Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Is situated in Tsikhisdziri, 7 km far from Kobuleti. The fortress used to be historical town of Egrisi Kingdom. It was considered as undefeatable fortress. Its acropolis was situated on a cliff hill along the shore. Its landside was protected with strong fence as rocky relief (the relief originated its Greek name "Petra" – rock, stone).

Nice place to visit and spend 30-40 minutes climbing ancient walls and finish bathing on a half-wild beach at the bottom of the fortress.
The ruins of the ancient historical city-fortress Petra is located in the village of Tsikhisdziri, Kobuleti region. It dates back to VI c.AD. Historically this territory was the settlement place of one of the Kartvelian tribes – Lazes. The Byzantine Emperor Justinian built a city here because of the unique military-strategic and trade-economical location. The city was crossed by the essential road connecting Western Georgia, Byzantine provinces, Iran and Armenia. Navigation was also very well-developed. Petra fortress became so inaccessible by the Middle Ages that it was even called “Kajeti Fortress” (the fortress of the kajis). Petra is impressive and thought-provoking. Our ancestors watch us from these proud walls, the ancestors who constantly fought against the enemies and preserved motherland and dignity to the posterity.

We arrived just after a wedding ceremony was over on the territory of the fortress and the decorations were still there. Most of all I was impressed with the view from the fortress, wild beauty of the nature and the ruins that make history to run across your mind- from Byzantium times to Peter the first the Russian Tsar and nowadays new-weds and happy tourists.

I was drawn in by some amazing drone photos online but you're never going to capture such photos with your camera when you visit. Nice view of the sea but the remains aren't that captivating. As of June 2024, the cost for a non-Georgian adult ticket was 8lari, which was about $3. I wouldn't go out of my way to stop here, but if you're in the area, sure.

The ruins are quite well-preserved, there are a few information plaques. The view from the top is breathtaking.
I visited it alone, in the early morning and it was really peaceful and beautiful.
Note: Petra fortress is actually located in Tsikhisdziri, a small village near Kobuleti. From Kobuleti you can reach it in about 15 minutes (?) by car.

Not a great deal to see here and not really worth the stop over. This area was closed off when we visited. Lots of rubble.

Very nice scenic view of sea and train tracks and old fortress of many tiers that goes back to the time of the ancient Persians. If you walk in the tall grass of the Ivy covered circular rings on each level, beware of chiggers!

I visited Petra in August, 2015. It's quite easy to find - just on the way from Kobuleti to Batumi (or vice versa). One of the most fortified Byzantian fortresses in Lazika (nowadays Ajaria). I think that for those who are interested in history it's a must-visit place.

We drove there from Batumi and nearly missed it as the entrance to it is in a bend of the road. On a cliff it commanded a strategic position but there is not much left of it

If you have been to a real fortress, this will be a disappointment. If you are looking for a place to drive to then why not visit?
