Top ways to experience Rue St. Denis and nearby attractions

The area
Neighbourhood: Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colourful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.

We took the Metro north to Laurier (Orange Line) , got off, wandered around, then walked back downtown while checking out all the small shops, the Murals on the sides of buildings, and coffee bistros. We stopped in at Librairie Renaud-Bray at 4380 Rue St-Denis and spoke with Oliver who helped us find interesting books, kitchen items (yes) and an annual planner.
There are many places to see along the Rue. Worth the walk.

This is by far our best memory of Montreal. The road side cafes (I mean we were literally sitting at a table on the street) and the beer from the micro breweries....WOW!!! You will not believe that you are not in Europe somewhere. It is absolutely refreshing....just a walk along this street and a pint of beer with some fries...thats all you need!

Great restaurants along the way. We usually go there for breakfast crepes when in Montreal. Good selection of all types of restaurants. Start around the intersection of St Catherine and St Denis, up and down. Great atmosphere anytime of the year especially during the summers.

Rue st Denis is the best way to feel the true local vibe of Montreal. Also, you must visit the Jean-Talon market and have lunch. Travel like a local not a tourist, move past old town and on to everything else.

A miscommunication sent us walking all the way from Laurier to Berri-UQAM although St Denis starts mainly from Mont-Royal to Berri-UQAM. However, there are some pretty neat home stores scattered along the street from Laurier so it’s worth it if time permits and if walking is not an issue!

Most stores close pretty early around evening 1700 hours - 1800 hours. (Sundays are not ideal for visit because most stores are not opened.) If you head from Laurier or Mont-Royal, it’s a great way to end the day in the relaxed terraces of St Denis nearer to Berri-UQAM and soak in the local culture!

St Denis has tons of restaurant and bars, cafes and flavourful places and of course your regular chains. During summer, I would suggest you to enter in any of the more local restaurants and seat outside. Many are well-known for a happy hours before you go to eat. Lots to choose from, various prices. Many (if not all) accept you bringing your own wine/alcohol and they charge you a nominal cork fee.

Even though I arrived in my own car, deciding to leave my car parked in front of my hotel and explore all of Old Montreal and the surrounding area was by far the best choice (and from where I stayed, the start of this street was just 2 blocks from my hotel!). Actually, the many shops, restaurants, bars... on this street can really ONLY be appreciated on foot! restaurants, etc.
