It is build on the historical house and has a contemporary design to it. The exhibition is carefully designed and layout. The staffs were very friendly and knowledgeable. It gives a nice welcoming feeling and the location is great accessible by foot or car. Limited parking spaces but it want that busy.

My review is somewhere between 3 and 4. The art gallery is small but well laid out and the exhibits we saw were interesting.. I felt the garden at the back has almost become an afterthought and need a a little work.
Be aware there is no cafe here so have a drink down Fort Road or elsewhere before coming. If you walk, as we did, and want a glass of water on arrival you will be out of luck. There are plenty of eateries about 10 min walk on Fort Road.

Hidden Gem is overused but not in this case. I am a resident of Victoria & I am so happy we have this Gallery. There is a permanence to the building that sprung from a classic old house. The collection is considerable in depth and breadth. Today I was inspired by a beautiful curation of the history of the Nude in painting, collage, fibre art and sculpture. Parking & a fine gift shop. This place is a foundation stone for its community.

The AGGV is not large, but it usually has at least one or two fine exhibitions. Star of the shows this time is the "In the Flesh" exhibition, featuring a wide array of sources. The smaller exhibitions are less interesting but still worthwhile.

What a great discovery, this art gallery has a fantastic collection of very cool Asian art pieces. Some of the art I saw when I was there knock my socks off - the cloisonné enamel incense burner was the best I have seen anywhere. They also have an on-going exhibit of the local art hero Emily Carr and other exhibitions of contemporary art and local Coast Salish artists. Great gift shop. It’s located in a cute neighbourhood and is surrounded by trees with a relaxing Asian garden. Worth the trip to Victoria.

A most enjoyable walk through several exhibits of different artists and finish with short walk thru of old original preserved home of the patron who donated it.

This gallery, while quite small, always seems to have interesting exhibitions. A highlight is their fine collection of works by Emily Carr, at least some of which are usually on display. There are always at least a couple of temporary exhibitions at any given visit.

When I visit places, and especially smaller cities and towns, I like going to small, local museums. They can be idiosyncratic, fascinating, puzzling, and a nice window into the culture and thinking of a place. The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, which I only discovered this time around (probably between my 5th and 10th visit to Victoria), gave me a nice perspective on art in Victoria and how that reflects the city's culture and history.

Right now there are several good exhibits. One, by Karen Tam, is called With Wings Like Clouds Hung From The Sky, and conjectures about the life and art of a historical figure--Lee Tam--about whom little is known expect that he knew and may have collaborated with Emily Carr. This exhibit, by Karen Tam of Montreal, recreates what Lee Tam's studio may have been like and pulls together eclectic works by Asian artists that give some ideas of what Lee Tam might have done.

Another exhibit, Close to Home, is a fun exercise in playing curator. The current curator took different pieces from the AGGV's collection and has arranged them in juxtaposition based on his thoughts about common threads, themes and elements. The invitation is both to enjoy the pieces for themselves and also to be open to serendipitous associations and insights. I went to a similar kind of retrospective at the Frye Art Museum and there's something intriguing to see elements of an institution's collection all together.

There are also rooms devoted to Emily Carr's paintings, to images from the early Victoria photo studio of Hayashi, Kitamura and Matsubuchi, and also an outside courtyard with a Shinto Shrine. It's a few kilometers outside of the city center, but well worth the trip.
