"I remember when I was a boy ...... !"
May 2021
Everything I expected of a small countryside village museum - and more. Has all the farming and historic exhibits appropriate to 19th-20th century life in a rural community, from old handtools / equipment and machinery to items off the Welsh dresser, curios and childrens' toys, and a little bit of WW2 memories, with the piece de resistance - a magnificent, almost immaculate, Brougham carriage in gorgeous deep Royal Blue (occasionally used for Weddings).

A visit here is a great time filler if you are going for a ride on the Tenterden Steam railway later in the day !

Popped in as was passing and was overwhelmed with the bygone exhibits and the voluntary staffs knowledge and helpfulness! Donations only required on exit but on this occasion I had absolutely no problem helping keeping this afloat!!!! Keep it up guys and girls ! It's a bit worrying that I remembered so of the exhibits !!!!

Thank you for reviewing your visit to the Woodchurch Village Life Museum. We're delighted you enjoyed the experience. As you've found, our volunteers -- who generously give up their valuable time at weekends and bank holidays to help with the running of the museum -- are extremely knowledgeable about the village and its history and are more than happy to share what they know with our visitors. We're intrigued to know what exhibits you remembered, but perhaps you'd prefer not to tell!

Not only an interesting experience for local people but visitors from outside of the area would also find the exhibits of great interest.

Thank you for your comments and review of the Woodchurch Village Life Museum. You're absolutely right that our exhibits will appeal not only to local people but to anyone whose family lived in a rural Kentish or Sussex village and who wants to experience how life in the country would have been for their ancestors.

Thank you so much for taking time to review the Woodchurch Village Life Museum. We're glad you found the displays interesting and a fascinating look back at village life. We are open again on Friday 19 April 2019 and then each Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday until the end of September. We're also looking forward to being part of the Wheels of Time scheme again this year and introducing younger visitors aged 5-11 to some of the best museums and heritage sites in Kent.

A local museum should tell local stories and this one does a superb job. Excellent finds and artefacts, interactive displays and oral histories from the villagers. A surprising variety of content. Volunteer staff take time to help you enjoy the visit. Really impressed. I arrived at closing time and they stayed open for me. Lovely people.

Excellent Village Museum

Unexpectedly good museum. Run by volunteers, it's really interesting and informative. We discovered it on google after a weekend in Smarden (also worth a visit). We were the only visitors and the curators were happy to stop and chat about the museum, interestingly, they have a room upstairs - with so much stuff that needs to be catalogued and ready for display - they are particularly interested in exhibits which have a tie to the village.. If you are in the area, it's really worth a visit - followed by a drink at the Six Bells, then a look around the church opposite and rounded off by a visit to the Windmill (recently refurbished) - which runs along the pathway between the 2 pubs!

Thank you for reviewing your recent visit to the Woodchurch Village Life Museum, Lesley. For anyone with an interest in the village or who had ancestors who lived here, the displays in the museum provide a fascinating link to the past that you can't get from census returns and parish records (although we have those too). Rolling together a visit to the museum with lunch at one of the two pubs followed by a trip to the windmill is the perfect way to spend a weekend in what is one of the most attractive villages in Kent.

Charming, informative and interactive taste of village life in days gone by.

If you happen to be in the Tenterden area on a Weekend, especially a Sunday, I highly recommend a visit to Woodchurch (10 minutes' drive out of Tenterden). The Museum of Village Life has been thoughtfully curated and there is plenty to interest both young and old (my 8 year old LOVED the old wooden rocking horse and was fascinated by audio recordings of first-hand accounts of bombs dropping during WWII). If you visit on a Sunday afternoon, you might be in luck and catch a cricket match on the expanse of village green. You could also wander up to Woodchurch Windmill (open Sundays and bank holidays 2-4pm) and see the internal workings of a traditional Kentish smock mill. It is worth strolling up the gentle slope to the windmill (access is through the kissing gate, between the 2 village pubs!) to take in the views, even when the windmill is closed.

Wartime memories and the part played by Woodchurch residents is very well displayed. We had a wonderful experience with a personal tour hosted by an erudite volunteer who opened the museum especially and catered very well for my husband's very poor sight..and for his guide dog ! The telephone number is on the gate.

Unabashed authenticity in this modest but very well curated museum. We discovered this gem by chance and it needs to go more decisively on the tourist map. A local collector had amassed an impressive collection of local, and some very ancient, farmhouse and local everyday items which became the foundation of this museum. The displays are fantastically well documented, each with a bit of history and some with a gem of an anecdote - the remoteness belies the professionalism of the displays. From luxury carriage, to milk float, to WW2 displays with original audio reportage of events, to household items such as an early TV and mangle, to architectural remnants - truly fascinating. The staffing is second to none, with ready to hand informed and engaging people devoted to the community and preservation of a fast dwindling rural life. We were even given access to their kitchen to make ourselves a cuppa and help ourselves to biscuits. Go thru village past church on your left and there is a small brown sign. Into the yard and amongst the fields and birdsong, that's where the time travel begins.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience of the Woodchurch Village Life Museum. We are, naturally, delighted you found the collection engaging and interesting. Our team of volunteers works hard to ensure that visitors enjoy their visit. Many come from the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in search of their Woodchurch ancestors and to feel for what life would have been like for them centuries ago. From comments here on TripAdvisor and in our more traditional visitors’ book at the museum, we appear to have got it right.
