About
Kilchoman Distillery is a family run, independently owned single malt whisky distillery on Islay. It was the first to be opened on the island in over 124 years and is currently the only distillery producing whisky entirely on the island from barley that is grown on Rockside Farm, malted, distilled, matured and bottled on site. It is the smallest distillery and offers regular tours throughout the day. A cafe serving light lunches, homemade cakes and fresh tea and coffee is also open during the hours of 10am - 4.45pm. Advanced bookings for tours are encouraged to avoid disappointment.

- mcscary1Paisley, United Kingdom93 contributionsA different slant on a whisky tourHaving done many a distillery tour they can easily be the same so it was really nice to have a different take on distillery tour. The staff were amazing from start to finish. The tour around the distillery was interesting and in each area a different dram was offered and gratefully received. The banter was great not only from the guide but from all the staff we bumped into along the way from the handyman to the shop assistant. A special dram was presented at the end to enjoy. Well worth a visit and look for the tours and tastings in the good weather as they also have them outside on the beautiful machir bay. I’ll certainly be backVisited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 17 November 2023
- Alan304Cranford, New Jersey2,264 contributionsAn exceptional visitInstead of being located along the water to facilitate transport of their whisky, Kilchoman is located on a farm in the hills of Islay. The five mile drive on a single lane road through pastures with sheep and cattle is reason enough to visit. The staff have a strong sense of pride in their 100% Islay orientation. There also is a small cafe with surprisingly good sandwiches.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 November 2023
- Klaas BAmsterdam, The Netherlands42 contributionsKilchomanA bit over an hour bike ride from Bowmore to Kilchoman distillery. The ride is beautiful. The only distillery not on the coast but in the middle of knowhere. But what a beautiful bike ride. The very friendly staff is giving very good Tours. This distillery is established since 2005 and brand new compare to the others. Very promising distillery. At present the smallest on Islay, in the future they will grow.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 March 2024
- Cooper O63 contributionsDon’t skip Kilchoman!Stopped by during the last week of March. We couldn’t fit the tour into our schedule, unfortunately, but enjoyed a tasty lunch and even tastier drams at the tasting bar. They offer free pours of a few of their core range products, and everything else was very low priced (easily encouraging you to buy a full bottle afterwards!). I ended up walking out with a distillery exclusive single cask bottle. Their visitor center is a great space and the staff were very friendly. I would certainly recommend stopping by!Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 April 2024
- FredCamel64Greater London, United Kingdom13 contributionsWorth the trek - don't leave Islay without checking this outThree male adults did the tour. Wife (driver) and daughter did walks around the lovely Machir Bay while we were busy. Discovered them during lockdown when we did a home/virtual tasting on FB. Currently the newest distillery on Islay (although Ardnahoe & Port Ellen in production and 2 others planned). I like their concept of producing 100% on Islay, although it's only a small part of their range. Kirsteen did a great tour, and tasting selections were really good and generous. I will buy some of these. Certainly the biggest, and possibly the best, gift shop I saw on the island. Cafe is also really good - a great Cullen Skink! Book ahead for the cafe if you can, not many other options in this part of the island. A detour to Machir Bay is also wonderful to see.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 April 2024
- George P130 contributionsGreat whisky set up and conceptGreat to see a comprehensive distillery set up. The concept of farm to bottle is a great one. The smaller scale production to some of the other bigger places on the island is a fantastic concept. Being able to taste the 100% islay whisky while standing in the malting floor was a very nice touch. Lunch in the cafe was also really good. Fresh wholesome food. Cannot go past it.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 23 May 2024
- MarkQSSheffield, United Kingdom103 contributionsGreat Hospitality and Great WhiskyWe were cycling around this part of Islay and came across this distillery. The staff were amazing and we had a great coffee and cake. Tasted a few of the whiskies and settled on a sherry cask version. Stunning whiskey one of the best I have ever tasted. Great story here about all the barley coming from the adjacent fields.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 July 2024
- dougie1Glasgow, United Kingdom541 contributionsNice lunchHad a nice lunch on a wet, miserable afternoon. They had a good little menu with an adequate choice of things for lunch. The food came pretty quickly after ordering, and it was hot and fresh. The staff were very very busy, and it was a bit tricky getting the bill only to be told to pay on the way out the door.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 August 2024
- Kiana ELondon, United Kingdom11 contributionsOne of Islay hidden gem distillerysWe when to the Kilchoman distillery on a bit of a whim. We had been for a walk and wanted somewhere for lunch. We were also on a bit of a whisky tour, however this distillery didn't feature on our list to visit. How wrong we were and pleased we visited. As one of the newer distillery kilchoman was completely different. It really felt and looked is like a farm shop. The main area was open and bright, the cafe tucked away to the left. The food was wonderful, we all had soup and a sandwich perfect after a cold summer walk. The drive to the main distillery was flanked by barley fields with signs to tell you the field name and what barley was being grown. Definitely a hidden gem.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 24 August 2024
- Tina M7 contributionsWonderful experienceWe did the Limited Edition Tour and Tasting with Sharon and had a wonderful experience. Even in the driving rain the visitor centre felt comfortable, and Sharon was knowledge and friendly making for an excellent two hours, in addition to being able to stay and drink the whiskies at our leisure afterwards to be able to savour them. We decided we would do an upgraded tour at only one distillery on Islay and it was definitely worth choosing Kilchoman for that. We also ate lunch in the cafe and the food was delicious, would recommend getting lunch before or after a tour here.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 9 September 2024

