I expected something very different. Lake Chapala and there are no two ways about it is dirty. Even the surroundings are not clean with lots of algae and basura (dirt and trash) around the edges. A little government money to fix it up would do wonder.s

The drive was not bad. The lake is huge and it is a really cute town. We had lunch and walked around while we waited for our late evening flight.

Visited Caji last year with a group of friends, the vibe here is great. Came here right before sunset, ate some mariscos, had a couple of beers & started the night. Their are bandas(live music) playing down the malecon , you can drink, dance , pull the banda & just have a good time. The church de los 3 reyes... More

The largest lake in Mexico has it's issues with agricultural run-off that has left it undesirable to swim in, and huge swaths of invasive water plants. The good news is that the issues are being addressed, and there are some great lake activities. There is a Kayak club, if you are looking to get out on the lake and explore... More

It's big - 50 miles long and 12 mile wide, but it is really shallow, with the deepest part being only 30 feet. According to the locals there are no water sports (other than tourist boat trips) and no fishing. And up close it is green and brown, especially in Chapala. The lake attracted me enough to consider retiring and... More

This is now officially one of my favorite places in Mexico. Only one hour by car from Guadalajara, to Lake Chapala is serene, beautiful place. The water halcianth is beautiful, despite it being non native and likely invasive. Here in ChDespite it being non native and likely invasive. Like most places - good and bad. Cost of living - good. Weather - great. When we were there the lake was in pretty bad condition: very little water and some kind of water plant choking out fish. I understand Lake is beautiful now and lots of water. Mexican people are mostly extremely poor - but for the most part... More

I went with my young family during the sunset. The place is good for a walk aside the lake drinking a fresh beverage. Also for eating is good; I recommend this place.

My wife and I were passing through Guadalajara and decided to take a detour 45 minutes south to visit the town of Chapala. I can see why so many expat would be attracted to the area. The lake is beautiful and the malacon is very clean and perfect for a stroll while taking in the sites. I would be back... More
