It's a nice little side with just a few structure a couple of which are in the process of restoration. The main temple is a Rio Bec style edifice with well preserved ornaments. I think the admission is free. No climbing allowed.

Hormiguero is a small site with just a few excavated ruins. The first structure has a great monster mask and other decoration. There is also a temple with Chac masks on the corners. There are some good trails into the jungle. Hormigureo is 35 km,...More

It's necessary to go down a road that is very slow and probably very difficult in the rainy season (we were there in the dry season). The challenging bit of road is not too long, so it's not too bad. The ruin is definitely worth...More

Three excavated buildings but other jungle covered mounds everywhere. 2/3 buildings are quite cool. Admission is free, nobody else there. You need to drive about 2kms down a jungle shrouded 'trail', past the bajo and nature trail parking area to the dead end, the rest...More

Since this site is located approximately five hours from Campeche City, it should be listed as a Xpuhil attraction or an Escarcega attraction.

Hormiguero is a rather large (though not daunting) Rio Bec-style site which especially features the famous Monster Mouth entrances. These are fantastically decorated friezes depicting Itzamna, the terrible Mayan god, Monster of the Earth...A door represents its mouth, and the upper friezes represent its eyes...More

On October 2012 we contacted Nicolas of Ka'an Expeditions to take us to visit the ruins of Calakmul. On this occasion, march 2014, he took us to Hormiguero. I was expecting some stylized archeological ruins, some high towers and maybe a pyramid. We saw a...More

The Chenes style monster mouth doorway is what you visit this site to see. This is one of the most impressive buildings that you will see in the area. There is nothing like this at Calakmul. The site is a little off the beaten path,...More
