The house inside is a mixture of the way it was, the expression of an artist and a feeling of sadness. To me it portrayed the life of a lonely woman with an incredible talent. The sculptures are thought provoking and speak with an intelligent artistic flair. We are given the opportunity to appreciate the art and lose ourselves in... More

This house and sculpture collection of an eccentric personality is simply fabulous. The art itself is everywhere and a fascinating tribute to a clearly unhinged mind. Be sure to see the film that puts the life in context before visiting the house.

We found the Owl House fascinating, beautiful, and tragic. Important was seeing the excellent audio/visual before walking in the house; it gives the story of Helen Martins...essential. (We also convinced the staff to let us see the longer program normally shown at only 2/3 times a days, small added fee.) The sound could be crisper, but still excellent. The house... More

This I found to be a sad place. The house tells it's own stories without speaking a word. Worth a visit but be prepared.

We specifically planned to visit The Owl House when we overnight in Graaff-Reinet. It's been one of the things I wanted to do for a long time and it is a great experience! I couldn't believe that one woman known locally as Miss Helen and her helper Koos Malgas, was responsible for this fairyland of adventure!

The Owl House is a very strange yet very interesting attraction. I have been a couple of times and is always amazed on how many things I find in the Owl garden that I haven't noticed before. If you are in the area then this is a must visit.

On arrival a short film about Helen Martins is shown. Thereafter one strolls to her original house to admire her unique pieces of art. Lots of camels, owls and interesting glass work to be seen. Inside her house it feels being on a time journey years back. Fascination place. 45 minutes drive from Graaff-Reinet worth while.

My visit to Nieu Bethesda was mainly to see the Owl House,of witch I have heard so much. As I say in my title, it exceeded expectations. This is an amazing experience.unbelievable that Helen Martens and her assistant created this wonderland. She was way ahead of her time. Essential to view if you are travelling through the Karoo,

With lovely cool and wet conditions left our overnight spot in Graaff Reinet for Nieu Bethesda. Went to very helpful information center in village centre bought tickets for the Owl House & watched the introductory video. Walked through back of information centre to the Owl House. Truly fascinating to see how the original owner and local artists turn bottles and... More

It's a bit off the beaten track, especially if you take the 30 km dirt road "Owl Route" to get there, but with the trouble. The museum and video are well-done. Helen Martins turned her house & yard into unusual works of art.
