As we were visiting the area of lake Balaton , one of the landmarks that we've put on our list of place to see was the Castle at Sumeg.
Built in the second part of the 13th century , buy the order of the King Bela the 4th it represented a power to recon with through the ages history even through the revolutionary wat waged by Rakoczi Ferenc II in the 1700's.
The Hapsburgs burn down the stronghold in 1713 - after that it was never to play a significant role in the wars to come in next centuries.
Nowadays is a fortress that was the re-built and refurbished and has one of the most interesting event calendar from the area.
Entrance fee is 2500 Ft/adult and you can pay by card.
As you walk through the rooms of the castle , you will find signs telling you interesting facts about the history of the castle.
In the courtyard there are different events going on daily basis - especially between spring and autumn. (During our visit there was a falconry show ongoing)
The climb to entrance is not extremely difficult - however there a steeper portions you will need to mitigate.
Overall a very nice experience and can be very interesting , especially for families with kids ... so when you are in the area include this place on your list of "to do/to visit" it is definitely worth it.

I only attended the knight show so this is the only thing I can review. I was with my 2 daughters, 4.5 and 7, and despite the show being only in the Hungarian language, we all enjoyed very much. The riding tricks were really nice, but the shooting, flail and sword fighting, archery and juosting were absolutly excellent! It is not expensive (we paid HUF 3,500 for the tickets), and provides a really high value for your money, as the actors are really highly trained experts. Shortly - do not miss!

After the show there is big knight-hall style meal that all of the spectators may attend for extra payment (I understand that you can book a ticket that includes this as well as the show but we did not). We did not stay but it really seemed nice and cheerful. I would give it a try next time I'm around.

We were pleasantly surprised by this castle. Interesting walk around and great views. More signs in english would have been nice though :-)

It is a steep walk up to the castle - no option for wheelchairs users that I am aware. Once you get there, there is quite a lot going on so best to check their calendar. Pony rides, falconry display, petting zoo and more for the kids. Scramble round the castle for great views of the surrounding countryside. Sadly most of the information is only in Hungarian. We tried the photo/translation from Google but it was not that good so we were left wondering - a shame.

You have about 1 hour with the car from northern part of Balaton lake to small city of Sumeg. Castle in on the top hill and you have beutyful panorama on large area. From the parking you need about 15 minutes walk to the top. Entrance is not high - cca.6 €, but you need hungarian forint or card for payment. Urgent informations are available on information boards also in English.

Visited Sumeg castle while being in Sarvar in the thermal bath. There is a free parking under the hill. We had 4 months baby and it was really hard to get the pushchair up the hill - very slippery and rocky path. Were satisfied with activities held there - lots of attractions to entertain the kids during summer. Appreciated the changing table for babies in the toilet.

The castle is nicely restored ( Disneyland style) by the private Hungarian investor, the only thing missing are the alligators in the moat...lol...the horse show is very entertaining and the subsequent medieval dinner with the gypsy music is just out of the ordinary. It takes a lot to satisfy me, but this time I have no complains at all.

The castle is accessible from the main road to Balaton, so don't drive into the village. It is nicely renovated with exhibits from the daily life of the original inhabitants. The view over the surrounding landscape from the top is astonishing. Most of the explanations and signs are also translated to English and German, so you don't really need a tour guide. You can rest your legs at the small café in the castle court.

We visited the castle as apart of the family program. All over we were very satisfied with the experience,, the view was breathtaking, we had very good time there. However I would like to point out that the tourguide was very disappointing and unproffesional. he charged us 3000HUF for seven person and it was not worth it at all. He had a very limited knowledge of the castle. Although the castle and the rooms have good information table in three languages. Please avoid the tour guide in the castle it is a waste of money.

A rather big castle with several rooms and rich exhibition. Archery and falconry show in the courtyard, funny games (e.g.. pillow fight) for kids, backyard animals. And the scenic view around in unbeatable.