We liked that distillery at first a lot : it is a fresh and modern building with a nice and different shop in a beautiful setting with barley growing all around. The young tour guide was really good and knowledgeable. But: unfortunately the manager who you probably don’t get to see normally is the only unfriendly and unsympathetic Scottish person we have ever met. People behind a business are always really important to us… Also the organisation, the manager itself as well as his employee at the welcome desk are absolutely unprofessional. At present, they do tours of 12 people because of covid in order to protect their staff in the still house – they say at least. There was only one place for the long tour left, and when we phoned for an additional place (just after the online booking 24 hours before the tour) as there were two of us, they said the maximum would be 12 and they couldn’t have more people for the tasting (space in the tasting room). But the rest of the tour should be possible. We both turned up, but then the situation was different : a maximum of 12 people also for the tour, for safety reasons. But they said it was already overbooked by 1 person (very inconsistent already). So 13, and this would be the absolut maximum. So just one uf us could take part in the tour – as booked - and when the tour startet the guide counted by request to make sure everyone turned up and it was 14 people, even though the manager insisted there were only 13, which was ridiculous as we were standing within the group. And they couldn’t be bothered that the tour now exeeded the maximum size by 2 people. But one of us still couldn’t take part. Lots of other distilleries around which we would definitely recommend considering before Kilchoman.

Booked this in last minute on a whim for husband's 60th birthday tasting tour. Laphroaig was slow to get back to us (you snooze you lose, Laphroaig, but more on that later!) and I liked the idea of an independent end to end producer. Kilchoman did not disappoint and for many reasons not just the whisky! It is an amazing spot on the far west side of Islay. Take time for a walk on Machir Bay either side of your tour. We arrive on a blustery day, the wind whisked my husband's cap off, which the feisty sheepdog in the yard picked up and ran off with!! You really do feel this is a different slice of the whisky industry and you really are smack in the middle of a farm. The place was a bit higgledy piggledy as they were in the middle of moving facilities around, but the staff were welcoming and informative. If you tour the distilleries on Islay you do end up with a fair collection of dram glasses. Kilchoman go one step further by interbreeding the lanyard with a dram glass - to make a dramyard. Presumably they had one too many tiddly tourist dropping their dram glasses into the mash tuns, who knows? The competent tour was rounded off by the obligatory tasting. If like me you are not a whisky afficianado, but simply along to drive, do have a wee sip of the Bramble liquer - yummy! PS we did get the hat back after a fair chase around the yard - we hadn't planned on dog slobber as a take home souvenir, but it made for a good holiday story

