This was my first solo trip and I can say that exceeded my expectations. Located in a peaceful setting up the mountains near Heraklion, the stables are beautiful as well as the horses. The riding trails are amazing; you can appreciate nature, hear the free roaming sheep bells, watch the goats climb the rocky terrain with ease, and, of course, enjoy a walk, trot, and canter with your specially selected horse according to your ability. Andrea, the guide, was great. She made every ride enjoyable and safe, instilling confidence in yourself as a rider and providing useful feedback. Riding was part of a 5-day horse riding vacation which included full board. I greatly recommend this if you're able to ride more than one day! The hotel and restaurant Velani were amazing. I miss the home made breakfasts with local fresh ingredients and an unbeatable view. I truly hope to be back.

My daughter found this lovely place via internet. Up in the mountains you will find this romantic setting: Fantastic nice stables, with beautiful horses. A mixed staff of international people, who are super friendly. My daughter of 12 felt home within minutes. She loved the 2 hour trip!

In the meantime I could enjoy the lovely hospitality at the Velani restaurant and the fantastic view of the terrace. What an environment! Also the staff there was amazingly friendly.

We stayed at Hotel Velani for a week and rode at Odysseia Stables, which is overlooked by the hotel, every day.

Our daughters and I had amazing riding lessons from Vladimir and Beau who are gifted teachers. They encouraged our children, who grew a huge amount in confidence and ability in just one week. The energy they put into the teaching was extraordinary.

They made us feel so welcome around the stables, encouraging us to tack up our horses ourselves and giving us tips on how to do things right. They continually imparted lots of useful information to us so that we learnt lots about horses not just about riding.

The horses are beautiful and very well looked after. The stables are built beautifully by the owners Sabine and Manolis who have really thought about every detail.

We can't wait to go back.

I would highly recommend visiting the stables for the 2 hour ride with Beau the guide. She was very knowledgable of the area, and incredibly caring and attentive to the horses. You could instantly see that this was somewhere where animal welfare was a top priority. The ride itself features beautiful views and winding trails up the mountains - a perfect evening activity.

Afterwards we decided to eat at the restaurant which was one of the best meals of our holiday, with an amazing view over the valley during the sunset. It is very affordable priced, with top quality service. Again, I would definitely recommend!

Had a lovely ride through the mountains lead by the lovely Bo (fantastic guide, lovely to meet you!). The stables are beautiful and most importantly the horses are cared for superbly.
Was surprised to find the stables also has a restaurant, I did not eat here but it looks beautiful!
Views and scenery are amazing, staff are caring and attentive. Cannot recommend enough!
Thank you for a wonderful day Bo, Sabine and Manolis!

I really enjoyed the hack with Bo. She was very friendly and patient with me as I had not been on a horse in 4 years. The horses look healthy and well taken care of and the surroundings are lovely. I very much recommend it.

The hotel is clean and beautiful. The activity of horse riding looks great (but we didn't try it). The swimming pool is small and the hotel is far from the beaches (40 min and these are not the best places to go). Then, the yoga retreat was so bad that we left after 1 day. The hotel was not fair with us, lying on some refunding process... We don't recommend.

We are returning guests to this gem in the middle of Crete. Well maintained horses and tailored approach helped to boost my confidence with horses. My daughter (10) and I stayed in Velani for intensive horseback riding lessons and outside trek with experienced trainer Vladimir. His lessons were interesting and professionally organised with individual approach to get maximum out of the lesson. I was (and still am) very happy with the experience!

I did a 2 hour evening hack with 3 other riders and the leader Vladimir.
I am an experienced rider, but hadn’t done a lot of riding in the past 10 years. I was surprised to see that I seemed to know how to tack up the horse a little better than the attendant, but in any case, all was well.

For the first hour it was fantastic- walks, trots and canters across a beautiful countryside.

Then, I fell off my horse while galloping- a mistake made by me by leaning too far over while trying to swerve a tree. The horse was well behaved, it was a simple accident. I ended up injuring my arm and my ankle quite badly (small fracture).

