A major Canadian institution dedicated exclusively to contemporary art, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (MAC) is located in the heart of the Quartier des spectacles and at the site of Place des Arts. It lies in the centre of a unique cultural complex in Canada, combining both the performing and visual arts. Founded in 1964, the MAC is the first institution in Canada devoted exclusively to contemporary art. The Museum offers a varied program, including the presentation of its permanent collection and temporary exhibitions of works by artists from Québec, Canada, and abroad.

Very disappointed with this. If you are going to an art museum go to the Museum of Fine Art that is amazing. This was a waste of time!

Montreal's contemporary art museum takes only about an hour to see (more or less depending on how long you linger) but what it lacks in size it makes up for in interesting and thoughtful pieces. I've been in many art museums and this had one...More

My wife and I wandered in to see the free exhibit during Jazz Fest earlier this week. We liked what little we could see and would probably pay full admission to see the rest of this museum the next time we are in Montreal.

I like some contemporary art, especially thoughtful pieces. I'm open to all media, including video, sound, flat, multi dimensional, etc. I found the art at this museum to be pretentious, inept, and depressing. There was little to admire in terms of work or thought. Definitely...More

It is worth saying upfront that this museum isn't for everyone, even for some who like contemporary art. It is a modest-sized museum with a limited exhibition space, and that might not appeal to some. BUT, we found the museum to be well-curated, very interesting...More

This museum is probably the most interesting one I visited while in Montreal. The artworks were very intesting

What I look for is roominess, variety, risk, places to sit and ponder, varied forms and local influence. This museum had them all. We were given a reduced tariff because it was not all open.

The Musee is under construction, but the permanent exhibition is a worthwhile diversion while in Montreal. There are different mediums used by a variety of artists that evoke a wide range of emotions. I urge you to seek out this fine museum and support others...More

When in a new city, I always visit the modern art museum(s). There were a couple exhibit halls closed the day we went, but still much to see. The Teresa Margolles exhibit was intense but wonderful and was very well curated. The other exhibits displayed...More

This gallery had very little art exhibited. The children's sections on the lower ground floor were the best (sadly) on offer.

We were there for an hour and that was enough to get a good sense of all the rooms. However, if you want to listen to all the videos and read all the texts, you will need more time.