Kilchoman was our first distillery of the week and I really can’t think of anything negative to say. The tour was great and even though I’ve been on a number of distillery tours it was very informative and great to see how they are trying to do as much as possible on site and locally sourced. Sharon and Kirsty have a great tour and tasting and also did a great job of emptying my wallet based on the tastings we had. The cafe and shop are also great as well as being dog friendly which makes a huge difference as a dog owner. We visited 3 times in the week as well as visiting the nearby Machir Bay which is just stunning! Looking forward to the online tasting and festival in June and will def be back!

I had a wonderful tour of this unique distillery guided by Isobel, who was pleasant and informative. She is a local Islay girl with a lovely western isles accent and she was happy to answer any questions that the other guests and I had. During and at the end of the tour we were able to enjoy samples from the full range of the whiskies produced by the distillery and afterwards I enjoyed a light lunch in the cafe / restaurant.
It was an enjoyable experience experience which I would strongly recommend.

The emphasis here is sheer quality, with no compromise. Fantastic, family run enterprise growing at a pace. You will be hard pushed to find a stricter adherence to a process dictated by traditional purist methods, and it sure shows in the final product. Have a tour, you won’t regret it, we were lucky enough to be guided around by the owner’s niece, Emma. Emma is as honest and sincere as any saint, it’s not difficult when the whole Kilchoman ethos is precisely that, the old adage ‘build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door’ actually applies right here. If you are that sensitive you could even detect the sweat in the final drop of the distillate from the person who shovelled the malted barley from the floor to the kiln, it’s that close to reality. And it’s KIL ‘ HOMAN, no need to pop a hard ‘K’ in the middle. When it was my favourite whisky upon my first taste of Machir Bay, I was convinced, now upon visiting its origin, I am a disciple. It’s as authentic as you can possibly realise. What emerges from this distillery in the coming years will be impossible to emulate, impossible to replicate and difficult to beat. Next step, bring in the salt, a dunnage near Machir Bay would be a dream come true.

We'd booked for 3 distillery tours on Islay, this was the most interesting as they do all of the whisky making steps onsite including malting their own barley. So you get to see the whole process. Being a modern distillery they have much more space than the larger, older distilleries most of which have yet to restart tours. If you're on Islay and are there for distillery tours then add this one to your list.

We visited the Kilchoman Distillery on our short trip to Islay and had a great time. We booked for a tour of the distillery which was brilliant. We loved that you were able to see every stage of the whisky production with it being one of the few barley to bottle distilleries. Emma took our tour and she was fab! We then got to try two of Kilchoman’s whiskys (drivers bottles available to takeaway) followed by lunch at the distillery cafe. Great spot for lunch too. Thank you again!☺️

We had a lovely afternoon at Kilchoman, we took part in the basic tour which was led by Emma; who was very friendly and welcoming and had a lot of knowledge. The tour itself was great - we were restricted as to where we go due to covid restrictions but it didn’t take anything from the tour. It’s was great to be able to watch the malting process in action!
Following the tour, we used the cafe’s takeaway option to take soup and sandwiches away to the beach and have our lunch looking out onto the sea. Both soups and sandwiches where very tasty!

We visited Kilchoman as a family of 5 to do the distillery tour. The tour covered as much of the process as possible under COVID-19 restrictions. Amy, our guide, was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and able to answer the many questions asked of her. 10/10 Amy!
One small niggle was the short shouty woman giving Amy a row for presumably allowing water to get onto the malting floor. It was unprofessional to berate your colleague in front of customers , doubly so as we, the paying punters, were delayed outside in the pouring rain while you had your little paddy.
