Downstream - Upstream: An exciting journey through the history of the historical shipping on the Danube within the historical ambience of the "Erlahof" castle. Let us dive down to the bed of the river and see what it has kept as a record of ancient times - in the Danube. Let us travel against the current of the river, upstream in a heavily laden timber cargo boat - with the Danube and follow the teams of horses that pulled the boat upstream against the current with enormous effort - on the Danube. At the villages along the riverbanks to the workshops of a boat builder and the raft construction sites - along the Danube. This is the way we take to follow the course of the Danube in the museum and to learn how our forefathers earned a living: in harmony with the moods of the river and the mighty forces of nature.

The Danube flows very fast, and this museum, in a lovely building, illustrates the struggle over the centuries to travel up and down. Vast teams of horses, pulling long strings of barges up the river very well displayed. Do visit!

We had a wonderful local guide for our tour of this museum. It is dedicated to travel and commerce on the Danube before there were modern ships. There were life-sized horses to depict the pulling of barges up the river. The model ship is very...More

This is a small museum but well worth a journey to learn about travel on the Danube in former days. It is located in a beautiful former Bishop's residence and the architecture alone would almost justify a visit. However, the exhibits are well laid out...More

This is a small, but excellent museum providing insight into the importance of the Danube for commerce, in particular, and the history of shipping on the Danube, in general. It definitely contributes to the understanding of life along the Danube through the display of artifacts,...More

This museum is almost completely dedicated to a life on and around the Danube with some other nautical additions. The exhibits are exceptionally good and many have translation into English. Getting to the museum is an easy walk from the bus stop. On the return...More

We spent a week biking the Danube. This museum helped give a little perspective on life and navigation on the Danube. It was about a 5 -7 minute bike ride from the cener of Spitz. This is not a world class museum and its not...More
