Description:

Located on the corner of Grafton Street and University Avenue. The Mack is...

Located on the corner of Grafton Street and University Avenue. The Mack is part of four magnificent theatres in downtown Charlottetown operated by Confedertation Centre of the Arts. The box office for The Mack is located inside the Confederation Centre of the Arts. Playing this summer is Spoon River from July 6 till August 20th. In 2015, Spoon River (produced by Soulpepper Theatre in Toronto) won Canada's prestigious Dora Award for Outstanding New Musical. For the first time Spoon River makes its first appearance outside Toronto as part of the Charlottetown Festival line up at Confederation Centre. The musical is based on the classic Spoon River Anthology, written 100 years ago by Edgar Lee Masters. In this rendition, poems of the dead are brought to life and set to music by PEI's own Mike Ross. Albert Schultz directs the 11-member cast, as they raise their voices in song, telling of loves, losses, and hard-earned truths. The Charlottetown Festival produced this mystical, dream-like musical in association with Soulpepper Theatre.

Wasn't sure what to expect. Was good if you like hearing stories from those that died. Music was pretty good. Heard from many that they did not like it at all and would not recommend. I didn't mind it but for $45 I think there has and is better value for better stories! The venue used to be very good... More

Loved this theater, small, intimate, just right to hear and see everything. No bad seats. Nice surprise to see such a professional play/musical. Truly excellent acting, singing and playing instruments! Ran into into one of the actors the next morning walking the streets of Charlottetown, he couldn't have been more friendly! I understand this play is going to New York!... More

The Mack isn't the huge Confederation theater, but it's smaller, and the experience with the actors seems more intimate. I was so impressed with their production of "Spoon River," a book which I have been teaching for twenty years with my students. The actors were uniformly wonderful, and for a small stage, they made it really come alive. The songs... More

Let me start off this review by stating that generally I'm not fond of musicals, but I thought I would give spoon River it a try. It's multiple short stories about all the people who passes away in a grave yard. I found it disjointing and not engaging you didn't get emotionally vested in any of the characters as there... More

On a recent trip to PEI, I found myself in Charlottetown, wandering the streets trying to entertain myself until my husband finished work for the day. I stopped outside the Confederation Centre to sit awhile and listen to a group playing a few songs to the small crowd. I sat next to a lovely woman, who told me about a... More

A fantastic evening at the theatre - the audience jumped to their feet at the end. Loved it. Stick around for the aftershow mini-concert with cast members at the bar!

"Is your soul alive? Then let it feed," is part of a song in Spoon River, playing at the Mack all summer (2016). It's a magical show that will have you laughing and crying and feeling alive. Fantastic cast and fabulous music in an intimate space. I highly recommend it for a great night out.

Without giving away the surprises, this was an excellent play. The premise which is based on poems written about the dead in a graveyard, doesn't sound like much but it was excellent. Great stories, music, singing. We thoroughly enjoyed watching these very talented actors and musicians. If you have the opportunity, this is a must.
