- joe-chicago-23Chesterfield, Missouri1,284 contributionsShop, shop, shop, eat, eat, eatIt's a sensory overload walking through here. Several tourist souvenir shops seem to repeat, but there are many more choices. Plus, wonderful chocolate and ice cream stores for your senses of smell and taste. You may need to visit twice to find all the streets. Enjoy the architecture and the restaurants as well.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 October 2023
- Cindy GSan Antonio, Texas375 contributionsWonderful Area to ExploreWe spent two days exploring the area's shops and restaurants. Great variety of places to visit. Lighting at night was wonderful and the the area felt very safe. We were there right before Halloween, so everything was decorated. Plenty of places to take photos!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 12 January 2024
- TheLeongOhanaUnited States7,575 contributionsPicturesque StreetOne of the most photogenic streets in Québec City was filled with shops and restaurants. In April there wasn’t much crowds so it was pleasant to stroll through. There were a couple of unique addresses ending in 1/2 instead of a whole number. We could not figure out how one door qualified as a 1/2 versus others.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 May 2024
- JFWhiteMoncton, Canada7,625 contributionsBeautiful SpotWalked in the Petit Champlain lately. This street is very cute, there are different shops around to visit, a few restaurant. The atmosphere is just wonderful. I strongly suggest you go up the stairs and stop by a restaurant on the stairs location to have a wonderful view. You will not regret!Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 18 June 2024
- sanju_222323New Jersey17,373 contributionsthe Quartier Petit Champlain is arguably the most beautiful area of the cityOnce the bustling capital of New France, the Quartier Petit Champlain is arguably the most beautiful area of the city. Wandering the narrow streets that are laced between the historic buildings makes you feel like you are in the heart of an old European City. The Quartier Petit Champlain is the oldest shopping district in North America and a great place to buy souvenirs for your friends. Here, boutique shops and cozy cafes spill out of restored houses. A fun fact: One of the neighborhood's houses belonged to Louis Jolliet, the French-Canadian explorer credited with discovering the Mississippi River. The stone structures that line the pedestrian-only streets now house a wide variety of shops, services, and restaurants. This is the perfect place to visit for strolling and meandering, and it's a truly lovely area year-round. Québec-cuisine restaurants and bistros, art galleries, and a generous assortment of sweets shops offering everything from handcrafted fudge and nougat to a stylish Crêperie Restroom: Ask anyone and they can point you in the right direction, its 1 level down on the main road level. What a relief finding one when you need itVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 July 2024
- J WMinneapolis, Minnesota272 contributionsOld World CharmOur family of 5, all adults, visited Quebec City last month. Rue du Petit-Champlain is a must see street. Amazing architecture , murals, art, restaurants, and shopping. Our family walked through neighborhoods and down the sloped sidewalks to reach the Lower Town and then road the Funiculaire de Vieux back up to Dufferin Terrace.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 August 2024
- traveltheworld012Rochester, Minnesota17,080 contributionsOne of the oldest streets in lower town.We spent 24 hours in Quebec City, soaked up the history, walked the cobblestone streets and admired the architecture. This is near the location of where you catch the funicular to the top of the walled city. If you go early in the day as we did like before 10AM, you will avoid the hoards of tourists and crowded streets. At this time the streets are still nearly empty and the walking is much more pleasant.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 August 2024
- Eva TUnited Kingdom5,655 contributionsCharming streetThis is very popular street in Old Québec’s lower town. Be prepared that is full of tourists, and I mean really full. We liked the old houses, its architecture. Nearly all have a shop or restaurant or cafe. It was nice to see it.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 September 2024

Here- we shopped until we dropped. The shoppes were terrific. Most people spoke English. They were stocked with jewelry, crystals, figurines, Canadian souvenirs, wines, maple syrup, alpaca sweaters and on and on. I splurged on an alpaca handmade scarf by a local artist. Ate in the Little Piggie restaurant- (sorry name escapes me) bu delish. Lots of Xmas were still up and that made the streets even more magical. Do not miss it.

