- Nadina PNew York City, New York585 contributionsCountryside castle in striking distanceWe took an Uber to this caste; it's accessible by public transportation, but it was only 20 mins from our hotel via car, so it was totally worth it for us. It was far more off the beaten track than I expected; Muiden is the only place I went to in the Netherlands where they were surprised to encounter English speakers, though everyone spoke it. The castle grounds are gorgeous; we went at the very end of September, and the gardens were still blooming. The inside of the castle was cool as well, and the audioguide was great. Unlike many castles/mansions I've toured, the vast majority of the space is open to tourists. There were great views of the town nearby, Fort Pampus, and even Amsterdam in the distance. There were great art displays, and some of the weaponry was even interactive. While it seems like foreigners don't really know about this spot, it seems like Dutch tourists did; we were among the firsts to enter, and by the time we left there were some sizeable groups coming in. I'm very glad I made the trip for this!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 November 2023

There are a couple of tour routes through the castle and then you get some nice views of the castle and the surrounding area walking on the dikes around the castle.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 May 2024
- sebcioWiesbaden, Germany143 contributionsInteresting visit in a castle near AmsterdamOn a not so sunny day we decided to visit the castle. From the free parking P2 it is a 15-20 minutes walk through Muiden which is rather pittoresk. The castle looks impressive from the outside. In the courtyard you get an audio device that guides you along two tours. Each is just about right, not too long and not too short. Outside a nice garden.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 June 2024
- becnhughWickford, United Kingdom494 contributionsFascinating fairytale castleVisited with my husband and adult daughter on a holiday from the U.K. staff were all extremely helpful and approachable and spoke impeccable English (wish I could speak any foreign language that well!). We took both audio tours which were really interesting. There are information boards in each room but the free audio guides give you so much more information. My daughter in particular enjoyed the additional environmental exhibition which was running in each room of the castle. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and it really wasn’t very busy especially comparing it to a similar place would be in the U.K. however we are not complaining! We parked at P2 and walked to the castle which took about 15 minutes along the river and added to our enjoyment of the afternoon out.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 June 2024
- StephTravelsWest Sussex, United Kingdom831 contributionsExactly what you’d think when someone says ‘castle!’We had a brilliant visit. It took a little while for us to get there from Amsterdam central (a train to Weesp and then the 110 bus followed by a short walk). The town itself is really cute and there’s a lovely little coffee shop by the lock. The castle is fantastic…. Even complete with a real moat! The audio guide is a must as there isn’t much to read so if you want to learn anything, you need the guide (which is free). I’d also like to mention the man at the audio guide info point as he was really kind, friendly and helpful! There’s lots to see and learn… overall it should take you about a hour and a half to properly see everything! Would recommend!Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 September 2024

The journey there and the surrounding landscape was very lovely. The castle itself is quite nice as well, with interesting audio commentary and pretty views. Be sure to check out Weesp if you are taking a bus from there to Muiden. We also recommend Cafe Graaf Floris in Muiden, their food is very nice.

One of the oldest castle in Netherlands, situated at 15 KM distance from Netherlands 🇳🇱. The inside of the castle, its rooms and kitchens, was restored to look like they did in the 17th century and several of the rooms now house a collection of arms. You can find restaurants and nice places to have coffee, visiting the castle can be an excellent day bike trip. Entrance is 16.50 EUR or free if you have a museum card.

We visiting the castle on a Sunday in August and expected it to be busy but it was just right, not too busy, not too quiet.
We parked up our bikes outside after cycling from near Amsterdam (Flevopark) it took us around 45 mins with the kids on little bikes.
The castle has two audio guides, one for a tower tour and one for learning about how people lived inside the castle. A nice balance of facts and quirky anecdotes. Even our six year old enjoyed the audio guide.
There were extra art activities in the gardens, one which was painting and the other creating a castle with stamps which the kids loved.
Would recommend a nice bike ride and day out.

It was surprising to see the castle well preserved. In some of the halls, the royal dishes were kept in display. The castle was surrounded by moats, garden and a plum orchard. The views from the watch tower were simply magnificent! There was a souvenir shop and a small cafe to take home some memorabilia.

Great way to spend the day. The town is very beautiful and small. The sailing boat views and lots of yachts around. 13th century castle is preserved very well and the rooms are decorated so we can visualize the purpose of rooms and chambers.

The castle is located abou 15 kilometres sothwest from Amsterdam in the village Muiden. There are beautiful gardens around, ideal place to relax. The castle is wonderful place for children (families or school trips) to enjoy options of the castle. For example they can borrow costumes and make some photos. The village Muiden is good place to have a cup of coffee or lunch.

One of the coolest medieval castles we've visited (smaller than the one in Prague, but still very much worth a visit). The audio tour is excellent. Just focus your personal unit on the code on the sign in each room, and listen to the presentation. Very well done. Interesting information about the toilets in the castle, as well as the dungeon room. The furnishings and art work are incredibly interesting. A real gem.

Hello
How much time does it take to reach the muiderslot castle by ferry from amsterdam central ?
Is it mandatory to take the guided tour ? Or can we do it on our own ?
Thks in advance
Written 11 April 2019
You do not have to take the guided tour. Although it is a lot nicer and you will get a better understanding of how the people lived. I have never heard people taking the ferry. You can reach t Muiderslot by bus from Amsterdam and it is possible to bike also from the Central station area. Or rent a scooter.Pubic transportation : you can take the train to Weesp, then rent a bike or take the bus. you can google it.There is also a very nice fortress town called Naarden about 15 minutes by bike from Muiden. The town has a very interesting history . Enjoy your time!!!
