About
Pocklington’s unique Gardens have justifiably been called “a jewel in Yorkshire’s crown” and are home to a National Collection of over 100 varieties of Hardy Water Lilies which bloom on the Upper and Lower lakes between June and August. The lakes, which contain Carp and Roach that can be hand fed, are set in nine acres of woodland and gardens. There are walkways around both lakes, an ornamental bridge, a Victorian Garden, an Aviary, a newly re-planted Rock Garden, and a Stumpery, the latter being the most recent addition to the Gardens. Events include an annual Tulip Festival, Sunday brass band concerts, and children’s events held throughout the spring and summer. The Stewart Museum houses artefacts which belonged to Major Percy Stewart, an adventurer and traveller, who lived at Burnby Hall between 1901 and 1962, and who made eight world tours between 1906 and 1926. A cafe, gift shop and playground are situated on the site. All facilities are wheelchair and pushchair friendly.

Nice flat relaxing walks around the gardens
Lovely garden with a really nice cafe on site . The gift shop sells plants and other items and is also very nice . We are members so visit frequently . The only downside for us is you can’t take your dogs in the gardens . I think this is because of the lakes and the lilies but I could be wrong . You can buy fish food to feed the very large and very greedy fish
Thank you for your review and we're glad that you enjoy visiting us regularly.

    Beautiful gardens
The gardens are very beautiful. We were there just before the tulip festival and there were huge tubs with all varieties of tulips dotted about. It is great to feed the fish as they practically jump out the water to get the food! The cafe is good too and the small museum within was interesting. Unfortunately the area with the aviary was fenced off because of the avian flu. A lovely peaceful setting for the gardens, I would highly recommend a visit
Thank you for your lovely review and we're glad you enjoyed your visit. We hope you'll come again soon.

    A lovely day out
We are relatively local but haven't visited Burnby Hall since before Covid. It's just a lovely day out. Feeding the fish is a highlight (and I'm 55!!), as is seeing the various gardens and stumpery. We had a wander around, then popped into town for lunch (Black Bull, basic food but hot and relatively inexpensive). We then headed back (5 minute stroll) to listen to the ERY brass band, which played from 2-3pm, then 3.20-4pm. Obviously, as the sun was peeping through, we had to have an ice cream as well! A quintessentially English day out. FAB 👌
Thank you for your review. We're really pleased you enjoyed your visit - you're never too old to feed the fish!!!

    Exceeded expectations!
We had been recommended to visit here and we were not disappointed. The gardens are splendidly and perfectly maintained and as an RHS Partner Garden in the months we visited, it added value to our membership. We were particularly taken with the rock garden planting, which was the best we have seen. It was busy on a glorious day but absorbed the numbers. The fish in the lake are amazing when fed and although we didn’t use the cafe, the food we saw looked lovely and our picnic pailed by comparison! If we had a niggle, it would be parking. As disabled travellers there were only a few allocated spaces and all full, with as usual, some cars not displaying blue badges! We did however, have a lovely and easy level stroll around on the day, with lots of places to sit and take in the beautiful vistas. Well done Burnby Hall!
Thank you for your lovely review. We are glad that you enjoyed your visit and hope you'll come and see us again soon.

    Afternoon out
We spent about three hours in the gardens on a Saturday afternoon. The first surprise was the fish. They were huge and there are loads of them. You can buy fish food to give them, lots of people were doing that. The many parts of the garden are great and surround the central lake. We did a full lap of the garden, the went to the cafe for a break, followed by another lap of the garden. There is plenty of free parking next to the entrance.
    Many thanks for your review.

    A jewel
The continued work and development of this jewel of a garden is brilliant. The snowdrops were just going over but it is clear that their placement in the garden is well thought out. The work on the Backhouse Rockery is now paying off, so many lovely plants that allow a closer look at the flower form. The birch walk is very pretty with the underplanting of Cyclamen coum and other spring bulbs. I am looking forward to going back in the next 2 weeks and then for the tulip festival in April. The food is also a treat.

We had a lovely visit today. It’s quite wheelchair friendly, though I did struggle at one point. Many plants to see and lots of fish. Clean and well organised and labelled.

This is a super water based garden in the heart of Pocklington which offers free parking. Staff and volunteers are friendly and helpful and the gardens which contains a stunning collection of water lilies are superb. The cafe is a little pricey, but the quality is superb, including for those with gluten or dairy allergies.
