I did a long walk with my friend who spent his early years in this substantial neighborhood, one of the most upscale in Montreal. Lots of lovely houses and apartment buildings and a great park. Plus some good food.

How does one review a city?
The City of Westmount is a city on the Island of Montreal. The Island of Montreal has several cities (including the City of Montreal) which make up the Montreal Urban Community area. Located at the west end of the central business district of the City of Montreal, Westmount is primarily residential, with some businesses and some shopping. The city boundaries are awkward to describe, but for the visitor's purpose, generally west of Atwater Avenue, east of Claremont Avenue, north of the 720 (Ville-Marie) highway and south of Queen Mary Road will suffice.
Westmount is noted for its homes, especially in Upper Westmount. The "old money" of Montreal often resides, or resided, in this area. Some of the homes are quite impressive, and driving around the sometimes steeply hilled streets of Upper Westmount can be very interesting.
Driving around Summit Circle will also lead to the Westmount Lookout of Mount Royal. This provides a nice view of the whole area and on a clear day one can see down to the upper U. S. A. States, specifically the mountains in that area.
A bit more driving around in Upper Westmount (and a good map) will lead to the back side of Saint Joseph's Oratory along Summit Crescent. From here, one can not only get a nice view of the other direction (north/northwest), but also see the Oratory from an angle many people miss. This is especially attractive at night, when the dome is lit up.
Lower Westmount is not as rich and fancy, but still has a number of interesting buildings to look at.
Westmount in general has much Victorian architecture – one of the almost completely unadulterated areas of same in Canada. In 2012 the City was listed by the Federal Government of Canada as a historically significant site.
Take a walk along Metcalfe Street, and along the west side of that street is to be found an attached row of five houses, in the Queen Anne style, complete with half timbers in the gables and carvings above doorways. More strolling in this area, and along this street, will uncover several of the many differing styles which are all considered to be Victorian.
Stringent regulations in Westmount prohibit the changing of architecture, and all work done on exteriors must be reviewed and consented to by a board prior to any work being undertaken. Some things, such as PVC rails and siding are disallowed entirely.
Shopping may be found along Sherbrooke Street, primarily between Lansdowne and Claremont, and along Greene Avenue. The latter has a number of boutique-type stores which can be pricey.
Westmount Park, located on Sherbrooke Street, is a large, well maintained, green area which is very pleasant to enjoy.
Located in the park you'll also find the Westmount Public Library, which is regarded by some as one of the very best public libraries in all of Canada. The building is expanded now, with some quite modern areas, but a look at the outside of the old building, as well as the inside reading room is well worth a few minutes time.
Connect to the library is the Westmount Conservatory, which contains a few seats, and an interesting display of flowers and plants.
The area has restaurants, fast food, grocery stores and pretty much anything a visitor would need. Major hotels or motels are NOT located inside Westmount, as the community is very much small scale when it comes to such things. In fact, as of this writing, I'm not aware of any hotels inside the City of Westmount proper at all. However, given the location it is certainly easy to visit from any part of Montreal Island.
The area is also easily accessible by public transportation.
Note that along with the regular policing of the Montreal area, Westmount has its own public security, and it patrols around quite thoroughly and regularly. It is not uncommon to have a patrol car appear behind one if driving around and looking about. This is especially true after dark.
In particular, the visitor should pay attention to parking restrictions, which are quite specific and tight. Parking is certainly available, but often restricted by length of time or parking permits.

Grew up there. Go back often. Lots to love. But BEWARE that parking for more than four hours gets a hefty ticket.
Not that there are any signs on streets saying so. Got stung with a ticket and went to Public Security, where I was told (sheepishly, I thought) that there are signs about the parking rule at the borders of Westmount.
Gouge gouge gouge. Very unkind to visitors.

Moved here in March and noticed hardly anyone says hello and everyone looks grumpy! I asked in a store why? Well the reason was the cold weather! Excuse me,when you are happy inside you smile! I lived in Beverly Hills, in Paris for over 22 years in Florida near Palm Beach and this is the most unfriendly place I have been in my life! When your that much of a snob it makes that place charmless! The houses are alright, yes big and some old but when your speaking architecture Paris beats all! Well I like my flat here and my grocery store, that is all that is important for me, sleeping comfortably and eating well and I still say hello when needed because I am happy inside! Oh, I forgot the dogs here are friendly! You can always get a smile from man's best friend!

I visited Westmount Park and Murray Hill Park, also called St Georges Park. Wonderful for children and adults alike. At the top of Murray Park you can get a wonderful view of the river and south shore area. If you choose to walk further up the hill; from Westmount Avenue, north; past the Boulevard, you eventually get to the Westmount summit lookout. Just east of the lookout, if you walk along Summit Circle, you will notice a house that looks identical, a left half and a right half. At one point it was too big for anyone, so they cut it in two, put a driveway up the middle. It lost a few rooms in the process but each piece is still a mansion. You will spend an hour if you walk from Sherbrooke Street up to the Summit. if you want more adventure, walk down Belevedere, to Cote des Neiges and walk up to the other summit at Mount Royal. If you do all this walking, you will really appreciate the monsterous houses as walking always gives you the time to appreciate what you are seeing. Drive it first if you have any doubts so you know what you will encounter if you walk it. Worth spending some time here.

Not being a Westmount resident, I can be unbiased here. The quartier is just lovely. If you are from out of town - drive up Victoria - from Sherbrooke - turn right on Sunnyside and head higher and higher. The road veers to the right - but stay on Sunnyside. Now take Belvedere on your left to the top of Westmount mountain. Circle the bird sanctuary and stop and admire the wonderful vies of the city unfolding to the mighty St. Lawrence river and her bridges. Take a stroll through the Bird Sanctuary - very natural and lovely. You can descend to Sherbrook Street by weaving around the beautiful residential area - especially Westmount Avenue. Westmount is upscale - true- but no longer the bastion of the Anglophone Community. At least 40% of Westmount is Francophone. The gardens, trees and homes are splendid. You won't be sorry. If the air is clear and it is not raining - this is a must-do outing for visiting Montreal in a car.

Westmount is the predominantly English area of the island of Montreal, though French people have been steadily moving in for the last 20 years or so. It is mostly reisidential, and has some of the most beautiful. Victorian mansions you will see anywhere in Canada. The parks are also spectacularly beautiful and peaceful.

Westmount is actually a gorgeous part of Montreal. It has many boutiques and you will love walking down Green avenue. Westmount is mostly residential with the most beautiful home you will ever see. Nice area to drive in or to sit in a park and enjoy the peaceful place.

It is not Bel Air, nor Rodeo Drive. It is not Avenue George V, nor does it lead to the Eiffel Tower. It is not Worth Avenue nor does it end at a beach. It doesn't claim it either for it does not have the retail, the quality or the services that those places have. It does have some nice looking houses with manicured lawns in summer and a blanket of snow in winter. It has sidewalks, but it has an unfriendly neighborhood atmosphere that is not welcoming of pedestrians at all. So if you are visiting Montreal, and you are told to go to Westmount, you will encounter steep hills, never a good morning, a place made for residents and not visitors, one small road called Green Avenue with 2 galleries and one cafe, and a stretch of Sherbrooke Street with amenities for residents, it is not tourist welcoming nor tourist friendly. For a look at the architecture, if you must, hire a taxi, and have a slow drive by. Anything else is a waste of time, it is is residential, it caters to residents, and it is unwelcoming.
