The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Le Sud-Ouest (Southwest District)
Once the core of industrialised Montreal, the factories and historic buildings of Le Sud-Ouest have been renovated into homes, museums, and small businesses. The rejuvenated landscape has put its Saint-Henri district in vogue, with cutting-edge galleries and an ever-expanding network of restaurants. Foodies can especially delight in the mom-and-pop shops in Little Burgundy, or at the Atwater Market, where outdoor stalls sell fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat, street vendors have menus of hot fish and wine, and the indoor market offers chocolate, breads, and coffee beans. Dominated by the gentle waters of the Lachine Canal, Le Sud-Ouest is still very much an outdoor town, with a number of pedestrian-only bridges traversing the waters, bike paths along the canal with views of the Leisure Boats, and massive green spaces like Angrignon Park to stop for a picnic, or to play a sport.

    Prefer this market
We preferred this market to the Jean-Talon one, its much more of a locals market with a great selection of stalls. We had a superb lunch from the large bakery which also as a seating area. Really liked some of the cheese stalls. We went by Uber as staying in Old Montreal so quite a walk if on foot

A wonderful indoor and outdoor market!
My wife and I spent a week in Montreal exploring the city prior to a conference of mine, and came down to the Market twice, the first time to explore, the second to buy food and treats for the flight home. The market was straightforward to get to via Uber from the downtown, a block away from Lachine Canal at the south end of Little Burgundy. The exterior of the market was filled with fresh flowers and plantings for gardening season, as well as a multitude of farmers with their produce. The physical market building was filled with charcuteries, bakeries, butchers, fromageries...we had trouble on our second trip with where to buy from, as the selections were plentiful and enticing!

    Amazing little market place
This was an amazing little market! Felt very local and the fruit was amazing. Parking was easy and free (a rarity in this city) and we spent a large part of the morning into the early afternoon here. So much to see and so much to buy. We wished we lived here just to take advantage of this market everyday. We got lunch at the BBQ stand at the end and everyone loved what they got. Lots of places to buy cheese, meat, fruit, plants and baked goods. Would highly recommend and would visit again. This wasn't on our list of places to go, Jean Talon was, but a local recommended it, so we tried it and loved it.

    So jealous of this market
Really beautiful market with an amazing selection of foods. Definitely seemed less touristy than we feared. Being able to speak French would make life easier here, but we got by fine. Had breakfast in a cafe, bought pastries and bread, then relied on helpful advice at the fromagerie to pick some cheeses to go with ham we bought for an afternoon picnic. Lachine canal was a great place to have that picnic. The Metro is very easy to use and stops very near the market. Definitely recommend that as a way to get there.

HUGE market, find almost anything both indoor and outdoor vendors. Excellent!
This was our 4th day visiting Montreal and we were become more familiar with the city, so on a bright sunny morning on Sunday, August 4, 2024, we ventured out from our hotel in Old Port to walk the 3.2 kilometers to get here. The walk was great, fun things to see on the way. Arriving at the market about 9:30 AM we were totally impressed. This place is HUGE. Even this early on a Sunday the place was already bustling with customers. Great market for fresh flowers, fresh veggies, fruits and all types of plants. The other half is indoors and air conditioned. Here there are meat markets, fresh lobsters and other fish, Italian specialties, coffee shop, gift shops, small groceries and so much more. We spent about 3 hours here and I don't believe we saw it all. We made several purchases at various places, enjoyed a coffee and pastry break. We really enjoyed our time here. This place excites all your senses. Very highly recommended to be on your must do list when visiting Montreal.

We had decided to include this on our itinerary to visit whilst we were in Montreal. We had already visited the Jean Talon market expecting the markets to be same as markets in England which comprise food, hardware and local artefacts. Unfortunately, all that was on sale was food (mainly fruit and vegetables) but Atwater Market is even smaller than the Jean Talon market. We travelled there using the Metro (brilliant by the way) but there was no point in buying anything as we were on holiday staying in a hotel so we only stayed in the market for about 10 minutes and then walked around the area for about half an hour as there didn't seem to be much to see there. The market would be brilliant for holidaymakers who are self-catering in close proximity but with hindsight, we shouldn't have bothered to make the trip.

Went on a rainy day, many food stalls closed, and few interesting stands. Clearly not the best time of the year to go there.

I did find one interesting maple syrup stand where I bought some cans and maple butter for a competitive price.

Online it showed a lot more happening for the Christmas Market 2020 as part of the Atwater Market, was pretty deceptive in size and I suppose we expected more.. we waited 30-40 mins outside for a 5 minute experience. Hopefully next year the line up makes it worth the while.

Yes you come here for all the produce and meats and bakeries. All wonderful quality. But you need to taste the special maple syrup. Made by third generation Gilbert Jodoin. His wife and son, Mathew also work here. Three really lovely people. Buy it when it is in season. You can get different levels of intensity.
I prefer the lighter version.
Gilbert also sells produce from his farms.
When you go there tell them George from Los Angeles through Trip Advisor got you to go.
I wish that the markets in Los Angeles had as good quality produce as Atwater market has. There is great boulangerie upstairs. They have great sandwiches and breads and pastries. AND more. Really good quality.
You will be tempted to buy everything you see.

I like markets, I like to go shopping there or just to look around. That's why I couldn't miss this second largest market in Toronto (after Jean-Talon Market). Outdoor stands offered flowers, fruits and vegetables, or maple syrup products. The inner market is home to many butchers, bakeries, grocery stores and restaurants. There you can buy cheese, wine, fish and ingredients for all kinds of world cuisines such as Arabic, Japanese or European cuisine.

The market building is in the Art Deco style and its dominant feature is the clock tower. It is definitely worth going here, whether you want to buy fresh farm products or simply see what it looks like here.

The Atwater Market sometimes plays second fiddle to Jean Talon Market but it is basically the same market with a wide variety of fresh vegetables, flowers and specialty stores selling everything from Honey to Seafood. Going early in the season as I did there wasn’t as much selection of vegetables, but that will come in time. Huge amounts of flowers are for sale and overall is a fantastic market to visit