Unfortunately this is where things fell apart. Vladimir was clearly completely panicked and had no idea what to do- he kept saying ‘I’m freaking out, we’re really far away, you have to get back on the horse, we can’t help’. He then kept trying to touch my ankle which wasn’t helpful. He really should have been trained in first aid.

I somehow managed to get back on the horse, but I was in a lot of pain. Vladimir continued to be rather oblivious and kept riding off ahead, which encouraged my horse to want to run...not very helpful.

Eventually, when it was clear that I was in too much pain to continue riding, Vladimir called the owner to come and pick me up in the car to take me back to the stables. The owner then said ‘can we pick up my children and their grandmother first’.....so I was stuck in the car in a lot of pain with no ice or anything while she ran her errands....

When we finally got back to the stables, an older gentleman who claimed he was trained in first aid proceeded to roughly grab my ankle, put ice directly onto my skin and tried to bandage it with an old dirty flannel (I am first aid trained, and all of these are mistakes.). My husband and I were furious and we just got out of there.

They refused to take payment, which was very good of them.

My main problem here is the fact that they have no real plan for accidents- and accidents do happen with horses. Nobody was first aid trained, the leader was freaked out and had no idea what to do, and the owner seemed more concerned with running her errands than tending to an injured customer.

It’s a beautiful stables, the horses are beautiful and well behaved (the accident was more my fault than the horse going too quickly), and I would recommend this place. But they need to review their accident policies and get some proper first aid kits and training. It’s imperative when working with sports like this.

Dear Julia let me introduced my self as i am the oldest gentleman ,owner of the stables who try to help you. My name is Manolis i am 53 years old and i finished the sport university in Greece. I was coaching basketball teams till the level of A1 division (highest in Greece) working with professional NBA players. I spend the last 2 years of my studies learning about sport injuries ,how to trite and how to help athletes recover from injuries similar to yours as this the most common injure in basketball. In my carrier i work together with many orthopedic doctors and physiotherapists. Every year i follow first aid seminaries which is necessary from the Greek government to get working permission for our hotel. I had my self similar injures like yours as basketball player, one was very serious. The first think you have to do in this type of injuries is to cool them with ice or with cooling spray and then keep the injured part in a higher position than your hart level, together with a well placed bandage, with ice . These are the first thinks that helps to minimized the internal bleeding. Then is the time for the doctor. The problem is that probably because of having pane you didn't like even to touch your leg. You push my hands away even before touch it. Once i had your leg on my hands you push my hand away once again. Then your husband saw you in pane and try to help you by bringing your car as soon as possible. You step from my car to your car In 10 min and left. The 10 min we spend together i had the feeling you didn't like my help because you didn't trust me from the first moment. I think from my experience you was in an upset situation. When you left i gave you ice and a cloth that you mention as dirty ( i did't see that ) with the attention that you place it in between your skin and the ice to protect it from ice burn. Is the only think i had to do as it was very clear you didn't like my help. I even told you to lean backwards and put you leg high during driving. You told me is ok and you left as a normal car passenger. I saw that few meters further your husband stop the car and push your seat more back. When the accident happend my wife was on the way to pick up our doters. She turned back to come to you because of Vladimir's phone call .In the car she told you that she will cross from grandmother's house. The little girls was ready to come home and the house of the grandmother is on the way to the stables. No extra drive only to wait to get in the car. As i know the girls was already waiting on the door. Probably grandmother took an extra minute to get in the car as she had a knee replacement recently. When you left i felt very disappointed with all what happend. We like people enjoy when they come and visit us. That's why we didn't like to get paid as it way very clear you had not a good time even if it was not mistake of the guide or of the horse. Thank you for the visit and we wish all the best with your leg .

Our boys aged 14 and 12 had never ridden a horse before but after a few lessons were both able to join a two hour trek through the olive groves around the hotel. It was a highlight of their holiday, and the trainer Vladimir was excellent.
