- md1mmSheffield, United Kingdom1,628 contributionsBeautiful and peacefulThis is a large beautiful cathedral in central Montreal, nextdoor to the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Whatever is happening outside with the noise and cold of modern Montreal in November, is forgotten when you enter and appreciate the art, beauty and scale of this place. Even as a non-religious person I found this place to be quite extraordinary and definitely worth a visit.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 16 November 2023

Mass was conducted only in French but we were still able to follow along. The hymns and the organ sounded amazing with so much more depth in this huge cathedral versus our hometown. I would definitely want to attend mass here on a regular basis. After mass, we had the opportunity to explore and were impressed with the overall size of the entire cathedral, built after St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, but even at this size it was just the 3rd largest in Quebec.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 April 2024

The sculptures on the front of the cathedral are very impressive. Very calm place to walk round especially when the choir was in singing.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 May 2024

There are beautiful paintings of Montréal's Catholic history in the aisles, and music during mass was terrific. Of the four basilicas in Montréal, this was my favorite, and it's well worth a visit.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 16 July 2024

Look longer at a stunning neo-baroque ciborium is located under the dome. Chapel of the Assumption is known also as the Marriage Chapel. I was surprised with the paintings which are not painted with biblical themes but depicting historical events in the early days of Montreal called Ville-Marie at the time. The bishop's Mgr. Ignace Bourget, second bishop of Montreal, mortuary chapel is behind the door - it is the person who ordered building of the cathedral after previous was burned out. If you are in the city don't miss this gem.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 July 2024

There was an exposition of Blessed Sacrament when I walked in at 10:30am on a Monday. It was peaceful and a quiet place to pray/meditate.
It is a beautiful Cathedral, right across from Fairmont Queen Elizabeth.
There is also a religious store at the corner from the main lobby. It has a lot of great statues and crosses that I dont typically find in other catholic stores.
It is welcoming, even if you are not a Catholic --- a recommended place to sit quietly and reflect.

Built in the 19th century, this cathedral was modeled after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
Such a wonderful structure. It certainly does not feel like it is in North America.
Admission is free and there is a small gift shop near the entrance.
There is certainly an old world feel to the cathedral.
A must see when in Montreal.

You can't miss this cathedral from the outside when driving on boul. Rene Levesque. Beautiful exterior with several unique statues.
Pros:
The exterior is simply....Wow!
Free to enter; taking photos allowed throughout the cathedral
Close to other scenic areas in Montreal; easy to get there by foot
Nice large interior with paintings depicting scenarios tied with Quebec's Catholic history (e.g. Marguerite Bourgeoys)
Really liked the cupola and altarpiece
Cons:
If visiting as tourist, I would still rate St. Joseph's oratory and Basilica Notre Dame higher than this one. Try to pass by at least once from the outside.

This impressive building is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Montreal. It is the third largest church in Quebec and architecturally is both impressive both from the outside and the inside. Some of the highlights are the bishop's mortuary chapel, Chapel of the Assumption and the amazing neo-baroque ciborium is located under the dome of the building. On the exterior, the magnificent statues along the roof are the most striking part of the structure. Whereas, at St. Peter’s the statues on the facade are of the twelve apostles, at Cathédrale Marie-Reine-du-Monde there are thirteen statues that represent the patron saints of the parishes which form the diocese of Montreal. The cathedral’s green copper dome is easy to see from various parts of town and is impressive in itself. This Cathedral will make you feel as if you are in an old basilica in Europe.

Beautiful cathedral. No admission fee. Definitely worth a visit. The first time we stopped by, a wedding was taking place, and we were turned away. When we came back, we caught the last minute of a mass and enjoyed the organ postlude.

Have visited since I was a child, and am still impressed. In the heart of a bustling city, stop in for a few moments of peace and quiet. The architecture is wonderful, the grounds are well kept.
Take a few minutes and walk around the outside of the cathedral: understand just how well constructed it is.
A favourite for this Canadian.
