About
The Museum is housed in one of a group of late 17th century buildings overlooking the beautiful Exe Estuary. Visitors can enjoy the furnished period rooms of the original Merchant’s House and the Sail Loft with displays giving a timeline of the town’s general history. Much of the Museum’s focus is on Topsham’s maritime history, with its role as a trade port and ship building centre. Exhibits also include unique historic river craft, local trades and organisations, wildlife of the Exe Estuary and memorabilia of the film star Vivien Leigh. There is a superb Tea Room and lovely Tea Garden for cream teas, coffee and cakes, and ice cream. And a fabulous gift shop with a variety of items including Topsham related gifts. Our 2023 exhibition features Dick 'Pincher' Pym, a fisherman who kept goal in the first Wembley Cup Final and was capped for England.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Another annual visit to this lovely museum. After a wander around and a browse in the gift shop, we had tea in the beautiful garden (under the Apple tree). A slice of carrot and a slice of fruit cake, with a lovely hot tea rounded off our visit.

We were in Devon for a family weekend and hankered after a cream tea. We had given up and were walking past the museum as it was closing but the staff very kindly let us in at the very last second and served up the perfect cream tea! Light scones, delicious jam and a perfect setting. No time, sadly, to see the museum but so nice to meet pleasant, helpful staff.

What an amazing little Museum! The volunteers who run tantrum were very helpful, very knowledgeable, and in my case, very patient! It has such a depth of information about Topsham's maritime history, I came away a lot wiser. There are several pro-active displays, and always a volunteer on hand to answer any questions. There is a very well-defined shop, and an amazing tea-room, and there is the most beautiful, tranquil garden to enjoy your tea and delicious cake!

There is a wealth of interesting exhibits in this lovely museum, well displayed with lots to read. The main area is the sail loft, where sails were actually made years ago, and all the interesting history of the Topsham heydays is really interesting. Attached to this is Merchants house, with rooms to explore, with history dating back 300 years. We are in our 70's, and thoroughly enjoyed it, but lots there for mums, dads and children too. All the volunteer staff were very friendly and helpful. We spent an hour there, but could have stayed longer. There is a tea room, and outside is a lovely garden with seating for refreshments when weather permits. A great afternoon! Thank you.

Quaint local museum about life in the area all around Topsham and Exmouth, well worth a visit, stayed for 2.5 hours although only a small place as there was so much information to absorb, my Father particularly enjoyed his visit.

You appear to have confused the Museum with the Quay antiques centre.

Home made cream tea in the dappled shade of the pretty garden adjacent to the museum represents the pinnacle of British tranquility and delight. The museum is interesting too and vividly raises memories of an international icon, Vivien Leigh; amongst many other local histories.

Actually visited this museum to get away from the very hot sunshine ( visited during the heatwave) It is very interesting and well worth a visit. Would have enjoyed an ice cream but the very slow service would have melted them so returned them to the freezer

Joined one of the Topsham Guided Tours run by Topsham Museum. Excellent tour guide, so knowledgeable and humorous. I’ve lived in Topsham for many years and still learnt a lot. Thank you, 90 minutes well spent.
