Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

These huge stone structures were fortifications built by the British for defensive purposes in the early 19th century. I toured one in Quebec City which overlooked the St. Lawrence River. They are several stories high and have a lot of room inside. It is worth an hour or two to tour one of these structures.

This tower was one of four built. There are 3 left. We drove by on our caleche tour. The upstairs had a gun platform and the main floor could hold an army unit inside. This tower was built by the British and for defence.

There were originally 4 Martello Towers. Tower 1 is on the plains of abraham.
Just north of this tower 1 block from the park is the 2nd tower. it is at the northwest corner of Tache and Wilfrid-Laurier Streets. The 3rd is no more and the 4th is just west of the Rue Philippe-Dorval on the Rue Lavigueur (across from house #169).
The towers were built from 1808 to 1812 and were built to protect quebec from the then american threat to the south.

This had an i-pad tour describing the construction of the tower, the conditions inside, and the history. It was thoughtfully and interestingly done and a highlight for us.

Visited the martello tower on the Plains of Abraham during a recent Canada trip with the family, including kids ages 7 and 11. This was an actual martello tower, turned into a museum with augmented-reality exhibits. Each guest gets to borrow an ipad, which has an app that interfaces with the exhibits. You pick the number of the exhibit and you get an audio-visual presentation, featuring a fun, comedic voice actor. The tower has three stories available for visit.

It was quite educational. It's not every day one gets to explore a real defense tower, with an augmented-reality tour guide. I daresay the kids found it rather engaging, at least for a bit, although after a while my youngest one lost interest in carrying and handling the ipad, preferring to let daddy carry it.

The kids took turns climbing on and posing for photos on the wooden punishment / torture horse on the top floor (without realizing that was what it was for, because they were no longer using their ipads by then). It's not so painful, so long as you can dismount whenever you want.

This was not a long visit. Maybe somewhere around 30 minutes tops. I would recommend this as part of a visit to the Plains of Abraham.

Three of the original four remain, and one may be toured. They are typical of the many towers built by the British in the 1800’s. They were much sturdier than the Block houses they replaced.

The one near the river offers nice views.

We saw the Martello Tower on the Plains of Abraham when we walked to see the Joan of Arc statue. This is where the Canadian Army stored their ammunition.

We stopped at the Martello Towers (#3 I believe Beside the Plains of Abraham) for a school tour. We had two guides dressed in traditional military gear for the time who took us through the histories of the towers. Very interactive and a must stop to see how we fortified against American Invasion!

A great spot to visit! The gentleman that greeted us was friendly, informative and helpful. He handed us an Ipad, gave us some instruction (and was always willing to answer questions) and we were able to explore the entire tower with our own tour guide (the IPad). A great idea!
