    Christ's mantle !?
This Cathedral is so steeped in history and legends that you really need a guide to take you through and explain it all. Jesus' robe, Nino, Sidonia, self-rising columns, graves of kings, copy of the Holy Sepulchre, . . . All this religious background still today attracts lots of pilgrims that show their devotion by prostrating themselves under the ciborium where Jesus Robe is supposedly buried. As usual, the cathedral sits in the middle of a large yard, surrounded by high crenelated walls and fortified towers, clearly for military defense. The current church itself is a magnificent structure, build on top of older places of worship, very early 11th century. Although ravaged by invasions of Arabs, Persians and the Great Timur, a lot of wonderful frescoes have survived later whitewashing by Russians, even earthquakes. It's UNESCO World Heritage listing is well deserved. You can easily spend a few hours here.

Quite an interesting site to visit. Loved the architecture. High ceilings and yellow stones does add something to add when it comes to old buildings. Beautiful place and seems it has a quite a bit of history too.

    Captivating Cathedral
Beautiful church…From here you can see the Jvari Monastery nestled on top of the mountain. A great place to spend your time looking at the architectural details of this church. Right outside you have a lot of shops selling Georgian made products. The cashmere shawls/scarves are a steal!

    History
Well, I don’t know if I can say something more than what other travelers have written before me however, I would like to take this chance to share my own experience about this trip to this important, magnificent religious spot. It was breathtaking. I was able to take many pictures about the place, which is easy to reach. I think it would be better to go there with the travel guide which I didn’t do and I had to find some information from Google about certain things in this cathedral. Yes I advise everybody to visit.

Beautiful Georgian cathedral with a gorgeous abside
Beautiful Georgian cathedral, with a stunning solid construction, wonderful icons and a gorgeous abside with the giant image of Christ. Was lucky enough to listen to the celestial voices of a choir. This cathedral is surrounded by a medium size courtyard. Several souvenir shops/stalls located on the way.

    Must visit
Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is an Orthodox Christian cathedral located in the town of Mtskheta. It was built in the 4th century AD and recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The exterior part was built in the 11th century. The cathedral is used for regular prayer on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, when it's closed for public. There is cobbled path with shops leading to the cathedral. Very nice place to visit near Tbilisi.

    Second Largest Church in Georgia
Built in the 11th Century over a Fourth Century church, medieval monarchs are buried here as well as Christ's robe. Could be true, could be legend, could be a true legend. Who are we to argue? Symbolic carvings on the exterior brick. Very photogenic. In front of the Cathedral is a Tourist Information Center that has free maps in English for several regions in Georgia. If you love a good map, don't miss this.

    A must visit place
Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, located in the historic town of Mtskheta, Georgia, is a stunning masterpiece of medieval architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This cathedral, also known as the "Cathedral of the Living Pillar," is deeply rooted in Georgian history and spirituality. The cathedral's exterior is adorned with intricate stone carvings that reflect the artistry of the 11th century. Inside, the atmosphere is serene and reverent, with high ceilings and beautiful frescoes that, despite some being lost over time, still convey a sense of sacredness and history. The cathedral is also known for housing the burial site of several Georgian kings and is believed to be the resting place of Christ's mantle. Visiting Setitskhoveli Cathedral is like stepping back in time. The sense of history is palpable, and the architectural beauty is awe-inspiring. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or someone seeking a spiritual experience, this cathedral offers a profound and enriching visit. The surrounding town of Mtskheta, with its charming streets and historical significance, adds to the overall experience, making it a must-visit destination in Georgia.

A UNESCO world heritage site. Mtskheta was the capital of Georgia at the time of its glory and this Cathedral is the majestic proof. Built in the early middle ages by the medieval Georgian architect Arsukisdze but the area itself dates back to the 4th century where it's believed to be the burial site of the holy mantle. It is also the burial place of many of the local Kings and queens like Vakhtang Gorgasali, Erekle the 2nd and the interesting tomb of queen Tamar the wife of king George the XI, with writing in old georgian and arabic.

Amazing heritage site with such a rich history, strategic location and wonderful vibe inside. There are many famous Georgian kings buried within plus religious relics, icons and murals. Around the cathedral's outer defense walls is the Old Town that is now mostly touristy but one can imagine that similar shops did exist centuries ago for pilgrims and other visitors so "tourism" has had a long history here.

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta was the main church of Georgia in the Middle Ages. The site on which the cathedral stands is holy to Georgia.
Svetitskhoveli means "pillar of life" in Georgian. At first, a local man allegedly brought a chiton (risa) of Jesus Christ from Jerusalem back in the 3rd century, gave it to his sister, who was buried with the chiton, and then cedar grew on her grave. King Mirian, who converted to Christianity under the influence of Saint Nino, decided in the 5th century to cut down the cedar and build a temple. However, only six of the seven cedar-bearing columns stood up properly, and one did not want to stand up, and only the prayer of Saint Nino resolved the situation.
The living pillar is also the main relic of the temple - it stands in the center, as if packed in a stone box, whose walls are frescoed in the 17th century. There is a very rare image of Christ surrounded by zodiac signs. A fourth-century stone baptismal baptism of Georgian kings was preserved. The cathedral was built on the initiative of Catholicos Melkhizedek in 1010–1029 by architect Arsukidze on the site of Georgia's first Christian church (wooden St. Sidonia), which in turn was replaced in the fifth century by a stone basilica under Tsar Vakhtang Gorgasali. Catholicos was specifically blessed to build in Constantinople. As for the architect, his arm was cut off as a result of some intrigue on the part of his teacher. This episode is immortalized by a bas-relief of the hand above the arch at the entrance to the cathedral. On the facade of the church there are many razrazrazts and bas-reliefs depicting grape clusters. Finally, there are many gravestones of significance to Georgia inside the church: Tbilisi founder Tsar Vakhtang Gorgasali (440–502), Catholicos cathedral builder Melchizedek (died 1033), and the last Georgian kings Irakli II (1720–1798) and his son George XII (1746–1800). Queen Tamara was also buried here, but her ashes were then transferred to the Gelati Monastery near Kutaisi. The church also has a chapel built in the 14th century, a replica of the Jerusalem chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. It symbolizes the fact that it is one of only two temples in the world where the clothes of Christ are kept.

Were on a tour in Georgia with a Georgian guide. Brought me and my friends to this place. Unable to log in. The monk at the entrance wouldn't let us in said service we left. The next day we came to this temple again. At the entrance we were again not welcomed kindly, a man was not allowed into the temple. Georgian asked the monk why he was allowed in and his friend was not, he was also Orthodox, shouted Georgian. Another monk came out of the church, began to calm the angry monk - the butler. We also tried to come in and we weren't allowed in, the monk shouted at the Russians and Belarusians not to belong here, I won't let you in! A crowd of people gathered, shouted Nazis, nationalist monks. It was not pleasant, it is nonsense. Eventually came out grandma, scandalized too. Then he closed the temple doors altogether. I don't recommend this place.
