The Gallery is preparing for the 150th anniversary of Confederation this summer. We were not told by the gentleman who sold us our tickets that much of the collection is unavailable for viewing until the Spring. (I do not know whether this gentleman disliked that we were English speaking or a male couple, but he was surly and ignored my... More

This was a bit of a bust for us. The Main Canadian Gallery was closed for renovations, so the only things to see were the Alex Janvier exhibit and a bunch of very abstract art. Maybe for a hard core art lover it would have been interesting, but as a National Gallery it didn't have much to show that was... More

The National Gallery is one of the "must see" attractions in Ottawa. The building itself is a very nice to place to visit. Cafeteria and the Grand Hall has a stunning view of the parliament hill and the Ottawa river, especially during the sunset hours. You can also see some special exhibitions year long. We were lucky to see the... More

The Janvier exhibit was stunning! We were really happy to get to see this exhibit and bought several card prints of his works at very reasonable prices at the gift shop after our tour.

I do visit these places and I enjoy traditional art and paintings, but do have a problem with avant garde art. Some of the exhibits are great, but you feel that others are making fun of you, exhibiting what I call rubbnish. There is an interesting exhibition of indian arts.

As members of the NG, we are often invited to openings. Recently, we attended the opening of Alex Janvier's exhibit. His opening speech was heartwarming. The exhibit itself is huge, so it will require more than one visit. Of particular interest to us was his painting 'Blood Tears', which he completed on his 66th birthday; and on the back, he... More

The National Gallery has to be on the top five attractions if you are a visitor to Ottawa. For locals, it is a place to go to, again and again. Special exhibitions, often of "blockbuster" quality, can provide a reason to attend. But don't forget the permanent collection there. Small room after small room offer a perfect setting for the... Excellent museum centrally located close to Byward and the Parliament hill. The Alex Janvier exhibition is excellent and tells a fascinating history of modern day Canada.

Wherever I go, I look for the works of great masters of the past, and I was very pleased to see that the National Gallery of Ottawa has a good collection of paintings from Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic and Modern Art (including Impressionism and Russian avant-garde). There are many good examples of Italian, French, British, Dutch, and German and Russian schools.

Great place to visit if your looking for a quit activity with amazing art work. I was able to bring my sketch book and sketch without being bothered.
