Visited for drinks and a snack. Cosy and warm, gorgeous cocktails, really comfortable, friendly staff, great service, relaxed ambience - I cannot recommend this venue highly enough.

We came here for lunch and were disappointed. The interior itself is nice and there is a good selection of drinks, but it was also cold and we were hoping for a warm cosy atmosphere after having been outside all day. We shared the mac and cheese bites to start which were good, but it all went downhill from there. Our main courses were shocking. My ham, egg and chips was mediocre, with the chips hugely undercooked and soggy. My partner's burger was even worse. The meat was grey/brown, having been overcooked and was, quote- 'dry, chewy, and no seasoning'. Chips were the same as mine- undercooked, oily, soggy. He gave up after three or four mouthfuls. We told the waiter of the problems with the food when it was cleared away. When it came to the bill, we were not happy to pay for the burger and were given the answer 'I can't just take it off because you didn't like it', to which my partner replied 'it's not just that I didn't like it, it's the fact that the entire dish was badly cooked and inedible'. The waitress then huffily took it off the bill, saying 'I'm not going to argue'. With both of us working in the hospitality industry (my partner, a chef, working for Shepherd Neame, who also tenants- not manages, which was a very important distinction to the waitress- the Castle Hotel), the phrase 'the customer is always right' is an often difficult rule to work by, but nevertheless needs to be respected and adhered to. When we mentioned this to the waitress, she proceeded to tell us 'you're not a customer, you work for Shepherd Neame'. I thought they were adamant that they were not a Shepherd Neame pub? I'm also pretty sure that anyone who pays money is defined as a customer. Until the attitude of the staff improves and the chef either changes or learns how to cook properly, we won't be returning…

It is so easy these days to leave a negative feedback but and it is a pleasure to leave a positive feedback. Fantastic we stayed recently with by brother and his wife, superb hospitality, this is also our second and my wife's third visit, it has a lovely warm atmosphere, very dog friendly, food was excellent, drinks by the log fire, can't promote the Castle enough! Have to give credit to "Lizzy" and staff well done and keep it up MR & MRS BROWN…
