Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This building is where the Montreal Government seats. It is five stories high and was built over a period of six years: 1872-1878. It is located in Old Montreal and is accessible through the orange metro line; Champ de Mars. At this moment the building is under a big renovation so it’s closed for about three years. You can come around the gardens at night around 9pm and here the story of Montreal on an illuminated wall with lights and sound.

If you try to park in downtown Montreal and you see a blue post with numbers on it, you need to look around and find a EZ paybox, either on the same street or across the street. You will need to deposit your parking money and enter the number off the blue pole where you have parked. If you don't do this, it could cost you $52.

There are no signs advising where to deposit your money.

Definitely worth taking the tour or at least stopping by, especially since it's free. The view from the terrace looking into downtown is great if you go on the tour. If you don't take the tour at least stop in and check out the beautiful council chambers.

Worth visiting, and somewhere I've revisited many times over the years. This is not a large basilica but has interesting history. Stunningly beautiful, it left me totally speechless.

We spent a day of touring old Montreal and had lunch and dinner there. It’s an interesting place and quite lovely, but I thought it would be bigger. It has a Riverwalk of the sort’s near the marina which is a long pedestrian walkway.
Also, there is a Chinatown which is about one square block in size and has many restaurants and souvenir shops. We were not able to go in to Notre Dame cathedral because it closed early that day. Old Montreal is a nice place to visit, but I probably would not take the time to go back there again unless I was going to be in that area for some reason. I would recommend that you take some time and visit there.

Did you know that you can walk into City Hall and they will give you a free tour of the building? There were a handful of tours the day we went, with the schedules clearly visible when you walk in. Tours are both in French or English, so check the schedule for the language you need.

The tour covers the striking architecture of the building (those stained glass windows!) as well as the city council chambers, notable mayors, and a brief political history of Montreal. Our tour guide was amazing and genuine, and had some interesting stories about various mayors and events. This was an unexpected gem!

A truly beautiful, almost iconic building - quite rightly currently used as the City Hall. Massively characterful edifice suitably imposing in the very centre of the heart of Montreal and in the similarly historic and characterful Old Town - which itself is similarly impressive.

Also a feature are the relatively small gardens that border it with a good deal of effort having gone into featuring a topical element in the form of a floral tribute.

Do take the time to have a look - it is free after all.

We went to Montreal's City Hall to commemorate Montreal's 375th year of inauguration. The walls where made of marble and so was the ceiling. All of the decorations where made of bronze and covered with golden leaves, they where absolutely amazing. Although we would have liked to see the mayor, he was not there. We would definitely go back during the summer.

Though we didn't tour it, we walked by it every day and marveled at the grounds and the lighting at night.

This is a beautiful structure facing Place Jacques Cartier. It is attractively illuminated at night. On weekday afternoons during the summer, they offer a free guided English tour. This was one of the best public building tours we have ever taken, rich in history including the DeGaulle speech from the building's balcony, interesting background on local governance in diverse Montreal and a visit to the legislative chamber which rivals those of many state and provincial governments in size.
