Interesting find!

A slice of history here, in what looks like an elaborate drinking well. It has been designed so that Horses can drink from the trough area. This tower is seriously ancient and was part of a viaduct that carried water from the centre of the island. Incredible. The tower has since been restored, and a great job has been done to it. Look out for the many cats hanging around. They have come to enjoy a lunch station for cats, just a few yards away.

Found the history of this really interesting

On my last visit to Malta about a year ago, I looked for the Wignacourt Water Tower but sadly never found it. Transpired I was looking in the wrong area! Anyway, around a year later I did manage to locate it.
It is a fairly short walk from Valletta bus terminus, near to Argotti Botanical Gardens, and also near to the Mall Gardens.
I was intrigued to learn about this 17th century aqueduct. I had seen parts of the aqueduct in other areas of Malta. I didn't know at that time what they were, and had always wondered, but now my questions have been answered!
Wignacourt Water Tower is a round structure supported by pilasters, and it also contains a fountain and a horse trough.
The tower was restored between June 2015 and June 2016. The interior consists of a spiral staircase which was also restored in 2016.
A great find!

centuries old water tower in Floriana, Malta
Jun 2018 • Solo
If you plug your ears and look at this Water Tower, probably the only on in Malta, you could be forgiven for believing that you've been transported by a time machine, centuries back at the reign of the Knights of Malta who built an engineering feat for transporting water from Rabat, in the centre of the main island of Malta to the at that time, the new capital city. This Water Tower's unique design has its own mystery...it was never intended as so many other towers to be an instrument of war. Even today, it satisfies the thirst of the horses pulling the tourist horse drawn carts as well as the close to three dozen cats which roam the neighbourhood!

Remains of the Wignacourt Aqueduct
Mar 2018 • Couples
When driving to Mdina we saw on the way the remains of what was a large aqueduct.
The 17th-century aqueduct in Malta, which was built by the Order of Saint John to carry water from springs in Dingli and Rabat to the newly-built capital city Valletta.
The aqueduct remained in use until the 20th century. Most of its arches still survive today, and can still be seen in the localities of Attard, and others on the way to Mdina and Rabat
Many fountains and towers were built on the way and still are visible today.
