Chapala is a beautiful pueblo to visit about an hour away from Guadalajara. There is a very traditional Mexican feeling when you visit. Personally, I preferred to eat lunch in one of the puestos instead of a restaurant. I feel that it is so much more delicious than those Americanized restaurants. It's was a great family outing to Chapala.

If limited on time, the walkboard is a pretty nice place to enjoy the view and the atmosphere. A body of water is always welcoming and a great place to relax. It features several restaurants and small shops selling snacks and desserts. A pretty popular snack is a plate of "charales" (small lake fish) with some lime and a bit... More

I expected something very different. Lake Chapala and there are no two ways about it is dirty. Even the surroundings are not clean with lots of algae and basura (dirt and trash) around the edges. A little government money to fix it up would do wonder.s

The drive was not bad. The lake is huge and it is a really cute town. We had lunch and walked around while we waited for our late evening flight.

Visited Caji last year with a group of friends, the vibe here is great. Came here right before sunset, ate some mariscos, had a couple of beers & started the night. Their are bandas(live music) playing down the malecon , you can drink, dance , pull the banda & just have a good time. The church de los 3 reyes... More

The largest lake in Mexico has it's issues with agricultural run-off that has left it undesirable to swim in, and huge swaths of invasive water plants. The good news is that the issues are being addressed, and there are some great lake activities. There is a Kayak club, if you are looking to get out on the lake and explore... More

separate a whole day in your schedule as you have to arrive early and depart late to experience the whole lake and what it offers in the shore. Great for foodies, adventurous and cultural travelers...

It's big - 50 miles long and 12 mile wide, but it is really shallow, with the deepest part being only 30 feet. According to the locals there are no water sports (other than tourist boat trips) and no fishing. And up close it is green and brown, especially in Chapala. The lake attracted me enough to consider retiring and... More

This is now officially one of my favorite places in Mexico. Only one hour by car from Guadalajara, to Lake Chapala is serene, beautiful place.
