Mile End

About
Mile-End is a quaint yet contemporary quarter teaming with multiculturalism and filled with cafés, bars, restaurants, specialty grocery shops, boutiques, galleries, hot yoga spots, great bakeries and Montreal-style bagels served fresh and hot. Many of its residents are eco-friendly and artistic -- in summer, it is not unusual to see guitarists strumming a tune.

Top ways to experience Mile End
The area
Neighbourhood: Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colourful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.

The Plateau neighborhood consists of houses with two floors, the stairs of the second floor are always exterior and with a lot of slope. The neighborhood has trees and plants. These houses are inspiration for local artisan artists. It is a neighborhood in some areas inhabited by alternative people

Wonderful area of Old Montreal some of the more well known restaurants and bagel shops located here. Must place to visit especially on foot to truly get a feel for the local vibe.

Belongs to the three things I would recommend in montreal: 1) Ville vieux, 2) Mont royal and 3) mile end.
This is an authentic area with a lot of Bars, Cafés and restaurants as well as shops where you can find also locals. It's one of the places to be for foodies in the city.

I recommend to buy fresh bagels and hummus at st viateur, walk through the neighbourhood to fairmount bagels and buy some bagels to compare of this concurrent. Just next to it is a famous Gnocchi place as well. Head to the lahaie Parc and treat yourself in the sun. If you are still hungry walk to la banquise and try the best poutine in Montreal. Enjoy :)

This was one of our stops on the Mile End Montreal food tour. The Mile End is Montreal's version of Brooklyn, Sodermälm, Shoreditch, and Kreuzberg put together. Hipsters, exotic eateries, and vintage shops abound. Mile End is also the cradle of Montreal’s music scene, cultural diversity and all things trendy and fashionable (but not too mainstream, of course). But more than just a hotbed for tuque-wearers and vintage shops, Mile End is a place where many different cultures coexist and enjoy the best of one another, in a post-industrial meets residential tree-lined avenues type of backdrop. Greek eateries meet Hasidic Jews-owned bagel shops, and artsy coffee shops meet up-and-coming, edgy designers. A dynamic area that should be explored by the senses first and foremost, and where most visitors could easily picture themselves settling down, and never leave. I would recommend walking around this area if you have the time to explore Montreal.

We did a home exchange to Mile End and were not disappointed. It has a fun Tribeca/Brooklyn vibe with a lot of great little cafes, restaurants, bakeries, shops. It probably wouldn't be top on my list if I only had a short time in Montreal, but it was definitely a fun place to stay.

I treated a few of my friends to this tour as part of our getaway. Carolyn was our tour guide and the tour was excellent. This was our first "walking" food tour, really enjoyed it. There were several stops, the first being the meeting place, starting with a Falafel. We progressed to bagels, chocolate, gnocchi, an artisanal bakery. Lovely, lovely day and excellent value. Carolyn is very clever and has an excellent sense of humour. Highly recommend!

My cousins and I were in Montreal a few weeks ago and took the Mile- End Food Tour with Sebastian. We learned! We ate! we were introduced to local merchants and even stopped a woman on the street to get her to weigh in on the " best" bagel in Mile-End. Sebastian was informative and personable, an obvious local who loves his end of the city. We really felt like we now understand the scene there and where to go for unique eating and shopping! I would highly recommend!

Definitely worth checking out. Artsy, lots of good food, cute shops, coffee shops, etc. Szome shopping - check out Jeans Jean Jeans. We were introduced to the store through a tour and will definitely be going back when we have more time to shop there. If you have time to check out a walking food tour of the Mile-End area, you should!
