About
Seán MacDiarmada’s Cottage Co. Leitrim Visit the house of the 1916 Easter Rising leader Seán Mac Diarmada in Kiltyclogher, County Leitrim. This beautiful cottage is a designated National Monument owned and maintained in its original condition by the Office of Public Works. The cottage is of considerable historic importance, not only as the single existing home place of any of the seven signatories of the proclamation but as a fine example of a traditional Irish cottage, offering an insight into what life was like over 100 years ago. Seán MacDiarmada played a pivotal role in planning the Easter Rising of 1916. He was one of the seven signatories that signed the Proclamation of Irish Independence. Following his arrest after the Rising he was court martialed and executed by firing squad on 12th of May 1916 in the Stone-Breaker’s Yard in Kilmainham Gaol.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Thoroughly enjoyed the presentation at the heritage Center in Kiltyclogher. It included fascinating background information about Kiltyclogher, Sean and the 1916 uprising. The tour of Sean's childhood home was fantastic because the cottage is virtually unchanged since his day and has been beautifully maintained. From the open turf fire to the settle bed to the photos and letters from Sean this place is a precious gem.

If you are visiting lovely Leitrim be sure and make time to visit Kiltyclogher Heritage Centre and Sean MacDiarmada Homestead. Ciaran is so full of knowledge and has a genuine love of the history of the area you will feel that you have stepped back in time and know the characters that he brings to life. Both Ciaran and Joe were generous with their welcome, their time and their information. We all had a thoroughly enjoyable visit. Many thanks.

A fine example of what Irish life was like 100 years ago. Nothing has been changed since Sean lived there. Particularly fascinating was a book of Sean's writings from school. Well worth a visit

We began at the heritage centre where we were treated to a talk by Kieran whose love if his subject was infectious. We all learnt lot. The he and Joe took us to the house and both gave us lots of information bringing the house and it's history to life. A truly lovely day. We were a large group ranging in age from 19 to 65 and everyone found it an interesting day.

Many thanks to Joe our tour guide for a very interesting and interactive tour of this house. The turf fire that gets lit leaves a smell which helps to imagine what life was like for the family at the time. Joe went above and beyond with an informed visit and showed us the beautiful surrounding countryside. It was a great experience in what was a wonderful weekend in this village.

I have attached some photos of photographs and washing basins etc. But they don’t do justice to how good this tour was. Many thanks

Ciaran was friendly knowledgable and happy to talk about Sean MacDiarmada, his life and the area in general. Very helpful and the Lego video for kids was a great touch.

I made the trip up from Drumshanbo the morning I was due to fly home. Arrived in the Heritage Centre and was walked through the life and times of one of the most important people in Ireland’s history, by Ciaran, a fantastic guide.

Ciaran then took me up to the cottage, which is in a beautiful spot. The cottage itself is in good condition, small as you would expect, but with many of the original features. You really do get a feel for the humble surroundings where Seán came from.

My husband and I were exploring local churches and cemeteries in the Kiltyclogher area, and we stopped at the Kiltyclogher Heritage Center as we passed through town. We were so happy that we did. The docent that day was Ciaran and he gave us a whirlwind view of local history and the Easter Uprising. The Heritage Center is not large, but has some unique articles and artifacts. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.
