About
Built between 1800 and 1812 under the patronage of Prince Edward Duke of Kent, and then seeing major modifications through the 1820's and early 1900's before being carefully restored after a catastrophic fire in 1994, Saint George's Round Church remains the oldest round church in North America and an excellent example of Palladian architecture. Prospective visitors are encouraged to contact the Parish Office to arrange their visit.

Saint George's, one of the oldest churches in Halifax and very distinctive because of its round shape, was extensively damaged by a fire in June 1994. It was rebuilt at considerable expense and is as beautiful as ever. A young guide was present to assist visitors when we were there. Across the street is the original German church that dates from 1756.

This Church is breath taking!! We poked our noses in the church and were taken back at the beauty. The pipe organ is majestic! So glad we stopped here.

Thankfully the door was open when we arrived and the sexton welcomed us. He was our tour guide, a knowledgeable young man who knew both history and theology who took us around, including climbing up to the bell tower. He even let me ring the bell! In addition, the same guide had the keys to the Little Dutch Church so we walked along together (a couple of blocks north) and visited this other little church built in the middle of the 18th century. An afternoon in Halifax well spent. Thank you

It is almost inconceivable that this will be only the fourth review of this awe-inspiring building. Rebuilt almost from the ground up after a devastating fire in 1994, this quiet, human-scaled space is filled with splendours of architectural and aesthetic design. To worship here is to enter into a world of tradition and history with incense a-plenty and BCP Holy Mysteries intact. Such a shame that the choral tradition does not extend to the summer months; perhaps some feelers could be sent out to potential visiting choirs from overseas?

The congregation of the Round Church was founded at the much smaller Little Dutch (Deutsch) Church, located just a few blocks north at the corner of Brunswick and Gerrish Streets. The Little Dutch Church was founded by German Lutherans who had settled in Halifax by special command by Edward Cornwallis. These "foreign Protestants”, who were among the founding members of Halifax, started construction on the Little Dutch Church in 1756. It can still be visited and is open during Morning Prayer (9am) and Evening Prayer (5:30pm) between May and October.
The congregation, with the support of the British government, embarked on the construction of a second St. George’s in 1800. Its circular Palladian design, like that of Halifax’s Town Clock, was a product of the architectural taste of Edward, Duke of Kent, commander of the forces in Nova Scotia and son of George III, who played an active role in the planning of the new building.
More recently the church has attracted increasing numbers of persons from all parts of the Halifax Regional Municipality drawn by its emphasis upon traditional Anglican liturgy and music centred upon the Book of Common Prayer.
During the summer months there are guided tours available.

This is one of the older churches in Halifax and one of the more interesting designs. Unfortunately it wasn't possible to go inside when I visited, but the view from outside was still good.

An old church that is notable for its round shape. The interior is unique, again due to the round shape. Go inside and explore. Part of the old city.

This church is beautiful from the outside. Wish it were open when we were there. The pictures look beautiful. We did take many pictures of the outside as you don't often see a round church. It was interesting to read of the fire and to see how far they have come since then. I would like to go back some day to see the inside too.
