I rented a bike from Cadence Cycle in downtown Whitehorse and I cycled up 2 Mile Road to the white horse statue, and then down the Alaska Highway to Miles Canyon. I returned back to downtown White horse via Schwatka Lake and all the floatplanes. I highly recommend this route to everyone by car or bike. Miles Canyon is definitely not to be missed. It is so pristine and clean and quiet. I crossed the bridge and then did the trails to the right of the bridge which were easy and offered some breathtaking views. It’s hard to believe there’s a park like this so close to the city.

Fresh from landing in Whitehorse, we went to the Miles Canyon. Pretty quiet area, great introduction and great time to condition yourself to the lack of crowds in parks unlike what you experience down south.
Yukon river colours were vivid and coming out and going north, there is also a lookout of the canyon and the nearby mountains.

Excellent but the west bank is impassable now due to wash outs on sand cliff. Do not attempt this with children, dogs. You will end up having to cut out to miles canyon road in order to get back to start.
There definitely are some each and swimming areas on east side which are nice. Take bear spray.

Take a friend or family or even a tour boat to blast through the canyon waters . It will not disappoint . You can walk or hike along side of it or take the swinging bridge across the canyon to the other side . Loop around for a wonderful walk

Awesome views just a short ride from Whitehorse. Easy to get to. Several trails to along the river, and you can hike to the top of the island. Can easily spend an hour or more there, or you can enjoy the view from the parking lot and be on your way. A must do if you're in the area.

Spectacular trail. We actually walked out there from Whitehorse and back again so that racked up a few miles.
The most amazing and varied scenery and hardly anyone around. A little bit tricky at times if you miss the main trail especially near the canyon on the narrow path next to the gorge with tree roots ready to trip you up if you're not careful.
It was all well worth the effort and highly recommend.

Lovely spot to go for a day hike, or only if you have an hour. Easiest to get to if you have a car - not sure public transit goes here. Loved the beauty and stillness of the canyon Went on a weekday afternoon and not many people around either.

Super informative guide on two hour walk. Some steep spots so being in shape helps. Absolutely beautiful views from bridge. Not wheelchair accessible at all. Ghost town at end of tour is basically just the spot. No buildings etc. definitely worth it though!! Beautiful scenery!

I was so sad to learn that I couldn’t access most of the trail, nor the bridge, in late April due to snow. But what can you do- it’s Whitehorse!! I parked just off the Alaska Hwy and walked in. The walk was lovely and still had a beautiful spot to view the water. I can’t even imagine the beauty in the summer.

This is my favorite go to hiking location. The first time I saw Miles canyon was on a boat over 20 years ago. The colour of the water blew my mind. I now live here and am fortunate enough to come here often. Miles and Miles of trails. Do be bear aware.

How far is the walk from the parking lot to the suspension bridge? Distance, difficulty and time?
Written 20 September 2020
The walk is not far, around 5 minutes, but it does involve going down a staircase and then walking on the natural surface of the rock canyon - not paved. Not difficult but not wheelchair accessible.

Hi there, how can I drive to Miles Canyon in winter time having noted that the road is closed? I plan to visit the canyon and see the suspension bridge in early February. Is it possible and safe to drive there around mid-night to see the northern light in the Miles Canyon area? Thanks in advance for reply and info.

Its a very short drive from the Alaska highway to the parking lot near the bridge so it might be possible but I don't know if they keep that road open. Maybe you can walk from the highway instead.

I saw an advertisement for a site seeing cruise through the canyon. Is this still running?
Written 9 August 2018
Not sure what as you saw but we took a cruise with Captain Kens Adventures. We were more than happy with the experience. Captain Ken was very informative.

How do I get there using public transportation?
Written 3 February 2017
Yes I agree, there are no buses that go there. If you cannot rent a vehicle then a cab would be the only alternative. It is a breath taking view of the Yukon River with a suspension bridge below that if you can drive there you will be able to walk across the bridge and rock it if you like swaying! At night during the season when the Aurora borealis is visible, it is a great place away from city lights!

Would we be able to drive into Miles Canyon area with a 40ft motor home? Not a lot of clearance on this RV/bus.
Written 3 July 2016
Yes, you can. There are tour busses that go down all the time, and I personally drove a 112 passenger bus down when I worked for summer camps. The trick is to not park in the lower parking lot that gets really tight with other cars. I would advise parking on the side of the area that is just before the parking lot. tour busses tend to stop here, and it provides enough clearance to get out as well.

hello polonajaki, you can find Miles Canyon a short distance from downtown Whitehorse, travelling south out of town in the summer you can take the route alone the lake or continue to the highway and south to the "look out" of the canyon. It is a good walk into the river, you can cross Yukon River on the foot bridge and hike to Canyon City to explore the site of a stop the river boats would make on the way to the gold fields. You can also rent a canoe and paddle up river to the canyon if you are experienced, the Yukon is a strong river. Highly recommend this day trip.
