Sadly the Canadian section was closed, but I loved the Inuit art section. There's also a limited but varied selection of European paintings from the renaissance to the 20th century.

Look forward to the reopening of the Canadian collections in May 2017. This gallery is a must see in Ottawa.

We visited in October and were very disappointed. The Canadian section was completely closed and only the Contemporary, European and First Nations sections were open. I did not appreciate the Contemporary section. I just don't see how a snow shovel propped up in a corner is art. Maybe it's just me though. We thought the best part of the gallery... More

We spent hours here, especially to see the Alex Janvier (First Nation) exhibit, which was delightful and thought provoking. We wandered to some of the other spaces within the museum to see other, older artists--Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Impressionists. We looked down on the indoor green garden and out the huge glass walls to views of spectacular Ottawa and its Gothic-style... More

They have a surprisingly good collection of old European paintings, arranged in chronological order rather than theme. Great architecture with dramatic natural light in the common areas. The viewing rooms are spacious and it was not crowded so there was plenty of opportunity to really view and think about each painting.

I was out walking and more or less got funneled there by the ubiquitous construction and detours. THANKFULLY! I love photography and was lucky enough to immerse myself in the work of Josef Sudek, with an extensive collection displayed and a very interesting short film as well. The only down side was the Canadian section was closed for renovations (but... More

There is usually a lot to see and the building itself is quite remarkable. The cafeteria is a nice place to visit even in colder weather especially on sunny days. Unfortunately, the Canadian section of the gallery is closed until May 2017 and this is probably one of the most significant parts of the gallery's permanent collection; very disappointing. The... Lots and lots of amazing art and the building is amazing too. Parking was hard, but well worth the price.

This was going to be the highlight of the trip, and just before we paid we discovered that the Canadian collection is closed until spring. Some might not have a problem with this but there is no obvious information available anywhere that lets the public know this.
