It’s a steep incline hike and decline in some parts but what a view! It’s actually one of the nicest spots I’ve visited in Colombia so far!
Easy to get to from salento from the the town square. It cost via keep approx 4400 pesos each way with jeeps going hourly.
Once you get there it costs approx 2200 to enter the main hiking spot, which is about 1 Canadian dollar.
The hike itself is about 12km and will take upwards of 6 plus hrs but has lots of room to turn around when you feel you have hiked enough.
The hike is not bad and has magnificent views for pictures and small spots along the way to grab a coffee, water or a cold beer!
Highly recommend taking this on!

The cloud rolls in quick here and unless you are on a jeep at Salento main square before 8:30am you are likely to get cloudy views.
We got to the main square just after 8am and it took about 10 minutes to fill up the jeep. By the time we got to Cocora Valley the cloud was starting to come in from a distance and our guide told us that is normal.
We started the hike straight away and got the beautiful blue sky photo of the Wax Palms but 15 minutes later the cloud had rolled in.
We did the full round trip hike which took just under 3 hours.

travelled with my parents who are in their 70s. at first they didn't want to ride horses but I explained that the hiking is very brutal (it was sprinkling). So they agreed and we rented 4 horses. We went to one of the hills where the wing statue is. It is a pretty steep hill and that was good enough for us. We also crossed the river on horses for pictures. We rented the horses from the barn attached to the parking lot. We paid 120K per person for 2 hours. The helper was very nice and accommodating to my parents. My parents loved him. He spoke some English. We enjoyed the scenery and it was an amazing experience.

A wonderful place, we took the short hike (aprox 30 min to the miradores and less then that for the way back). There is also a longer one that takes about 4 1/2- 6h that can start in rhe same place as the shorter one or you can do it counter clockwise. We took the willys (colorful jeeps from Salento that leave for Cocora Valley every few minutes , basically when they are full) and the ride is about 20 minutes or so to the parking at the starting trail. Be sure to leave BEFORE 8:30 or 9 a.m. because after this hour it gets extremely crowded and the trip might take double the time and the whole place is full of people.

We went counter clockwise and thoroughly enjoyed our hike. We did this because Salento tends to get cloudy/rainy in the afternoon and we wanted to see the palms in good weather. I think doing the hike this way is much easier too, considering the up hill sections we had to go down.
Sadly the hummingbird reserve was very disappointing. Too many people making too much noise, getting too close to the birds and scaring them away. There were maybe 4 birds at one time. We went to one in Ecuador and saw hundreds because the visitors are kept back from the birds. Not worth the extra effort at all!

The most beautiful natural area I have been in a long time. Went there 20 years ago, and it's like the time has stopped. It's so pretty! There's a quite expensive (by Colombian standards) charge to go into the hiking area, but sadly, no receipt and the path had conditions in pretty bad shape: lots of mud and slippery slopes, though: I am aware that rain in the are has been insane for the last couple of weeks: just would like to know that the money paid to hike is indeed used in conservation of this gorgeous area, and doesn't end up in someone's pocket (no receipt once paid) Would definitely go back every time I visit Salento, it's simply breathtaking.

We took the shorter hike with a very knowledgeable local guide called Blaney. He was extreme patient with the slower members of the group and took time to explain about the different plants and trees. The views here are stunning and the shorter hike was fairly easy. Very enjoyable!

A must visit for anyone coming down to the coffee region. We had our own guide (Penelope Birding - Nicolas) which was fantastic as learnt so much as well as admiring this stunning valley. We only did the loop up to both Mirador viewpoints so a shorter hike than the full loop. Enough for us as then allowed visits to Salento & Filandia.

My preconceptions were not very good and was expecting a mediocre visiting experience. I was very wrong we visited on a pre booked excursion with a tour company.
We had a gentle hike up to the cloud forest passing through farmland and last but not least viewing the world’s tallest palm trees.
It’s definitely a must do in my opinion. To see palm trees growing 2500 meters above sea level is quite a sight to behold.
A very majestic and magical location the mist and cloud just adds to the mystique of the location. It is a busy place but don’t let this put you off definitely a must do when in Columbia.
Just where appropriate clothing and footwear as it can be very muddy and wet under foot, which I learned through the experience of falling down the mountain on the decent wearing what was a white T shirt, the trainers I was wearing didn’t give any grip, walking boots or trail trainers would be a must.

A must see place, espectacular views. The place is amazing but you need to go there with the right tour guide. It’s high so you need to go slow but steady and you will catch your breath very soon. You also can go up there buy horse.

Gracias y saludos.

Hi Guys,
Does anyone know if you need riding experience to take the horseback tour?
Do you need to book in advance?
Many thanks.

How many days should someone plan for Valle del Cocora and Salento? 1 or 2 days?
Written 3 March 2019
Definitely two days. One of the most origin and beautiful part of Colombia. First day: Discover Valle de Cocora on the back of a horse. Second day: Take a long walk through Salento and enjoy the viewpoints, bars and restaurants

Buongiorno,
Saluti

Hi, I am planning to visit Salento but as we are tight in the schedule I wanted to ask you if it is possible to see: Valle de Cocora and one coffee farm in one day. And if so, it is possible/better to book a private transfer in order to make it. Thanks

Are there any Jeep tours or short walks that allow us to see the wax trees? I have a bad hip and the reviews of horse rides make it sound very challenging on horseback. Thanks!
Written 24 October 2018
Jeeps drop you at the bottom of the valley. You can then walk or take a horse but use the left road for the shorter way to the palm trees. Its around 5km to the viewpoints. Don’t go through the blue fence as it is a 16km/5hr hike.

Hello, we are going to salento next week. Our plan is to do a coffe tour and hike valle de cocora. Weather forecast is rain. How much rain should I expect? Will I be able to hike el valle if it’s raining?

Hey thanks for the question. I was in salento for 6 day and there were days it was rain off and on, and there were days it would rain for a good half a day. Either way your trekking through mud. Some of my friends and I were just covered in mud, but it was still 100% worth it. Bring a good pair of hiking boots for traction but be mindful they will be covered in mud. I hope this helps.

Hola Paola, es obligatorio contratar a un guía o puedo caminar sola?

Puedes hacer el recorrido por tu cuenta, ve con zapatos cómodos y que resistan un poco de barro.
