finds from Skarkos and more
Jun 2019
Especially in connection with a visit to the excavations at Skarkos it makes sense to also go to the Archaeological Museum of Ios, housed in an early 20th century neo-classical building, the 'Amiradakio', thus named after its donator (of whom is a bronze bust in front), which originally served as the Town Hall.

The exhibits can be seen in four rooms on the ground floor. The opening hours are daily, except Tuesday, from 8am to 4pm. Outside the entrance is a stele with old, non valid opening hours (and closing day: Monday). Entrance fee is 2€, thus half the price of the entrance to Skarkos.

Most artefacts in the museum are either from Skarkos and thus from the Early Bronze Age (3rd millenium BC) or from the classical and hellenistic times, when the islands main settlement, already then called 'Ios', was at today's Chora and thus built over in the meantime.

There is not very much to be seen, the finds are rather few and not overwhelming in itself, but they help in understanding the history of Ios, especially also thanks to some interesting information boards in Greek and English.

In a restored neoclassical style house on the main road (by the main bus stop) this small museum displays in an accessible and well=resented fashion fashion the archaeological finds of the island as well as its history.

A long story ...

Built in a picturesque neoclassical building at the centre of Chota - the town- the Ios museum offers a glance at the civilisation that blossomed 3000 years ago and kept going strong, giving birth to the great poet Homer.
Ios has been a stronghold of pirates 1000 years ago since it is one of the biggest natural ports of the Aegean sea.

Nicely done and very interesting.

Have been to the museum a few times and each time I notice something informative- the history of the island and Skarkos and of the Cyclades generally is most interesting. The small museum is well set up and not expensive to enter. After visiting the museum you can appreciate the island and the culture more deeply - and visiting the ancient site Skarkos is fabulous. Great heritage!

Worth a visit

Pretty amazing that this place has survived until now - worth a visit if you hire a bike or car in Ios. Make sure you check opening times before you go.

History amidst the party!
Jul 2015 • Couples
I had always wanted to visit the museum at the town hall of ios and this year finally made it there. Although it was very small it was still very informative. It was extremely interesting to learn about the past of the island and this was a fun way to spend 20 minutes before jumping on the bus to the beach.

A nice cultural sip!

Being a little small, but very informative, it's an easy-to-visit museum with a cheap fee for entrance (2 euros). You really catch a glimpse of the island's history, with objects covering over 4 millenia!!
