Large castle that lacks any notable features other than good views of the surrounding countryside. The castle overlooks a small bland village, its worth an hour breaking a journey between Melfi & Potenza if you have your own transport but not worth the effort of public transport as the station is some way from town & is connected via an... The castle itself is big, totally dominating the hill it is on and the village it crowns.Well restored, evocative, But the best thing is the audio-visual 'spectacle' they have about the life of Federico II. Not the greatest thing ever but charming, sometimes a little oldskool (the videos with actors) but it's one of the few places of it's kind... More

Great, newly renovated exhibits on Federico II...in Italian though- helps if you speak Italian (at a fairly high degree of fluency- which both my boyfriend and myself do...). Even if you don't- beautiful surroundings...

This fortification began in the era of Frederick II and developed as time went by. It was occupied by the Doria clan until the 1960's. Interesting presentation of high medieval life. Corny feature: a peep show presented from a large image of a queen's crown. One looks in through holes in the Crown and sees short vignettes of medieval life,... More

This castle has a fascinating history, including the Normans, the Swabians and the Angevins. Very well restored with a lot of interesting stuff inside, including a marvellous fresco in the chapel and a little museum of the castle's history. A nice complement to the ancient material we saw elsewhere in Basilicata. . We loved best the corridor to the chapel... More

Castel Lagopesole is visible for several miles as you travel along the strada statale heading south towards Potenza as it sits one a hill above the small town of Lagopesole. The castle was one of Federico II's several castles in this area including the one at Melfi to the north and Castel de Monte in Puglia. The castle has 2... More