We visited between Christmas and NYE where the holiday spirit was still in full swing. We had our 4 young children with us who all enjoyed our evening strolls through the Champlain. To the Christmas Carolers singing, the glistening lights, the authentic maple taffy, the warm wine being served street side. It was wonderful! Certainly a spot worth visiting if in town. My only recommendation is if taking young children who need a stroller during winter months, bring a sled or carry pack to pull them around, as pushing a stroller was impossible some days. We would love to return if we come to Quebec again.

if for nothing else but sightseeing there is no shortage of interesting places to see along the streets of shops. I ended up buying a wallet ( hand made in Canada ) and had I not bought warm winter boots before travelling, I likely would have got some as well. You need to be patient with the number of people who come here as when it is mid-day to early evening it will be busy. There are a number of restaurants and bistros to choose from but beware the wait times can/are long due to the large number of people. Do not be misled, there is a large amount of touristy trap crap to be found but there is also some hidden gems that are unique and Canadian made and frankly not a gouge on the pocketbook. The funniest thing that happened was a car of tourists who ( I'm sure they thought the GPS was right ) tried to drive on the "street" loaded with people. The architecture of the Old City is very pronounced here for those of us who relish in that kind of stuff. Certainly recommend this as part of an experience of Quebec City.

This could be a street out of any European city, cobblestone walkways, boutique specialty stores, charming atmosphere, and wonderful restaurants and bars. This is a very safe and walkable shopping area that sits below the main walks of Old Quebec. There is a Funicular that takes you to the upper level for a fee but saves the climb up the stairs for those who have walked too much.

During our “10-Day Canada and New England” cruise aboard Caribbean Princess ship last October, our ship arrived at her final destination, Quebec City. After visiting Notre-Dame de Québec Cathedral-Basilica, Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac and Terrasse Dufferin in Upper Town, we walked down to Rue du Petit Champlain via Frontenac Escalier (staircase). When we looked down Rue du Petit Champlain from the last leg of the staircase, we were fascinated by the charming pedestrian street with cute shops. The bustling narrow street scene reminded us of a charming Alpine village scene. The cute shops along the street displayed variety of attractive products. So many people were walking along the street in a festive mood. We passed Frontenac Funicular station along the way. We came across so many Asian tour groups walking around the area. Quebec City and Quartier Petit Champlain seemed to be a magnate to so many Asian tourists arriving here by air, bus or ship. Quartier du Petit Champlain seemed to be a crown jewel of Quebec City, and it is a must visit attraction.

Quartier Petit Champlain is a wonderful place to spend a bit of time. The streets, old buildings and potted plants and flowers make this a charming place to wander around. Most of the shops are not chains but are rather unique artisans so you can find wonderful things that you will never find elsewhere. Be sure to stop too at the sugar shack and try the maple taffy made freshly on snow.

This is such a pretty little area with some beautiful streets, original shops with a great range of goods for sale and plenty to see and do.
We took the funicular up towards Château de Frontenac - it was really snowy when we were there, but the funicular was still running. There were also numerous people about with chainsaws - not as scary as it sounds! - they were making ice sculptures outside every shop for an event. Such talent!
You really must visit this area and take home some souvenirs from the beautiful shops.

My wife and I strolled through this area each evening during our stay in old QC from January 23, 2020 through January 25, 2020. If you enjoy stopping into a variety of beautifully lit shops this place is for you. It seemed like there was a decorated area around every corner. It felt like we were in a place you only see in movies.

This is my favourite section of Québec City. One can spend hours exploring the restaurants and shops dating back hundreds of years. The cobblestone roads remind you of trips in Europe. Every trip to Québec City should devote hours/days exporing Quartier Petit Champlain.

We were in quartier during the big storm and visited three stores, striking up conversations with the people who worked there. The street if very quaint, lots of little nooks for pictures you won't get elsewhere in the city, and unique products on offer. You could spend several hours on a warmer day, including a meal.

I’m not sure if I’ve just missed the umbrella’s or do they take them down for winter?
Written 21 October 2018
They are in a little corner. They were being repaired last week, but not getting taken down. They are behind the building with the red roof near the ferry terminal.

My mother will be in a lightweight push wheelchair. Would it be possible to maneuver this area?
Written 25 September 2018
The streets are paved with Cobble Stones and are a bit hilly so she might find manoeuvring the area a bit challenging.

What are the buses or trains that I could take from Toronto to Petit Champlain???
Written 18 November 2017
If you prefer by bus or train to Old Quebec City, I suggest you better join bus tour in Toronto. The price is affordable/reasonable, (not expensive). They include accommodation (3.5-5 star), is really a good deal,

Hi! When do they put the Christmas lights up at Rue du Petit-Champlain and Place-Royale? We're thinking about going over Thanksgiving (November 23-26) in 2017, but we don't want to go if everything is not decorated yet.
Thanks!
Written 5 December 2016
We were there November 10-12 and they were putting up the decorations and setting up the Christmas village shops on the square. At Thanksgiving they will be in full swing for Christmas
