Took an AST1 course with instructor Eric V. and learned so much! Eric was patient informative and excited to teach even the smallest things. great balance of hands on and info..Class size could have been smaller 12 -1 guide in class 5/6 - 2 guides, but overall an awesome course with great people. The advertised experience level of intermediate in resort blue runs for this course is misleading, YOU DEFINITELY NEED TO BE A COMPETENT OFF PISTE SKIER!

Eric and his team do an amazing job at informing you about everything you need to know when you want to start heading into the backcountry. Eric brings a massive amount of knowledge to the table and really explains things into detail. I thoroughly enjoyed the course both inside as well as outside the classroom. I can most definitely recommend... More

This course is a must for anyone wanting to go back country or out of bounds and minimise their risk of being caught by avalanche. Also a through introduction to companion rescue where the time is critical to find them. The classroom day flew by and the time on the snow most interesting. A reasonable level of skill on snow... My partner and I were looking for an AST 1 and we found one that worked with our days off through MSAA. It was great because my partner is a splitboarder and the guide was one as well. We had equal amounts of splitboarders and skiiers so we were in separate groups and it was great to be taught by... More

I had such a great experience with the AST 1 course in Whistler BC . Sara our instructor was knowledgeable and a thorough teacher introducing our group to backcountry mountain safety. I highly recommend Mountain Skills Academy. I will definitely be taking more course from MSA when I am ready to go to the next level.

The course was fun, well laid out, and the technical aspects were explained clearly (even I could follow)! The day out into the snow taught companion rescue, basics of back country route planning and practically how to use skins etc. enjoyed a good beer at the end of the day.

I took the AST 1 course this weekend with Mountain Skills Academy and it met and exceeded all my expectations! Day one was a classroom session and the 8 hrs went by quite quick with the instructors mixing up slideshows, videos and smaller group assignments. Day 2 we meet at the lifts, got divided into smaller groups and then headed... More
