Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Always lush in the summer and well-kept in the winter, a beautiful place to gather surrounded by the Chateau Laurier, the Peace Tower, the National Art Gallery, the Basilica. People are walking or reading, picnics, playing games, walking the dog.

Originally called “Colonel’s Hill,” after Colonel John By, Major’s Hill Park has been an important hub and recreational site for the city since 1826, when construction of the Rideau Canal commenced. After By was recalled to England, in 1832, to answer for cost over-runs incurred building Rideau Canal, he was replaced by Captain Daniel Bolton. Bolton, also a member of the Royal Engineers, was subsequently promoted to “Major” in 1838. By the time Bolton left Bytown (Ottawa) in 1843, “Colonel’s Hill” had become known as “Major’s Hill” and the name stuck. Thus, when the space was formally established as a park, in 1875, it was christened “Major’s Hill Park.”

In the current day, Major’s Hill Park functions as one of Ottawa’s primary outdoor venues. The annual Canada Day celebrations, for example, have become quite iconic. Ditto the annual tulip bloom, which we were lucky to partake in. The bright bursts of colour – yellow, red, purple, and pink – offered a lovely contrast to the well-manicured lawns of the park. Add to this the lovely views you get of Parliament (west), Chateau Laurier (south), National Gallery (north), and Rideau Canal and, well, you have a “must visit” location in our Nation’s Capital!

Beyond the physical beauty and sense of calm this space can bring, it’s also pretty rife with important history. The park’s proximity to the Rideau Canal and Ottawa River make clear why John By and, later, Daniel Bolton resided here during the city’s early development (in fact, remnants of the home they lived in can still be seen in the park). Much the same can be said with respect to the park’s closeness to our house of government – Parliament Hill – and the nearby Chateau. The blog “Ottawa is not boring” is, therefore, quite right to declare Major’s Hill Park the city’s “loveliest park.” It beautifully combines nature, history and culture into a coherent gestalt for all to enjoy.

That said, I do confess surprise at seeing not a single review has been penned in the last year. It’s doubly shocking given that Major’s Hill Park is currently the #3 thing “to do” on TripAdvisor. Hmmm . . . maybe I should start writing elsewhere? It really does make one think. I mean, it’s not unusual to see low review numbers for a piece of public art, for example, but something in the “top 10” in Ottawa? What’s going on!?

The park is lovely and spacious on the sunny days but at the northern tip are the best free washrooms in Ottawa. Great views from the park

We went at end of tulip festival and the flowers were still all in bloom. The lilacs were in bloom. The grass is very green and great to see people enjoying the space. Views of Gatineau and behind the parliament were gorgeous.
